Bietet 500 Gulden. Dafür gehört sie ein halbes Jahr ihm. Bin in Laune. Du bist so schön! Introduzione: adagio: a seguire. I timpani pulsano. Ancora no! Franz Winter 15 THE FOURTH In B flat major E Upon the invitation of Prince Lichnowsky at his summer residence Grätz near Troppau in Silesia, Summer /Autumn 1806 Brought some scores with me. Three unfinished quartets, sketches for two symphonies, in c minor and F major. Set out from Grätz with Karl Lichnowsky to visit Count Franz von Oppersdorf at his Oberglogau castle. The Count is an enthusiastic lover of music, admires my compositions. Has his own orchestra. In the evening of the day of our arrival my symphony in D in my honor. As far as I could see and sometimes hear, they were very good. The Prince confirms this. With great charm and much insistence, Oppersdorf asks for a symphony dedicated to him. At once, if possible. Offers 500 guilders. In return it will be his for six months. Am in the mood. Music must be possible on call, anywhere. But need some notes from Vienna for this symphony, as they could be used. Will be delivered by express messenger, past Bonaparte’s troops. Same orchestration as for the Second: strings, 2 flutes (changed to one as other flutist seemed not good enough to me), 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, timpani. Introduction: Adagio – will follow later. Allegro vivace: Is started up with much force, like a spinning top capable of 16 taking off, of flying. And it flies high, in generous ellipses, driven by timpani, by syncopations, spinning ever higher. Wind solos flash in the sunlight. But there: the top twirls out of the atmosphere, wobbles almost soundlessly, hardly visible anymore, appears to tumble, to fall. Only the timpani are heard while the spinning slows down. Yet upon re-entry into the reprise it starts to glow again, catches itself and flies faster, ludicrously faster than before, alarming in its sudden plunges and wobbling loops. Then it turns, and disappears. Adagio: So the machine must be restarted, this time by the second violins, like a flywheel. Its rotation is not quite regular, throughout the entire movement. But this rotation is the movement. And whenever it threatens to come to a stop it is urged onward again by beating timpani, blasting winds and string arpeggios. And what for? For this one sad melody of the first violins from which all other melodies develop, especially those of the beloved woodwinds. At one point even the bassoon all by itself gives the wheel another push so it will not stop turning, because if it did nothing would be left. But, thank God, the clarinet recalls the initial phrase, the violoncellos and the double basses have returned to their pulsating motion, a heartbeat taken up by the timpani, echoed by the horns, and finally the flute finds its way back to the melody. Thus they keep pushing one another onward, to prevent a standstill. The wind section, just once more. The timpani’s heartbeat. But then it must end. Allegro molto e vivace: After the victory in the second movement, the dance. Like an abridged polka. A wild dance! Will they do it as well in Silesia as in 17 Vienna? But in the trio they can take a breather: un poco meno allegro! And Bohemia is so close. Must be Bohemian musicians in Count Oppersdorf ’s orchestra. They don’t mind no matter how many repetitions there are; and there are rather more than usual, and modified as well! From the beginning! Allegro ma non troppo: A collective ecstasy! Obsessed! It must be possible! Nothing but incessant whirring by the strings, a vibration passed on to everyone and everything. Eight sixteenths above two quarters. Brief, hurried calls by the ones, breathless, brilliant replies by the others, alternating by sections, stimulating and provoking one another, urging one another onward. Breakneck wind solos, like improvisations. And suddenly, ever and again, a joint lunge forward into the stomping rhythm, like that of a Csárdás, all of them together, as though to reassure each other that they are all here – and on we go! On to the brink of disaster. General pause! And now the first violins begin to unfurl the sixteenth-based motions into a yearning melody, including the ironic suggestion of a swerve; exhausted, yet with a casual gesture the bassoons decline the offer and go for a fermata, as do the second violins, the violoncellos. Then they all plunge head over heels into silence. tion, a soft mournful tone, like a question: shall we remain here? But we move on. A journey into faraway, undefined worlds of sound, brighter, darker. The wind section follows suit, as though led blindfold, pauses at an opportunity, at a foreign shore. Which will not be trespassed upon. Cosmos. Galaxies mysteriously assigned to each other. Then, all of a sudden, a melody by the string section, as though they were setting Goethe’s “The Wanderer’s Night Song” to music: “Blissful peace, to my bosom hasten thou!” No! This must not be! Not here! Not yet! Not for a long time! So it is swept away, clamored away with the utmost force of negation. And instead, that dazzling spinning top is started, the Allegro vivace. In this Adagio Beethoven, for one eternal moment, lets us have a glimpse of his inexhaustible universe, a universe where everything can be done, if He wants it to be. Even this fourth symphony in B flat major. In spite of it all. Franz Winter The introductory Adagio, or: What is music born of? A note slashed into empty space by almost all the instruments. A B flat. Well, the key is B flat major, isn’t it? The wind section maintains the B flat, but the strings, in unison, infiltrate it, crush it: pale, gloomy. Where to? No path is visible. The first violins feel their way into nowhere. The bassoon makes a sugges18 19 THE SIXTH In F major THE PASTORAL SYMPHONY or Recollections of Country Life (more an expression of feeling than a painting in sounds) Pleasant, cheerful feelings awakened in man on arriving in the country. Scene