Module 1: Tricky verbs
Episode 3
Emmener & amener
In this episode we will be looking at two verbs which appear to be quite similar but have
different meanings in French. With the help of the dialogues and lesson notes, you’ll
learn how to distinguish the two.
The first dialogue introduces the verb emmener.
Dialogue 1
Geoffroy:
Tu veux que je t’emmène au cinéma avec moi demain ?
Wendy:
Oui, avec plaisir. Qu’est-ce que tu veux aller voir ?
Geoffroy:
Je te laisse choisir.
Wendy:
Moi je dois emmener le chien chez le vétérinaire le matin. Tu voudras
l’emmener avec moi ?
Geoffroy:
Non, je préfère t’attendre à la maison.

Dialogue 2
Now consider the second dialogue which provides some examples of the verb amener.
Lola:
Zut ! J’ai un rendez-vous très important demain et ma voiture est en
panne.
Henri:
Je peux t’amener à ton rendez-vous si tu veux.
Lola:
Ça ne te dérange pas ?
Henri:
Pas du tout. J’irai faire des courses en t’attendant et quand tu auras fini je
pourrai te ramener à la maison.
Lola:
Merci.
Henri:
Il faut aussi que j’amène ma soeur à son cours de yoga demain, on
passera la chercher avant ton rendez-vous.

Further examples and exercise
Consider the two further examples using the verbs below and then try your hand at
translating some sentences into French.
Mon collègue de travail amène ses enfants à l’école tous les matins.
My work colleague brings / takes his children to school every morning.
Marie, je peux t’emmener à la plage cet après-midi si tu veux.
Marie, I can take you to the beach this afternoon if you want.
Now try translating the following sentences from English into French.
1. Would you like me to give you a lift home?
2. The taxi driver brought me to the hotel.
3. If you want I can take you back to the restaurant next month.
4. My sister is taking all the neighbour’s cats back to his garden.
