Sea Scout Armada 2007
At the 3rd European Sea Scout Leaders
Conference In 1992, Einar Øslebye and Gunnar
Skundberg of Norway, proposed a plan for a Sea
Scout Armada to sail to the World Jamboree in
the Netherlands in 1995. This event took place
and it was quite successful. An account can be
found in the report “Sea Scouting in Europe Odysseus Group, June 2000”
(http://europe.seascout.org/) - the article is
entitled “Sea Scouting in Europe – an
International Cruise.”
The Norwegians have proposed another Sea
Scout Armada to sail to the Centenary Jamboree
in England in 2007. Plans for this event are
currently progressing. Einar will be the
Commodore and the event will start with six
Norwegian ships sailing down Denmark’s east
coast to the Kiel Canal. It is hoped that other
Scout boats from the Baltics may be able to
participate as well.
The flotilla will next sail to the Netherlands and
traverse the Dutch and Belgian waterways before
crossing to southeast England. The organizers
hope that other Sea Scout boats will join them
along the way or rendezvous with them in the UK.

Armada des Scouts Marins 2007
A la troisième Seminaire Européen pour
Responsables Scouts Marins, 1992, Einar Øslebye
et Gunnar Skundberg de Norvège, ont proposé
un projet pour une Armada des Scouts Marins
naviguer au Jamboree Mondial dans le Pays Bas
en 1995. Cet événement était couronné de
succès. Il y a une explication dans le rapport " Sea
Scouting in Europe - Odysseus Group, June
2000" (http://europe.seascout.org/index-fr.html) l’article est s’intitulé” Sea Scouting in Europe - an
International Cruise"
Les Norvégiens ont proposé encore qu’une autre
Armada des Scouts Marins doit navigué au
Jamboree Centenaire en Angleterre en 2007. On
prepare en avance pour cet événement. Einar
sera le Commodore, et l’événement commencera
avec six bateaux norvégiens, qui navigueront la
côte de l’est de Danemark au Canal de Kiel. On
espére que quelques autres bateaux scouts des
pays Baltes prendront part aussi.
La flottille naviguera aux Pays Bas, et traversera
les voies navigables néerlandais et belges avant
de traverser la Manche à Angleterre sud-est. Les
organisateurs espèrent que des autres bateaux
Scouts les rejoindront en route, ou les rencontront
à un rendez-vous dans le Royaume-Uni.

The Sea Scouts in the Danish Scout and Guide
Association invite other Sea Scouts and -Guides to
participate in SØ007, a Sea Scout and Guide
Camp.
The camp will take place at Frederikssund, a town
approximately 40 km northwest of Copenhagen.
We shall be sailing in the sheltered waters of the
Roskilde Fjord, where many Viking ships were
found.
Camp activities will be connected to the sea. It is
therefore that the participants be interested in Sea
Scouting and Guiding. The camp will be divided
into different subcamps, splitting troops into its
patrols.
Dates:
25th July to 1st August 2007
Price:
1050 DKK per person, approximately 140 €
Participant profile:
We expect about 800 participants. We also expect
international participants who are above 12 years
of age, able to swim 200 m, and are able to
speak and understand Danish, English or a
Scandinavian language (for safety at sea reasons.)
Home hospitality:
Unfortunately, we are unable to offer home
hospitality before or after the camp because the
Danish Sea Scouts and Guides sail in their own
vessels to and from the camp.
Travel:
There are hourly trains from Copenhagen to
Frederikssund.

Les Scouts Marins de L’Association Scout et Guide
Danois invitent des autres Scouts Marins à
participer dans SØ007, un Camp des Scouts
Marins.
Le camp aura lieu à Frederikssund, une ville
environ 40 km nord-ouest de Copenhague. Nous
naviguerons dans le Fjord de Roskilde, sur des
eaux abrités, où on a trouvé beaucoup des
bateaux Viking.
Les activités du camp seront connectées à la mer,
donc c’est important que les participants
s’intéressent au Scoutisme Marin. Le camp sera
divisé en les subcamps différents, fractionnant des
troupes dans ses patrouilles, et chaque patrouille
habitera dans un des subcamps.

Nous espérons à peu près 800 participants. Les
participants de l’étranger doivent au-dessus de 12

Malheureusement, nous ne sommes pas capables
d’offrir l’hospitalité à la maison avant ou après le
camp parceque les Scouts Marins danois
naviguent dans leurs propres vaisseaux au et du
camp.

