RESEARCH
My research focuses on Canadian women writers (19 th century to 21st century writers), with
special interests in the politics and the poetics of silence, silence and reticence as narrative
strategies, representations of silenced voices, and of secrets and trauma. I have a special
interest in the postcolonial short story. Many of my published essays are devoted to the
Canadian short story writer Alice Munro, but I have also devoted several essays to 19th
century Canadian female writer, Pauline Johnson-- focusing on her attempts to write back
from a First Nation perspective-- and on the works of Catharine Parr Traill and Susana
Moodie, as travel/settle narratives written by women, focusing on their representation of the
environment and First Nations populations-- including their knowledges (botanics and
technology)-- and underlying the tensions at work in these colonial works.
I am currently working on diasporic short fiction by women writers from Asia, The
Carribean and Africa, working on the idea of « culinary dislocations »