by the brook. Merry gathering of country folk. Thunder. Storm. Shepherds’ song. Benevolent feelings, and gratitude to the Deity, after the storm. A symphony like this is simply impossible, has never been possible. Until He came and made it possible: “more an expression of feeling than a painting in sounds.” A miracle. The miracle in his entire oeuvre. Feeling! An expression of feeling! And a feeling that is linked with a place merely by association, or is sometimes loosely tied to it. To a place where one might live. Like to a recollection. How come that this place, defined by longitudes and latitudes like millions of other places on the planet Earth, is idealized in such an inconceivable way? Is this where paradise used to be? Somewhere between Grinzing, Heiligenstadt 20 and Nussdorf near Vienna? And only He knows it, knows where it is? Arcadia amidst the foothills of the Wienerwald, the Hermannskogel, Kahlenberg and Leopoldsberg, the hills between Nussberg and the Danube? Can the “feeling” awakened by this geographical micro-cosmos be expressed in terms of cartography? A “mapping of feelings,” so to speak? The beloved place – discovered by accident, enriched with typical local associative ingredients such as drone fifths, folk music, folk dance rhythms, swaying strings, blissful woodwind cantilenas, and birdcalls, too – becomes the possible medium for locating what “feeling,” pure feeling may be. Not more than that, but certainly not less, either. Blissful place of this world, to be forever linked with this feeling! But the real miracle is the feeling, this feeling! The unhappiest man in the world writes music of perfect bliss! And even the blustery thunderstorm (or is it the blood-red reflection of Napoleonic wars?) appears to bore into the darkened sky for the sole purpose of blasting it open again, like after a bad dream, to again draw light and warmth from it. Forever and in everlasting peace. A shepherds’ song, as though it would never end. Such sweetness of melody, such inexhaustible euphoria! The vision of everlasting peace embedded in “benevolent feelings, and gratitude to the Deity, after the storm,” after the war. After all wars. Here and now, eventually, there is time for “benevolent feelings”! 21 The initiation in the first movement, when the “pleasant, cheerful feelings” are awakened “on arriving in the country,” meaning in paradise, in an undreamedof state of bliss, is followed by the purest feeling of happiness ever expressed in music, that “scene by the brook,” that “Andante molto moto” capable of neutralizing all gravity by its twelve-eight time only to lose itself to a blissfully breathing, swaying rhythm of life which, indeed like a brook, seems to wash around islands, around boundaries made of nothing but beauty. Each articulation of each single instrument as an apotheosis of his self. Goethe’s or rather Faust’s main desire, main motto in life, his condition for making a pact with the devil: “If to the moment I shall ever say: ‘Ah, linger on, thou art so fair!’ … Then will I perish, then and there!” is met and fulfilled here by Beethoven. Only: Beethoven needs neither demons nor devils to accomplish this. What an amazing artistic process: he invents eternity, invents eternal happiness and bliss. And the nightingale, the quail and the cuckoo raise their voices for the sole purpose of reminding us that it can be done: the invention of happiness. Il me propose 500 florins. Michelangeli« in Brescia und Bergamo, Festival »Mozart« in Rovereto, »Gustav Mahler Musikwochen Toblach«, Internationaler »A. Pedrotti-Wettbewerb« für Orchesterdirigenten in Trient, Internationaler Klavierwettbewerb »F. Busoni« in Bozen, Tiroler Festpiele Erl usw.). Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro. 33 Foundation Haydn Orchestra of Bolzano and Trento Artistic Director: Gustav Kuhn E The Haydn Orchestra, recognized as a concert institution by the Italian Ministry of Tourism and Entertainment, was founded in 1960 by the provincial government and local authorities of Trento and Bolzano. It has played in the principal Italian concert venues and has participated in numerous international festivals (“Haydn” Festival in Esterhazy, Festspiele in Bregenz, “B. Michelangeli” International Festival in Brescia and Bergamo, “Mozart” Festival in Rovereto, “Settimane musicali G. Mahler” in Dobbiaco, “A. Pedrotti” International Competition for Orchestra Conductors in Trento, “F. Busoni” International Piano Competition in Bolzano, Tiroler Festspiele Erl, etc.). It has toured in the USA, Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, Austria and Hungary. In its over 46 year long history, the Haydn Orchestra has performed a vast amount of works across all musical genres, ranging from Baroque to contemporary composers. Renowned authors such as Dallapiccola, Nono, Berio and Donatoni have often assigned the Orchestra to important first performances. It has especially focused on an often neglected repertoire, also promoting the rediscovery of precious long-forgotten manuscripts, such as the “Dixit Dominus” by Domenico Cimarosa, performed for the first time in the modern era at the 30th Festival of Sacred Music, or the “Messe solennelle” by Hector Berlioz, the first modern-day performance of which in Italy was held last summer. The symphonic orchestra of Trentino Alto-Adige has hosted several great conductors, among them Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Muti and Riccardo Chailly. 34 The Haydn Orchestra has also an intense recording activity for CPO, VMC Classic, Agorà, ARTS, col legno and Universal. M.° Gustav Kuhn is its Artistic Director since 2003. Under his management the Orchestra performed, during the Symphonic Season 2005–2006, the complete cycle of the Nine Symphonies by Ludwig van Beethoven, arousing enthusiasm among both the audience and the music critics. In summer 2006 the Haydn Orchestra made its debut at the XXVII Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro.