The 50th Anniversary Tall Ships Race

Being a “veteran” from the first Tall Ships’ Race in
1956, I was allowed to sail this year in Discovery
as a ‘1' year old again. I must admit that the
young crew members, including my grandson
Tom, had far more energy than I did.
After the delivery trip to St. Malo, I “retired” as
skipper and handed the vessel over to Steve
Rawlinson so I could lose 50 years in age and be
a trainee again. I was in charge of the daily radio
reports and also covered for the skipper and mate
during the day as needed. We left St. Malo at 3
AM and navigated between the rocks in the dark.
We had a very lumpy, fast sail to Torbay, arriving
at Brixham in less than 20 hours. We reached
Torquay by 9 AM and had interviews on TV there.
Tom and I were interviewed four times – a
grandfather and grandson sailing together in the
race was of some interest! We were also
introduced to HRH the Duke of Edinburgh.
The race start was
exciting: thick fog with
visibility of 50 meters or
less. We had to use
GPS to find the start
vessel and crossed the
start line 30 seconds
after the gun. We saw
two other vessels at that
time and then nothing
for the rest of the night.
The wind of course was
coming from the direction we wanted to go.
Eventually the wind fell off and we made our way
to Ushant and then into the Bay of Biscay making
good time with the wind behind us and our sails
wing on wing. About 50 to 60 dolphins joined us,
swimming around, some in perfect formation in
twos and fours, and later on 3 whales. It was an
unforgettable experience.
Cape Finnistere was shrouded in mist and we had
the wonderful sight of the great Russian
square-rigger Mir coming out of the mist towards
us. We spent several frustrating days with little or
no wind, sailing down the Spanish and Portuguese
coasts. Twice a day we reported our position and
listened with great interest to the positions of all
the other entrants. We eventually drifted across
the line after 9 long days and nights and came 8th
in class and 37th overall. We motored into Lisbon
where a most amazing reception and the sight of
those magnificent square-riggers awaited us.
The crews had a very good time in Lisbon –
Medals galore for everyone. I was presented with
a special veteran’s medal which is quite splendid
and will go with the one I received in 1956 . I
cannot sufficiently express the pleasure and pride
in being allowed to sail on Discovery, thereby
allowing me to achieve a lifetime’s ambition. Tom
says he is going to ensure his grandchildren sail in
the 100th Anniversary Race.

Parceque j’étais “vétéran” de la première Course
des Grands Voiliers en 1956, j’ai été permis de
naviguer en Discovery cette année comme
apprenti “du premier an” encore une foi. Je dois
reconnaître que les jeunes membres d’équipage, y
compris mon petit-fils,Tom, avaient loin plus
d’énergie que moi.
À St Malo, j’ai pris ma retraite comme capitaine,
et j’ai remis à Steve Rawlinson. Donc je pourrais
perdre 50 années d’âge et être stagiare de
nouveau. J’étais responsable des rapports
quotidiens de radio. Nous avons quitté St Malo à
0300 et avons navigué entre les rochers dans
l’obscurité. Nous avions un voyage très agité mais
rapide à Torbay, arrivant à Brixham dans moins
que 20 heures. Nous avons atteint Torquay par
9am et avions des interviews pour la télé. Tom et
moi, nous étions interviewés quatre fois - un
grand-père et le petit-fils naviguant ensemble

