But you don’t need to be a professional – simply hop on your bike and set off to explore the region’s fabulous network of routes away from bustling town centres and road traffic. Greenways Cycling fans and ramblers will soon be able to enjoy an outstanding network of specially developed routes stretching over more than 2000km, including 1000km of greenways. Travelling along Brittany’s coastlines or the Nantes-Brest canal, travelling from the Pink Granite Coast to the Gulf of Morbihan without meeting a single car, skirting inland Brittany’s towns of character and beautiful natural sites – this will all soon become a reality for the region’s visitors. The region’s greenways (currently 840km) take cyclists and hikers to the heart of the Argoat, rural Brittany. These paths follow the routes of old railways, towpaths and forest trails, and are only open to non-motorised transport. Where they are not tarmacked, they are levelled for the safety and comfort of those using them, whether cyclists, horse riders, pedestrians or skaters. These routes are punctuated with “Relais-Rando” facilities, which offer specific services to those using the greenways. Plus d’informations au 02 99 23 92 83 - www.cprb.org Brittany is a region with a strong urban tradition and its towns contain an impressive wealth of heritage. Ancient religious centres, mediaeval towns – these urban areas offer architectural beauty with a singular character. The region boasts 22 Small Towns of Character, 9 Historical Towns and 10 Towns of Art and History which can be explored through events and discovery visits led by heritage or tourist guides. For more information about Brittany’s Towns of Art, contact the tourist information centres or request the brochure “ Towns of Art in Brittany” at +33 2 99 36 15 15 or www.brittanytourism.com Les villes d’Art et d’Histoire Towns of Art and History Les petites cités de caractère Small Towns of Character The Association of Small Towns of Character in Brittany comprises around twenty small rural settlements. These characteristic historical towns contain outstanding urban heritage, reflecting their history and their former prestigious role. Brittany’s Towns of Art and History, officially recognised by the French Ministry of Culture, are defined by the outstanding quality of their architectural and urban heritage and their strong cultural tradition. Since 1984, most of them have been grouped into a regional association. They have together drawn up a quality charter with the aim of making each of these towns a tourist destination in its own right. Brittany’s Towns of History, although members of the Union of Towns of Art and History of Brittany, have not been officially listed or recognised but have been selected by the Union for the quality and importance of their heritage and their historical centres. They enjoy the patronage of the Towns of Art and History. Virtually the entire region of Brittany – some 1300km! – can be toured by following the “customs trail”. The trail begins at the port of Saint-Nazaire, in the LoireAtlantique département, and finishes at the entrance to the Mont-Saint-Michel, in the Manche département. Running alongside capes, headlands, dunes and beaches, this trail reveals superb landscapes. It once played a vital role in monitoring the coastlines – this coastal path was built to prevent smuggling and looters, hence its name the “customs trail”. But times have changed. The customs trail was given special protection status by the local communities and has now been specially developed for hikers, It has become a Grande Randonnée trail (the famous GR34) and now belongs to nature lovers, fans of the outdoors, sports enthusiasts and all those who simply enjoy taking a stroll. In the 12th century, people used to honour the seven founding saints of Christianity in Brittany by touring the region and visiting their tombs. This pilgrimage followed ancient routes linking these seven first bishoprics: pilgrims would visit the tombs of Saint Samson in Dol de Bretagne, Saint Paterne in Vannes, Saint Corentin in Quimper, Saint Pol Aurélien in Saint Pol de Léon, Saint Tugdual in Tréguier, and Saint Brieuc and Saint Malo in their respective towns. This Tro Breizh (Tour of Brittany) took a circular route around the peninsula and was believed to guarantee pilgrims their place in heaven. The Tro Breizh tradition, forgotten for several centuries, has today been revived by believers and hikers, who once again gather for this tour of Brittany’s religious heritage. Pour en savoir plus : www.tourismebretagne.com ou www.shom.fr In Brittany, the rise and fall of the tide provides two magnificent natural spectacles every day! Shaping the coastal landscape, the sea covers and uncovers the beaches and rocks along the coastline twice a day, resulting in startling transformations on a daily basis! The flood tide or rising tide covers the sand and rocks, drowning the landscape under a shimmering sheet of blue. The ebb tide signals the retreat of this vast blue surface, which leaves in its wake seaweed, pebbles, shells and the carapaces of shellfish on sand striated by the undulating waves. The tides clean the shore and recharge the coastal water with oxygen, an essential element for marine life. Every six hours, the sea is transformed by an external force, with sun and moon creating a magnificent spectacle. No other landscape can offer such diversity, no other natural site undergoes such constant metamorphosis. High tide is a paradise for bathers and the delight of watersports fans. Low tide is the perfect moment for sea fishers, an ideal opportunity for discovering wildlife usually hidden by the sea. Further information is available at the tourist information centres and tourist boards, which publish tide times for the local area. Generally located around a cemetery, the enclosures contain a church, ossuary and calvary. These calvaries are typically Breton and are based on the “Christianised” standing stone and the wayside cross; they illustrate episodes from the Bible and are a genuine granite “picture book” which would once have been used for teaching the people. Most parish enclosures are located in the Léon area in Finistère; fans of Breton art will particularly admire the enclosures in Saint Thégonnec, LampaulGuimiliau and Sizun. Morbihan also boasts a magnificent 16thcentury enclosure in Guéhenno, the département’s only parish enclosure and a real architectural gem. Le Tro Breizh Around thirty villages have been officially recognised as Brittany’s “Rural Heritage Villages”. They share the common aim of preserving, promoting and bringing to life their architectural and landscape heritage. Hiking circuits and country walks will help visitors to explore these small villages full of character. The French Tourism & Disability seal is awarded to tourist accommodation, sites and visitor areas that provide a warm welcome and a high level of accessibility. Brittany is a tourist destination that is accessible for everyone! The aim is to offer optimal, if not total, accessibility to Brittany’s tourist areas and to the sites and services on offer. For a list of accessible, officially listed Tourism & Disability establishments and leisure facilities, consult the site of the FRPAT (regional federation of Brittany’s tourist areas) at www.frpatb.net or visit the websites of the departmental tourist boards, which publish a regularly updated list.
