En 1957, l’exposition Gutaï Art sur scène commençait avec
le Sambasô ultra moderne de Kazuo Shiraga, qui était
une prise de position contemporaine sur le spectacle
d’ouverture du théâtre Nô, et jouait sur la suppression
des frontières entre la peinture et le théâtre. L’œuvre de
Shiraga prenait d’abord la forme d’une scène éclairée,
totalement vide à l’exception d’une rangée de pieux de
peinture. Les pieux tombaient un par un en produisant
une peinture qui se déplaçait dans le temps et l’espace
et intégrait le bruit des pieux touchant le sol. Au moment où cette abstraction géométrique se transformait
en un monochrome, Shiraga apparaissait sur scène en
portant un long nez pointu, un costume rouge munies
de longues manches renforcées et un chapeau pointu,
et se transformait ainsi en une ligne rouge ondulant sur
scène. Après cette danse, une armée de membres de
Gutaï se précipitait avec des arcs et des flèches, achevant le tableau en décochant des flèches contre la toile
de fond du décor. "Il y a lieu, dira-t-il, de se demander
si l’art est l’acte de lancer une flèche ou la surface que
celle-ci transperce1."
En octobre 1955, lors de la première exposition du
mouvement à Tokyo, Kazuo Shiraga présentait sa célèbre performance, Lutte avec la boue, dans laquelle il
se débattait avec un énorme tas d’argile mélangée à
du ciment qui avait été déversé dans la cour de l’espace d’exposition. Cette performance – qui fut répétée
à trois reprises pendant la durée de l’exposition mais
qui ne subsiste plus que sous forme de photographies
et d’une séquence filmée – donnait corps à l’exhortation de Jirô Yoshihara, le chef de file du groupe Gutaï, à
savoir créer une peinture d’un genre que personne n’a
encore jamais vu.
À l’époque de cette exposition, Shiraga avait déjà créé
des œuvres avec les pieds, et cette substitution du
corps humain au pinceau était alors totalement révolutionnaire. Pour lui, cette forme d’expression artistique,
qui passait entièrement par le corps, était une façon
de se confronter sans médiation avec le matériau. Plus
tard, il continuera de se servir de son corps comme
substitut d’un pinceau en peignant directement avec les
mains, la tête et les pieds. Sa technique la plus caractéristique, qu’il inaugure lors de la seconde exposition
Gutaï en 1956, consiste à déverser de la peinture sur
une toile posée à terre et à l’étaler avec les pieds tout
en se balançant suspendu à des cordes accrochées au
plafond. Il intégrait ainsi, dans la conception même de
l’œuvre, la chorégraphie et les mouvements aléatoires
de son corps, ce qui explique le dynamisme visuel particulier de l’œuvre et sa touche caractéristique, avec
ses grands arcs colorés. Shiraga espérait que le tableau
Shiraga est généralement considéré comme la figure de
proue du mouvement Gutaï, et, à mesure que grandira
sa réputation, il fera l’objet de diverses expositions au
Japon comme en Europe.
Dans les années 1960, Shiraga innovera occasionnellement dans les techniques ou instruments auxquels
il aura recours, par exemple en peignant à l’aide de
planches de bois ou en créant des objets en forme
d’éventail en papier. D’une façon générale, toutefois, il
changera relativement peu de technique et de style au
cours des cinquante années que durera de carrière.
En 1971, peu avant la mort de Yoshihara, Shiraga deviendra prêtre bouddhiste dans le monastère d’Enryaku, sur
le mont Hiei, près de Kyoto. Sous son nom de moine,
Sodo, il continuera à peindre jusqu’à la fin de sa vie.