dans la course était de quelque intérêt ! Nous
avons été aussi introduits à SAR le Duc
d’Edimbourg.
Le début de la course était trés excitant, le
brouillard épais avec la visibilité moins de 50
mètres. Nous devions utiliser GPS pour trouver le
vaisseau de départ, et nous avons traversé la ligne
de début 30 seconds après le canon. Nous avons
vu deux autres vaisseaux à ce moment-là et alors
rien pour le reste de la nuit. Le vent, bien sûr,
venait de la direction que nous avons voulu aller!
Finalement le vent a libéré, et nous avons fait
notre route à Ushant et alors dans la Baie de
Biscay avec le vent derrière de nous. Environ 50 à
60 dauphins nous ont joints, nageant environ,
quelques-uns dans les formations parfaites dans
deux et quatre, et plus tard, 3 baleines : c’était
une expérience inoubliable.
Le Cap de Finnistere était enveloppé dans la
brume et nous avions la vue merveilleuse du
grand voilier carré russe - MIR - qui est sorti de la
brume vers nous. Nous avons dépensé des jours
irritants avec très peu de vent, naviguant le long
des côtes d’Espagne et de Portugal. Deux fois par
jour nous avons rapporté notre position et écouté
avec le grand intérêt aux positions de tous les
autres participants. Nous avons dérivé finalement
à travers la ligne après 9 jours et nuits longs,
huitième en classe et 37ème en général. Nous
sommes entrés au Port de Lisbon avec moteur, à
une réception stupéfiante, et une vue magnifique
des grand voiliers carrés. Les équipages ont eu un
très, très bon temps dans Lisbonne, et il y avait
des médailles pour tout le monde. J’ai reçu une
médaille spéciale du vétéran, qui est tout à fait
splendide et ira avec l’un j’ai reçu en 1956.
Je ne peux pas exprimer suffisamment le plaisir et
la fierté d’été permis de naviguer sur la
DISCOVERY, qui m’a permis d’atteindre une
ambition de la vie. Mon petit-fils, Tom, a dit qu’il
va assurer que ses petits-enfants seront dans la
Course d’Anniversaire 100 des Grands Voiliers.
Third International Regatta for the
William I. Koch Sea Scout Cup
Miami Florida 23-29 July 2006
Since 2004 at two year intervals, the Sea Scouting
program of the Boy Scouts of America has
organized an International Regatta for the William
I. Koch Cup. This is open to active Sea Scouts
between the ages of 14 and 21. In 2006 the
five-day event was held at the Coral Reef Yacht
Club on Biscayne Bay in Miami, Florida.
About 60 Sea Scouts representing the various
regions of the Boy Scouts of America, as well as
Australia, New Zealand, and Norway, competed
in a series of match races, sailing in “420s.” The
Norwegian crew was the only European Region
crew to compete on this occasion. In 2004 crews
from Norway, United Kingdom and Ireland
participated. Preliminary races divided the
competition into two “fleets,” the primary fleet
competing for the Koch Cup, and the second fleet
competing for the Kiwi Cup. Wind conditions
ranged from six to seven knots at the start of the
regatta, to 15 to 20 knots on the final day.
The Koch Cup was won by the crew from Sea

La 3me Régate Internationale pour la
Coupe de William I. Koch
Miami, Floride, le 23-29 juillet 2006
Chaque deux années le Département Marin des
Boy Scouts of America organise une Régate
Internationale pour la Coupe de William I. Koch.
Ceci est ouvert aux Scouts Marins actifs entre 14
et 21 ans. Cette année l’événement de cinq-jour
s’est trouvé au Coral Reef Yacht Club sur la Baie
de Biscayne, Miami, Floride.
Environ 60
Scouts
Marins,
représentant
les diverses
régions des
États Unis,
et aussi
Australie,
Nouvelle Zélande, et Norvège, ont disputé une

série des courses de voile, naviguant dans
« 420s ». L’équipe norvégien était le seul équipe
du Région européen à cette occasion. Dans
2004, des équipes de Norvège, du Royaume-Uni
et d’Irlande ont participé. Les courses
préliminaires ont divisé la compétition dans deux
« flottes », la flotte primaire concourt pour la
Coupe de Koch, et la deuxième flotte concourt
pour la Coupe de Kiwi. Le fort du vent était six à
sept noeuds au début de la régate, mais 15 à 20
noeuds pour le jour final.
L’équipe de l’Unité Marine “Del Mar”, de
Californie, a gagné la Coupe de Koch, et
l’équipe de Nouvelle Zélande a gagné la
deuxième place. Dans la deuxième flotte, l’équipe
de Virginie a gagné la Coupe de Kiwi et l’équipe
de Norvège a gagné la deuxième place.
Northwest Small Ship’s Race - June 2006

