ONE ON ONE RENCONTRE LISE WATIER Sweet Smell of Success Un parfum de succès CANADA’S FIRST LADY OF BEAUTY, LISE WATIER, RUNS A COMPANY WITH A GLOBAL PRESENCE. SHE’S A TRUE BUSINESS SURVIVOR. PREMIÈRE DAME DE LA BEAUTÉ AU CANADA, LISE WATIER EST AUJOURD’HUI À LA TÊTE D’UNE ENTREPRISE RECONNUE DANS LE MONDE ENTIER. PORTRAIT D’UNE SURVIVANTE. By | Par Geneviève Saint-Germain SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE RARELY have dull stories. Every time you hear one of them tell all, what stands out is their courage in the face of life’s challenges and pitfalls. Montrealer Lise Watier is no exception. Widely known as Canada’s First Lady of beauty, she has won countless awards and honours since launching her line of cosmetics in 1972. Today, she’s reaping the rewards of her unflagging passion. Her health, makeup, and scent products are sold at Séphora, Bon Marché, La Samaritaine, and the Galeries Lafayette in Paris and at prestigious shops in Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Portugal, Spain, and Italy. Neiges, a perfume of which she’s especially fond, is still a top-seller in Quebec and is sold at Séphora in the United States. Since 2001, Watier Europe has had a boutique on Paris’s chic Avenue Montaigne. And that’s not all: if the entrepreneur has been keeping a low profile, it’s only because she’s been focusing on her business while making time to enjoy the finer things in life. As you look into Lise Watier’s clear eyes and listen to her composed voice, the strength she has brought to shaping her company is in full evidence. She is one of those women blessed with timeless beauty, her refined charm creating the impression that everything comes easily to her…but Lise Watier is actually a survivor of the cutthroat world of business. The proof is in the intensity with which she still speaks of the fire that dealt a serious blow to the company in 1990, of maliciousness in some quarters and condescension in others, of her struggles to get financing, and of the bankruptcy she narrowly averted. It all brings new meaning to the word resilience. Watier is a businesswoman who defines herself above all as a creative person, but she has shown time and again that she can also take big risks and be an accomplished business strategist. Her husband and business partner, Serge Rocheleau, is now in charge of the company’s day-to-day affairs. Watier doesn’t skip a beat: Rocheleau is a kindred soul. And coming from Lise LES GENS QUI ONT RÉUSSI ont rarement une histoire banale. Like many battlehardened businesspeople, she’s comfortable talking about the way her faith, intuition, and convictions have guided her all her life—and how signs and dreams have helped her build a successful company. “I was born under a lucky star,” she says. She also loves talking about her childhood and her close relationship with her father, her two daughters, and her three grandchildren. Her abiding affection for her family seems to nourish and sustain her. “You’re a woman, you’re beautiful, you’re one-of-akind.” That was Lise Watier’s motto in the early days, and those words are still pertinent when you consider that women’s self-esteem is a source of strength that’s in constant renewal. It’s one reason that women have been exceptionally loyal to Watier—along with the fact that she sees them as inspirations and accomplices. Still, a cornerstone of her success is the excellent value her products represent, and she makes a point of keeping value a priority. “When I was starting out, I was unknown. And when you don’t have a name, you’d better have an extraordinary product.” French women are among those who choose Lise Watier products primarily for their quality and effectiveness, passing over literally thousands of competitors. Some of those products, like Portfolio concealer and Mascara Sublime, are best sellers among beauty professionals. As for Neiges, it owes its success to its sweet, unmistakably feminine character. For industry observers, what stands out is the company’s ability to sustain long-term improvement in the quality of its products and, more importantly, in their positioning in a highly competitive market. Lise Watier and her team invest much devoted toil into maintaining that relevancy; and as the team’s ranking visionary, she’s a fount of insight. “I’m the one with the most off-the-wall ideas.” Everything interests and inspires her: movies, fine food, painting and, of course, the activities of her competitors worldwide. As the leader of a company she admits a few failings (like a habit of changing her mind mid-project, which can drive her collaborators to distraction), but she can’t be called authoritarian. “Even if we—my husband, my loyal colleague Daphnée Mollot, and I—are closely involved with all facets of the business, I don’t give orders.” It’s a safe bet that she doesn’t take any, either...except maybe from her grandchildren! 2 18 DESTINATIONS 1 l’entreprise.
