1.After25+yearsofloyalanddedicatedservice,SgtPhilBurnettwillbeengagingthepark
brakeonelasttimeon25June2016andretiringfromtheCanadianArmedForces.
2.In1991,attheageof21heleftuniversityandjoinedtheCAF.Uponcompletionofbasic
trainingatCFBCornwallis,hewassenttoCFBSt-JeantoattendFrenchlanguagetraining.QL3s
camenextandthenin1992hewaspostedtoCFBGagetowninwhereheestablishedasolid
backgroundinalltypesofMSE,workinginSPV,bussectionandrefueling.Heplayedsoccerfor
themen'sbaseteamandwasthecoachoftheladiesbaseteam.
3.HewaspromotedtoCplin1995andin1996hewaspostedtoCFBBordenwherehe
spentmostofhiscareer.Philiphadtheopportunitytoworkineverysectionatbasetransport
aswellholddowneverysinglekeypositionavailablesuchasdispatcher,trainingNCO,rentals
NCOetc.HealsoworkedatCTCBlackdownTPTfor2summerswithcadets.
4.In1998hewascalledouttoQuebecfortheicestorm.Thesummerof1999hewassent
tothelanguageschoolattendinghissecondyearlongFrenchlanguagetrainingcourse.Asa
secondaryduty,Philipworkedforthebaseaddictionscounsellorfrom2001to2005facilitating
drugandalcoholawarenesslecturesbasewideandfrom2005untilheleftin2012workedfor
PSPasfacilitatorandwastheirSMEwhentheytookovertheresponsibility.
5.PromotedtoMCplinMay2007andwasimmediatelysenttoSt-Jeantocompleteand
passaGMTI-IT.Followingthis,hewaspostedtoCFLRSSt-JeanBordenDettoteachrecruits.He
spent4yearsheregraduatingbacktobackcoursesthewholetimeatanextremelyhightempo.
Heputthru12coursesandapprox.1000troops.Inhisfinalyearhewasasectioncommander
fortheGMTI-ITtrainingnewinstructors.Itwasalsoduringthistimeframethathehelpedcreate
andadviseonthepilotprogramfortheCAFSupervisorsdrugandalcoholawarenessprogram
withPSP.
6.Inthespring2012anduponhispromotiontoSgt,hewassenttoCFBPetawawa.After
workingasasectioncommanderforacouplemonthsin2SvcBattalion,hewassentonworkup
traininginCFBShilo.HedeployedtoAfghanistanfromJunetoDec2013wherehewas
employedasthecampfleetmanager,overseeing125vehicleswithintheAmericanand
Canadianfleet.Hewasawarded2commander’scoinswhiledeployedoverseas,onefrom
CanadaandtheotherUSA.OncebackatthebattalionhewasplacedinAPladminSgtposition
untilhiseventualpostingtoJPSUin2015.
7.Philwouldliketothankhisfamilyandthosepersonnelwhohavebeeninfluential
throughouthiscareer.Heisextremelyproudandhonoredtohavebeenapartofthetrucker
family.Inadditionhewilltrulymissthosemanyfriends,colleaguesandacquaintancesthathave
madehistimeintheCF,memorable.PhilipwillbereturningtohishometownofSaintJohnNB
uponretirementwhereheplanstoeitherfinishhisdegreemajoringinsocialworkordo
somethinginthefieldofaddictions

destationnementpourladernièrefoisle25juin2016,etilprendrasaretraitedesForces
arméescanadiennes.

canadiennes.Unefoisl’instructionélémentaireterminéeàlaBFCCornwallis,ilaétéenvoyéàla
BFCSt-Jeanpoursuivredescoursdelanguefrançaise.LescoursdeNQ3ontsuiviet,en1992,il
aétéaffectéàlaBFCGagetownoùils’estacquisunsolidefondementdanstouslestypesde
MMS,travaillantauxVS,àlasectiondesautocarsetauravitaillement.Ilajouéausoccerpour
l’équipemasculinedelabaseetaétél’entraîneurdel’équipefémininedelabase.
3.Ilaétépromuaugradedecaporalen1995eten1996,ilaétéaffectéàlaBFCBorden
oùilapassélamajeurepartiedesacarrière.Philipaeul’occasiondetravailleràchaquesection
destransportsdelabaseenplusd’assumertouslespostesclésqu’onytrouve,commeceuxde
répartiteur,desous-officierdel’instruction,desous-officierchargédeslocations,etc.Ilaaussi
travailléauservicedeTptduCICBlackdownpendantdeuxétésaveclescadets.
4.En1998,ilaétéappeléauQuébecdurantlatempêtedeverglas.Àl’été1999,ilaété
envoyéàl’écoledelanguespourundeuxièmecoursd’unanenlanguefrançaise.Commetâche
secondaire,Philipatravaillécommeconseillerenpréventiondelatoxicomaniedelabasede
2001à2005endonnantdesconférencesdesensibilisationenmatièrededroguesetd’alcoolà
l’échelledelabaseetdès2005jusqu’àsondéparten2012,ilatravailléauPSPcomme
animateur,etilaétéleurEMlorsqued’autresontassumélaresponsabilité.
5.Ilaétépromuaugradedecaporal-chefenmai2007,etilaimmédiatementenvoyéàSt
Jeanpoursuivreetpasseruneformationd’IFMG-TI.Aprèscela,ilaétéaffectéauDétBordende
l’ELRFCSt-Jeanpourenseignerauxrecrues.Ilyapassé4ans,etpendanttoutcetemps,ila
cumulantlescoursqu’ilaréussisàunrythmeextrêmementélevé.Iladonné12coursetformé
environ1000soldats.Àsadernièreannée,ilétaitcommandantdesectionpourl’IFMG-TIà
formerdesinstructeurs.C’estaussidurantcettepériodequ’iladonnédesconseilsetaidéà
créeraveclePSPleprogramme-piloteduprogrammedesensibilisationenmatièrededrogues
etd’alcoolpourlessuperviseursdesFAC.
6.Auprintemps2012etàsapromotionaugradedesergent,ilaétéenvoyéàlaBFC
Petawawa.Aprèsavoirtravailléenqualitédecommanderdesectionpendantquelquesmoisau
2eBonsvc,ilaétéenvoyéàl’entraînementpréparatoireàlaBFCShilo.Ilaparticipéàun
déploiementenAfghanistan,dejuinàdéc.2013,oùilaétéemployécommegestionnairedu
parcducamp,superviseur125véhiculesauseindesparcsaméricainsetcanadiens.Ils’estvu
décerner2médaillonsducommandantpendantqu’ilétaitenmissionàl’étranger,l’undu
Canadaetl’autredesÉtatsUnis.Unefoisderetouraubataillon,ilaétéplacéàunpostedesgt
adminduPonAjusqu’àsonéventuelleaffectationàl’UISPen2015.
7.Philaimeraitremerciersafamilleetlesmembresdupersonnelquionteuuneinfluence
toutaulongdesacarrière.Ilestextrêmementfierethonoréd’avoirfaitpartiedelafamilledes
camionneurs.Enoutre,ilvavraiments’ennuyerdesesnombreuxamis,collègueset
connaissancesquiontrendusesannéesauseindesFCmémorables.Aprèssaretraite,Philip
retourneradanssavilled’origine,soitSaintJohn(N.B.),oùilprévoitsoitfinirsondiplôme
spécialiséentravailsocialsoittravaillerdansledomainedesdépendances.
8.UnecérémonieinformelledeDépartdansladignitéenl’honneurduSgtBurnettaura
lieulevendredi24juin2016,auJubileeLodge,garnisonPetawawa,enmêmetempsquelepot