The Northwest Small Ships’ Race from Glasgow in
Scotland to Belfast in Northern Ireland was held
on 19-20 June 2006, and was arranged by the
Association of Sea Training Organisations
(ASTO). Fifteen training yachts from 9 to 28
meters took part, with three boats entered by Irish
Sea Scouts from Dublin.
The Irish yachts sailed separately from Dublin on
13-15 June, arriving in Glasgow together on the
17th . The Glasgow Port Authority arranged social
activities and events for the crews: visits to the
science museum, activity centers, places of
interest, and a 5-a-side football tournament,
which was won by the Irish Scouts!
The race started at Gourock on Monday, 19 June
at 1300 hrs. The fast boats, including two of the
Scout boats, Yahtzee and New Moon, were soon
ahead, beating down the Firth of Clyde. The third
Scout boat, Cushag, was the smallest and slowest,
and by late evening all the other boats had
disappeared over the horizon!
Yahtzee crossed the finish line near Carrickfergus
at 0458 on Tuesday morning (taking first place in
Class D and fourth place overall), and New Moon
finished at 0745 (fourth place in Class D and
seventh overall). As the various craft finished, they
were escorted to the quays in Belfast. A southerly
gale was forecast for the afternoon, but this came
early, catching the slower boats still in the North
Channel. With the forecast increased to Force 9,
Cushag ran for shelter into Red Bay, County
Antrim, and was assisted onto a safe mooring at
about 1500 hrs. Contacted by mobile phone, the
Skipper of Yahtzee hired a car and brought the
crew of Cushag to Belfast to join in the festivities
organized by Belfast Harbor the next day. The Sea
Scouts won the football tournament again!

on Thursday

sailed south to
meet the

The three
boats left
Northern
Ireland on
Friday the 23rd and sailed in company to Peel, Isle
of Man. After a twenty-four hour stay in Peel we left
again and had a very pleasant night passage
southwards, entering our home harbor at lunch
time on Sunday 25 June.
Sixteen senior Scouts / Venture Scouts and 8
Leaders took part. During the 10 days each boat
sailed about 450 nautical miles, made three night
passages, had some interesting adventures and
won two football tournaments!
Course des Petits Voiliers du Nordouest
2006

La Course des Petits Voiliers du Nordouest s’est
tenu les 19/20 juin 2006, de Glasgow en Ecosse
à Belfast dans Irlande du Nord, organisé par
“Association of Sea Training Organisations”
(ASTO). Quinze yachts d’entraînement, de 28
mètres à 9 mètres, y ont participé, y compris 3
bateaux des Scouts Marins irlandais de Dublin.
Les yachts irlandais ont navigué séparément
depuis Dublin du 13 au 15 juin, arrivant à
Glasgow ensemble le 17. L’administration du Port

de Glasgow avait organisé des activités et des
événements sociaux pour les équipages - des
visites au Musée des Sciences, des centres
d’activités, des endroits intéressant, et un tournoi
de football par equipe de 5, que les Scouts
irlandais ont gagné!
La course à la voile a commencé à Gourock le
lundi 19 juin à 13h00. Les bateaux rapides, dont
2 des Scouts Irlandais, le " Yahtzee " et le " New
Moon", étaient rapidement en tête, louvoyant vers
le sud de l’Estuaire de Clyde. Le troisième bateau
Scout, " Cushag ", était le plus petit et le plus lent,
et au soir les autres bateaux avaient disparu à
l’horizon !
" Yahtzee " a traversé la ligne d’arrivée près de
Carrickfergus le mardi à 04h58 (et a gagné la
course des Classes D, et fut quatrième au
général), " New Moon " a fini à 07h45 (quatrième
des Classes D, et septième au général). Lorsque
tous les divers bateaux furent arrivés, ils ont été
escorté jusqu’aux quais de Belfast.
Un vent violent du sud était prévu pour
l’après-midi, mais il s’est levé en avance. Avec
une prévision météo réévaluée en force 9, le

"Cushag" s’est abrité à Red Bay, County Antrim, et
a été aidé pour s’amarrer vers 15h00. Contacté
par téléphone mobile, le Capitaine du "Yahtzee" a
loué une voiture et a amené l’équipage de
"Cushag" à Belfast pour participer aux festivités
organisées par le Port de Belfast le lendemain. Un
autre tournoi de football a été organisé, et
l’équipe des Scouts Marins a encore gagné!
Jeudi le 22, le "Yahtzee" et le "New Moon" ont
navigué de Belfast à Carrickfergus. L’équipage du
" Cushag " est retourné à Red Bay en voiture, et ils
ont preparé le bateau pour le voyage à
Carrickfergus afin de rencontrer les autres.
Vendredi le 23, les trois bateaux ont quitté
Carrickfergus et ont mis le cap sur Peel, Île de
Man. Après un séjour de vingt quatre heures à
Peel, nous sommes repartis, et avons fait une
navigation de nuit très agréable vers le sud, pour
rejoindre notre port d’attache, Dun Laoghaire.
Seize Scouts Marins et 8 responsables ont
participé, ont navigué environ 450 miles
nautiques, ont fait trois navigations de nuit, ont eu
quelques aventures intéressantes et ont gagné
deux tournois de football !

