Motivated by the problem structure in data assimilation, we consider in this work the extension of the LMM algorithm to the scenarios where the linearized least squares subproblems are solved inexactly and/or the gradient model is noisy and accurate only within a certain probability. Under appropriate assumptions, we show that the modied algorithm converges globally and almost surely to a rst order stationary point. Our approach is applied to an instance in variational data assimilation where stochastic models of the gradient are computed by the so-called ensemble Kalman smoother (EnKS). A convergence proof in Lp of EnKS in the limit for large ensembles to the Kalman smoother is given. We also show the convergence of LM-EnKS approach, which is a variant of the LMM algorithm with EnKS as a linear solver, to the classical LMM algorithm where the linearized subproblem is solved exactly. Résumé : 4 Dual décomposition methods and parallel computing Jonas Koko ISIMA, Campus des Cézeaux - BP 10125 F-63173 AUBIERE cedex, FRANCE Courriel : [email protected] This talk presents decomposition/coordination methods in which the coordination step is ensured by a Lagrange multiplier. The problem must be reformulated as a constrained convex minimization problem by introducing a suitable auxiliary unknown. The role of the auxiliary unknown is to ensure the splitting of the problem according to certain properties (linear/nonlinear, smooth/nonsmooth) or size (domain decomposition). The Lagrange multiplier, for the coordination step, is associated with the continuity condition. The resulting dual (Uzawa) algorithm replaces the original problem by a sequence of uncoupled subproblems which can be solved in parallel. Résumé : 6 Conception d'un propulseur électrique : un problème d'optimisation topologique non-linéaire en 0-1 Frédéric Messine Courriel : [email protected] In this talk, I will present a method to solve inverse problems of electromagnetic circuit design which are formulated as a topology optimization problem. Indeed, by imposing the magnetic eld inside a region, we search a best material distribution into variable domains. In order to perform this, we minimize the quadratic error between the prescribed magnetic eld and the one computed by a nite element method. A dedicated software was developed in MatLab using fmincon routine and FEMM software. In order to perform the rst derivative of the objective function, we implemented an adjoint variable method. Indeed, this approach makes it possible to provide the derivative by only two uses of the nite element tool. Nevertheless, the problem is discrete because we take only two possibilities : with or without material. Thus, the Solid Isotropic Material with Penalization (SIMP) method was used to penalize intermediate values in order to have discrete solutions. Some numerical experiments from 20 and 1000 variables concerning circuit designs validated our approach. This represents a rst study to design a Hall eect thruster. Résumé : 7 A smoothing method for sparse optimization over polyhedral sets Tangi Migot Courriel : [email protected] We investigate a class of heuristics schemes to solve the NP-hard problem of minimizing the zero-norm of a vector over a polyhedral set. A simple and very often used approximation is to minimize the 1-norm. We are concerned about nding improved results in cases where the problem in 1-norm doesn't provide an optimal solution to the initial problem. We consider a relaxation technique using a family of smooth concave functions. This relaxation leads us to an homotopy method starting from the 1-norm problem to the initial problem. We analyze convergence, monotonicity of the solutions as well as error estimates leading to a sucient convergence condition. Our aim is to provide a general context for such concave relaxation method, but also keys for implementing the algorithm and numerical simulations. Résumé : 8 Exact algorithms for linear matrices towards semidenite programming Simone Naldi LAAS/CNRS : 7, avenue du Colonel Roche BP 54200 - 31031 Toulouse cedex 4 Courriel : [email protected] Linear matrices and their loci of rank defects arise as natural algebraic structures both in theoretical and in applicative problems, of particular interest in real algebraic geometry, polynomial optimization, control theory. For example, the feasible region of a semidenite program, called a spectrahedron, is a convex set whose algebraic boundary is shaped by the determinant of a symmetric linear matrix. Hence the solution to such an optimization problem corresponds to a positive semidenite linear matrix with rank defects. In this talk I will show how to design symbolic algorithms whose input is a linear matrix A and an expected maximal rank r, and whose output is a sample set of real points lying in the correspondent locus of rank defect. These algorithms and their complexity take strong advantage of the determinantal structure and of additional relations amongs the entries of A. Moreover, I will show how they can be used to decide the emptiness of low rank real loci and of spectrahedra, and hence to decide the feasibility of semidenite programs. The techniques involved can represent a basis to build a stronger symbolic approach to semidenite programming. Résumé : 9 Finsler gradient descent in Banach spaces Giacomo Nardi Postdoctoral researcher at MAPMO, University of Orléans Courriel : [email protected] In this talk we dene a new descent method to minimize an energy dened on a Banach space. We introduce a new denition of steepest descent direction which takes into account the geometric properties of the Banach space. This is useful in order to avoid local minima and generate an appropriated evolution. We apply this method to the matching problem of piecewise-rigid curves. Résumé : 11 Mixed integer nonlinear programming for aircraft conict avoidance Riadh Omheni Courriel : [email protected] In this talk, we consider the problem of aircraft conict avoidance in air trac management systems. Considering an initial conguration of a number of aircraft sharing the same airspace, the main goal of the conict avoidance is to detect and solve potential conicts in such a way that a minimum safety distance between each pair of aircraft is respected. We consider aircraft separation achieved by speed regulation and heading angle deviation. We propose mathematical models that are mixed 0-1 nonlinear optimization models, that are sequentially solved using standard state-of-the-art mixed-integer nonlinear programming solvers. Numerical results validate the proposed approach and clearly show the benet of combining the two considered separation maneuvers. Résumé : This is a joint work with Sonia Caeri. 12
