English p. DEutsch s. 1 Français p. 5 Español p. 30 Hilda Bronstein - Biography hilda Bronstein’s passionate dedication to Yiddish song stems from her close connection to the language which she learned as a child. she sees these songs as a cultural storehouse of Jewish history and identity. her early training as a singer at the royal college of Music in london, and her later work as an academic in English language and literature together inform her expressive interpretation of the music and words of these evocative songs. since 004, when she made her tentative return to the music of her childhood, she has become one of Europe’s leading interpreters of Yiddish song. after the success of her previous cD, Yiddish Songs Old and New (EucD054), she competed in the international Jewish Music Festival at amsterdam’s concertgebouw in 008 and was awarded the Mira rafalowicz prize for the Best interpretation of Yiddish song. the following year she was invited to appear at the amsterdam conservatory of Music in the iJMF winner’s event, where she was given a standing ovation. in and around london, she is now well known as a captivating performer giving concerts at which she not only seeks to reveal the extraordinary emotional range of the songs themselves, but also regaling audiences with the fascinating stories which surround them. in a bid to convey to others the joys of singing in Yiddish, hilda also gives inspirational song workshops under the title ‘sing Your roots’, and has taken masterclasses in Yiddish song at london’s Klezfest, at the spiro ark cultural centre and at the West road recital room in cambridge. For this cD hilda has joined forces with a group of talented instrumentalists who share her love of Yiddish song as well as the exciting sounds of klezmer and swing. the collaboration has enabled hilda not only to expand her repertoire of beautiful traditional Yiddish melodies and new songs from Eastern Europe. she has also added a number of exuberant up-beat numbers from the days of new York Yiddish theatre and demonstrates the resilience of Yiddish song by bringing this cD firmly into the twenty-first century with the cool beat of ‘Yener langer Zumertog’. as on her previous album, hilda uses her original polish dialect on some tracks and the standard ‘litvish’ or lithuanian dialect on others. While her natural tendency is to the native polish Yiddish of her childhood, she prefers the litvish in those songs where the meaning and rhymes of the lyrics seem to demand it. Whatever the dialect – the songs are sung with style and panache! Meg Hamilton (violin, viola) is the millennium award-winning fiddler with london’s she’koyokh Klezmer Ensemble and violist with the uK’s innovative Kosmos Ensemble. she arranges music to play with arabic ensemble Jaljala, and tours with la tipica flamenco contemporary dance company in south america as well as Europe. in 007 she performed solo violin in the acclaimed production of Fiddler on the Roof at the crucible theatre in sheffield, which was later transferred to london’s West End. Meg’s classical training combines with a wide experience of world music in her performance of traditional Jewish, Balkan and Middle Eastern fiddle styles. she collaborates with musicians from across the world and often travels abroad to perform. her most memorable performances to date were at amsterdam’s concertgebau with she’koyokh, on BBc radio 3 with Kosmos on ‘in tune’, with sean rafferty, at Birmingham symphony hall under the baton of Yehudi Menuhin with the Young Musicians symphony orchestra and playing in the premiere of a klezmer band concerto with she’koyokh at london’s Queen Elizabeth hall. Yair Schleider (keyboard, accordion, guitar, trumpet) studied piano and composition at the rubin conservatory in israel, and then joined the israeli indie-rock scene playing alongside inspirational singer-song writer Ethan Fisher, who became a major influence in his musical career. since arriving in london from israel seven years ago, Yair has played with some of the top performing artists in the uK. he toured the netherlands with pop diva lisa alea, played with Mentor Kolektiv at abbey road studios and toured the uK with Funk Federation. it didn’t take long after his arrival, however, for Yair to become part of london’s Jewish Music scene. he developed a keen interest in Klezmer and Yiddish music and has now played with performers such as Daphna sadeh, stewart curtis, the shir ensemble and many others. he has accompanied hilda frequently both in the uK and Europe. in 008 and 009 he participated as accompanist in the international Jewish Music Festival in amsterdam David Shulman (clarinet) grew up in a Jewish family of musicians, performing on stage in his parents’ klezmer band from an early age. he also has a very strong background in jazz, having graduated from the royal 3 academy of Music in June 005 where he majored in jazz performance. We rode out on the third sledge the bride’s side, the groom’s side, the musicians in amongst them. oh, oh – they were all playing but why was the bride silent? as we rode out, a rider flew by on horseback, and the bride blushed red as the flames of a bonfire. oh, oh – they were all silent – and only the bride was singing! little sledges, oh little sledges – you may as well turn back. and you dear bridegroom – woe is to you! oh, oh, look everyone – there goes a bridegroom without a bride – oh, oh, oh! 1. Our Cobbler in our little street, not far from the stream, Where the damp rooftops doze, there lived a cobbler – neither poor nor rich and he tapped little nails into the soles of shoes. and when you come to him – you are a welcome guest. You will receive a goblet of wine. so you drink lekhayim* and in the street there is heard a heartfelt Jewish melody. in the year forty-one he went away to fight the enemy and his workshop became silent. his honest cobbler’s hammer lies rusty in a corner to this day. he fell in battle fighting for his homeland a warm-hearted man, a man of soul! his children are now grown up – and sometimes at night. his wife sees him in her dreams… his old watch hangs on the wall, his picture in a simple frame. and when his wife wipes the dust away with her hand, she caresses his brow. and whenever there is a happy festive time in the street the little doves are playing by the brook then his children come to visit, and their father’s melodies ring out. *Lekhayim – a toast to life 15 14. Who will remain? What will remain? a phrase will remain to blossom once more at dawn into something newly created. a fiddle-rose will remain for its own sake seven blades of grass will understand it. More than all the stars from the farthest north to here, there will remain the one star that falls in a tear. Forever will a drop of wine remain in its jug. Who will remain? god will remain. is that not enough? 1 15. A Magic Life of Duke. 1.