gathered at Vässarö in the northern Swedish
archipelago for the first Swedish National Sea
Scout Camp since 1968. The program included
sailing, canoeing, kayaking, how to stop a leak,
putting out fires, outboard motor school, first aid
including CPR and more.
On Monday July 24th, 125 boats (about 80
sailing boats) put to sea at the same time, a
record that will not be very easy to beat! On

Tuesday there was harbor day, with visits from
Swedish Sea rescue, Coast Guard, pilots, and a
racing boat. In the afternoon there was a sea
battle where each team tried to complete a course
with different kinds of boats the fastest way
possible, and with almost everything allowed. The
sea battle was visited by the local TV station.
At the end of the afternoon a rescue helicopter
showed how to rescue a person floating in the
water. The day ended with the arrival of 5
sailboats and one motor vessel from Finland. The
armada of southwest Finnish Sea Scouts visited
the camp for two days.

by the camp’s only rain. On Saturday the Scouts
went home and some of us had three to four days
of sailing before we could sleep in our own beds.

d’Allemagne a rassemblé à Vässarö dans
l’archipel du nord pour le premier Camp National
des Scouts Marins suédois depuis 1968. Le
programme a inclus la voile, le canoë-kayac,
comment arrêter une voie d’eau, éteindre des
feux, l’école
des moteurs
hors-bord,
Premiers
Secours (y
compris les
secours
cardiopulmonaires
), et
beaucoup
plus.
Lundi juillet 24e, 121 bateaux (y compris 80
bateaux à voile) ont navigué sur la mer en même
temps. Un
rapport pas
si facile à
battre!
Mardi il y
avait le “jour
du port”,
avec les
visites du
Secours de
Mer
Suédois, le
Garde de Côte, les Pilotes et un bateau de
course. Dans l’après-midi il y avait un combat de
mer où chaque équipe a essayé de compléter un
cours avec les genres différents de bateaux, la
façon la plus rapide possible, et (presque) tout a
été permis. Le combat de mer a été visité par la
ChaÍne TV locale.
Plus tard dans l’après-midi un hélicoptère de
secours a montré comment secourir une personne
flottant dans l’eau.
Le camp a terminé avec un grand feu de camp où
le nouveau logotype du Scoutisme Marin a été
présenté. Malheureusement la seule pluie du
camp a interrompu le feu de camp. Samedi les
Scouts sont rentrés à la maison, et certains de
nous avions 3-4 jour de voile avant que nous
pourrions dormir dans nos propres lits.
Argonauts will sail again!

Jason asked his cousin Argus to build a ship that
would help him and other 49 heroes reach
Colchis and steal the Golden Fleece. The ship
was named after its builder, Argo. This incident
took place before the Trojan War but now it is
time to live the myth again!
The new “Argo” is being built at the place where it
all started, Volos. It is being made of wood from
the mountain, Pelion, and is being built using
ancient construction techniques. It will be 28.5
meters long, 4 meters width and 2 meters high.
During the fall of 2006 the ship will sail from
Volos to Colchis, which is now in Georgia. Its 50
sailors will be from all over Europe.

The whole idea belongs to a research program
that is supported and funded by the Tourist
Department of Volos and a contribution from the
boat-building research institute Naudomos.

construire un bateau qui l’aiderait, avec ses 49
amis, d’aller à Colchis pour voler la Toison d’Or.
Le bateau a reçu le nom de son constructeur,
« Argo ». Cet incident a eu lieu avant la Guerre

A Volos, l’endroit où tout a commencé, le
nouveau Argo est en construit en bois de la
montagne Pelion et utilisant les techniques des
temps anciens. Le bateau aura 28,5 m de
longueur, 4 mètres de largeur et 2 mètres
d’hauteur. Pendant l’automne 2006, le bateau va
naviguer de Volos jusqu’à Colchis, situé
maintenant en Géorgie. Les 50 marins viendront
de l’Europe entière.
Ce projet appartient à un programme de
recherche intégré, qui est techniquement soutenu
et subventionné par le Département de Tourisme
de la Municipalité de Volos avec la contribution
du « Naudomos », l’institut de recherche de
construction de bateaux.
Sea Scout Boats in Norway

