Camille Michel was born near Lille in northern France in 1988. She studied medicine before
discovering the visual arts and photography. She studied at the University Paris VIII and at the
National School of Photography in Arles. For her, the purpose of photography is to tell stories :
Stories not entirely true, not entirely false either, but stories which speak of the current
state of the world. She’s very curious about the daily life of small communities or people
who live far away from modern life, isolated, and differently from us. (Their lifestyle their
beliefs their traditions but also their changes and their problems...) For several years
she traveled to the Great North. She went to Lapland where she discovered the Sami
culture, then she decided to live on an isolated and mysterious island north of Greenland.
She’s inspired by those small villages away from the world, often plunged into boredom and oversight.
She try to recreate the atmosphere of those strange places through photography and video, also
giving her own point of view on the place. She often speak of “poetic document” to characterize her
work. She consider the photograph like a poet using his own experiences to describe the world...
She’s inspired by the works of Alec Soth, Evgenia Arbugaeva, Lucas Foglia, Corey Arnold...
Her work is published in New York Times Magazine, Wired, Photo Magazine, Libération...
She was awarded many prizes including the Syngenta Photography Award, LensCulture
Emerging Talent Awards, Libération Erwan Donnely prize, “la fondation Glénat” prize and
“La Filature, biennale de Mulhouse” prize. Her work has been exhibited in France, England,
USA, Italy, Brazil. She will have her first major solo exhibition at the Filature in Mulhouse in 2017.
Member of the studio Hans Lucas since 2015.