Norway is a small scout association with only
25,000 members. The Sea Scout section is also
small, with only about 15 groups and scouts not
exceeding 1,000. Nevertheless, several of the Sea
Scout groups are large, and the number of vessels
is comparatively high.
Normally
the groups
have small
dinghies for
the Cubs
and
youngest
Scouts. The
VG-dingy
(10 ft.) is
VG Dinghies in Norway
very
popular. For
the older scouts a number of different sail- and
power-boats are used. The Colin Archer type
boats (35 - 50 ft.) are popular. These boats were
originally built as rescue boats, and have good
sailing performance in bad weather. Four of these
boats will join the Sea Scout Armada to the 2007
World Jamboree.
The association’s training ship, Havbraatt, is a
relatively newly built sloop, 46 ft. long. The
previous sloop participated in the “Kattegat
conference” in Copenhagen in 1993, just prior to
the 1995 Sea Scout armada to the Netherlands.
In 1994 she had a major inspection that revealed
that the ship was in such a bad shape below the
waterline it had to be taken out of service as a
scout ship. The Norwegian Scout Association
subsequently decided to build a new ship and this
was
modified
and
adapted to
Sea Scout
activities.
The
construction
proved to
be a
Gyda and Havbraatt in regatta
success,
and the new
Havbraatt is now being sailed by Sea Scouts every
summer along the Norwegian coast. The
operational concept is that one specific group
takes the responsibility for maintenance in winter,

and uses the ship for own purposes during the last
months of operation in autumn, and the first
months in spring.

The Havbraatt was build at a shipyard in Risør, a
small town on the southern coast of Norway.
Risør has a long history for building wooden boats
of all types. (In this town there is an annual
“Wooden boat festival” which is very popular in
Norway.)

les Petits et les Mousses. Le VG-MITEUX (3.1m)
est très populaire. Pour les Marins, nous avons
plusieurs bateaux différents, les bateaux à voile et
à moteur. Le type de " Colin Archer " 10 - 15m
est populaire. Ces bateaux ont été construits au
début comme bateaux de sauvetage, et d’avoir la
bonne performance de voile dans le mauvais
temps. Quatre de ces bateaux participeront à
l’Armada des Scouts Marins au Jamboree en
2007.
Havbraatt will sail to the 2007 Jamboree together
with five other Norwegian scout ships. There will
be one Sea Scout troop aboard, bound for the
jamboree. The troop consists of 36 young Sea
Scouts and four leaders from all over the country.
The crew of the ships will consist of rovers/leaders
with long experience, and the objective of the
voyage is to give the young participants
international contacts along the way.
We hope many Sea Scouts will take our idea, and
join us for the event. We look forward to an
enjoyable sail with many Sea Scouts heading for
the same event.

Le vaisseau de formation de l’Association des
Scouts de Norvége, " Havbraatt ", est relativement
neuf, 14m (46 ft) long. Le " Havbraatt " original a
participé à " la conférence de Kattegat " à
Copenhague en 1993, puis à l’armada des
Scouts Marins en Hollande en 1995. Une
importante inspection en 1994 a démontré que le
bateau était dans un si mauvais état au dessous
de la ligne de flottaison qu’il a été retiré du
service en tant que bateau Scout. L’Association
des Scouts de Norvège a décidé de construire un
nouveau bateau, il a été modifié et adapté aux
activités des Scouts Marins. La construction a été
un succès, et le nouveau " Havbraatt " navigue
maintenant le long de la côte norvégienne
chaque été avec les Scouts Marins. Le concept
d’opération consiste à ce qu’un groupe spécifique
prenne la responsabilité pour l’entretien en l’hiver
et utilise le bateau pour eux-mêmes pendant les
derniers mois d’automne, et les premiers mois du
printemps.
Le " Havbraatt " a été construit dans un chantier
naval dans la petite ville de Risør, sur la côte sud

constitué de Chefs/Compagnons avec une longue
expérience, et l’objectif du voyage sera de donner
aux jeunes participants des contacts
internationaux le long de la route.
There are approximately 60 boats of this type all
over Greece. Only seven of these hulls are
fiberglass, which were built to test whether another
material could be used at a lower cost. The result
was proof that there is nothing better than a
wooden hull, for the following Scouting reasons:

Sea Scout Boats in Greece

For the last 50 years the Greek Sea Scouts have
used
wooden
boats
built by
tradition
al
technici
ans.
They are
8.5
meter
whalers
with a
transom, 10 oars, 2 wooden masts and booms
with triangular lateen sails and a small jib. Most of
them carry a bracket on their transom with an
outboard engine for safety reasons only, since the
Sea Scouts use only the traditional propulsion
(oars or sails).
These very seaworthy boats are the ideal size for a
patrol since they can easily accommodate twelve
persons. There is also a Skipper, his assistant, and
two experienced crew members in addition to the
7-8 Scout patrol who can help if some the Scouts
are new.

Only a wooden hull is capable of showing the
Scouts the way a boat is constructed and this
is more important for passing the tradition on
to the future as fewer wooden boats of any
type are being built;
All Scouts can be involved in boat
maintenance because wood is harmless (no
toxic paints, no dangerous dust from sanding
fiberglass);
It is believed that the first contact with the sea
should be on a traditional boat, in order to
get the spirit of real seamanship.
The Sea Scouts and Scouts of Greece really enjoy
using these boats and, as all Scouts of the world,
know how to enjoy life with and in Nature.
Finally, as is well known, if enjoying a boat trip
can be fun, enjoying a boat trip to the Greek
islands can be magic!

Pour le dernier 50 années les Scouts Marins grecs
utilisent des bateaux en bois, construits par les
techniciens traditionnels. Ils sont canots, longeur
8.5m, avec tableau arrière, 10 avirons, 2 mâts et
bômes de bois, avec les voiles latines et un petit
foc. La plupart d’eux portent un crochet sur leur le
tableau arrière avec un moteur extérieur, pour
raisons de sûreté seulement, parce que les Scouts
Marins utilisent seulement les méthodes
traditionnelles de propulsion (les voiles et les
avirons).

la Grèce. Seulement 7 des coques sont faits de
fibre de verre, pour évaluer un autre matériel
moins cher. Le résultat a démontré qui il y rien
mieux qu’une coque en bois, pour les raisons
suivantes qui sont très importants pour le
Scoutisme:

Seulement une coque en bois est capable de
démontrer aux Scouts la construction d’un
bateau et c’est trés important pour continuer
la tradition à l’avenir, comme on construira
moins des bateaux en bois;
Tous les Scouts peuvent aider l’entretien d’un
bateau de bois parce qu’il n’est pas nocif
(pas des peintures toxiques, pas de poussière
dangereuse avec ponçage au papier de verre,
comme d’une coque de GRP);
Aussi, on croit que le premier contact avec la
mer doit être sur un bateau traditionnel, pour
sentir l’esprit du vraie navigateur.
Vraiment, les Scouts Marins et les Scouts de
Grèce apprécient l’utilisation de ces bateaux et,
comme tous les Scouts du monde, ils aiment la vie
avec et dans la Nature.
Aussi, il est bien connu, si une croisière est
amusante, une croisière aux îles grecques est
magique!

It was unfortunately impossible to produce an
issue of Euronaut in July due to lack of material.
We are happy to say that the situation has
improved and we think that you will find this
issue very interesting.
We have published articles about International
Sea Scout Camps, training systems and centres,
voyages and adventure journeys, boats in Sea
Scout use, sailing 400 meters above sea level
(on Zurichsee), and more.
This year marked the 50th anniversary of the first
Tall Ships Race. One of the young trainees who
took part in that first race was a British Sea Scout
named Michael Nadin. Many Euronaut readers
know Mike as a UK delegate at the first four
European Sea Scout Leaders’ Seminars in
Thessaloniki, Harderhaven, Vässerö and
London. He was also largely responsible for
much of the organization of the Seminar in
London on board the Headquarters Training
Ship “Lord Amory” (Docklands Scout Project).
Mike took part in the 50th Anniversary Tall Ships
Race, this time accompanied by his grandson.
We think that his many Sea Scouting friends
throughout Europe will be interested to read his
account of the event. This is an abridged version
of the original from The Mariner, newsletter of
the London Dockland Scout Project and the
Discovery Sailing Project, used with kind
permission of the Editor.
There must be very many other good stories to
tell – please tell us!
This year was also 21 years since the First
European Sea Scout Leaders Seminar in
Thessaloniki. The regular meeting of Sea Scout
leaders from all over Europe has certainly
improved distribution of new ideas of training
and development in Sea Scouting throughout
Europe. The Seminars also led to the request for
more regular exchange of information between
Sea Scout leaders throughout the region, hence
the development of Euronaut. Increased
international contact has also shown us the
different ways that Sea Scouting benefits the
