“Fast Twitch// Slow Twitch is a video made as part of an endurance performance entitled
Cuts: a Traditional Sculpture. When installed in a gallery setting, Fast Twitch// Slow Twitch
uses two large screens. One of these screens displays a time-lapse animation that collapses
the 23 weeks of daily photographs of Cassils’s transformation into 23 seconds, while the
other screen juxtaposes the speed of the time-lapse with highly stylized scenes in painful
slow motion, scenes which depict a process laden with exhaustion, pain, nausea, trembling,
and jouissance.”

Cassils is a performance artist, body builder and personal trainer, originally from Montreal,
Canada and now based in Los Angeles, US. Cassils' work uses the body in a sculptural
fashion, interrogating feminism, body art, and gay male aesthetics. Recent exhibitions
include: solos at Trinity Square Video (Toronto) and Ronald Feldman Fine Arts (NYC),
screenings at ICA (London), performances at The National Theater Studio (London) and
commissions by Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (Pacific Standard Time). Cassils
writings are published in Signs: Journal of Women and Culture in Society and Commerce By
Artists, edited by Art Metropole. Listed by the Huffington Post as one of 10 Transgender
Artists Who Are Changing The Landscape Of Contemporary Art and featured on the covers
of multiple journals (TDR, Performance Research and College Art Association’s Art Journal).
Cassils received a MOTHA (Musueme of Transgender Hirstory) award (2013), Visual Artist
Fellowship from the Canada Council of the Arts (2012-13), California Community Foundation
Grant (2013), Rema Hort Mann Visual Arts Fellowship (2014), the ANTI Festival International
Prize for Live Art (2014) and the Creative Capital Grant (2015). Cassils first European solo

Have You Ever Seen A Transsexual Before? Ce vidéo est deux choses à la fois, il
documente une performance dans un « monde réel » aliénant ainsi qu'une aventure
fantastique dans un autre monde, un monde d'apparence et d'identité queer. La première
moitié du vidéo documente une performance de type guérilla qui par la répétition, devient
une déclaration, une campagne pour la visibilité des hommes transexuels (FTM). Lorsque
cette campagne s'avère futile, j'entre dans un monde animé et magique où je peux observer
et où je suis accueilli par une vie sauvage aussi flamboyante que colorée. Dédié à l'ami Sam
Lopes.
Have You Ever Seen A Transsexual Before? is both a document of a live performance in
the alienating “real world” and a fantastical adventure into another world of queer likeness
and identification. The first half of the video records a guerilla performance, and through
repetition, becomes a declaration and a campaign for Female-To-Male (FTM) transsexual
visibility. When the campaign proves futile I enter a magical animated world where I observe
and am greeted by colorful and flamboyant wildlife. Dedicated to friend Sam Lopes

Chris E. Vargas est cinéaste et artiste interdisciplinaire. Il réside en ce moment à Bellingham,
WA aux États-Unis. Son travail se déploie en conjoncture avec le langage de la culture de
masse. Il explore les manières complexes par lesquelles les personnes queer et trans
parviennent à créer des espaces pour eux-mêmes à l’intérieur des mémoires historiques et
institutionnelles de la culture populaire. De 2008 à 2013, en collaboration avec Greg
Youmans, il a réalisé une web-série (sitcom) trans/cisgenre intitulé Falling In Love... with
Chris and Greg. En collaboration avec Eric Stanley il a co-réalisé le film Homotopia (2006) et
un long-métrage à paraître, Criminel Queers. Il est également le directeur exécutif du
MOTHA, Museum of Transgender Hirstory & Art, une institution dédiée à l’art conceptuel et
l’hirstory, qui met de l’avant les contributions de l’art trans dans le paysage culturel et
politique. Son travail est diffusé aux États-Unis et à l’international.
I am a video maker & interdisciplinary artist currently based in Bellingham, WA USA. My
work deploys humor and performance in conjunction with mainstream idioms to explore the
complex ways that queer and trans people negotiate spaces for themselves within historical
& institutional memory and popular culture. From 2008-2013, I made, in collaboration with
Greg Youmans, the web-based trans/cisgender sitcom Falling In Love...with Chris and Greg.
With Eric Stanley, I co-directed the movie Homotopia (2006) and its forthcoming featurelength sequel Criminal Queers. I am also the Executive Director of MOTHA, the Museum of
Transgender Hirstory & Art, a conceptual arts & hirstory institution highlighting the
contributions of trans art to the cultural and political landscape.

Zahra et Claude se sont rencontrés pour la première fois le 13 septembre 2014 à la prison
de Bath, ON, au Canada, où réside Zahra, après une correspondance par lettres d'environ
une année. Claude a proposé à Zahra qu'ils dessinent ensemble et en même temps, sur la
même feuille de papier, et que ce dessin soit présenté par Ianna Book pour la première
exposition de Trans Time à Montréal. Zahra a accepté et Claude a caché le petit dessin pour
pouvoir le sortir de la prison (une photo de la pièce se trouve en annexe à ce projet). Pour
Trans Time Berlin, Zahra et Claude vont établir deux lignes de travail: 1) un échange de
dessins par correspondance et 2) un enregistrement son d'une conversation téléphonique.
Pour les dessins, Claude se propose de répondre à un dessin que Zahra va lui envoyer et va
demander à Zahra de répondre à l'un de ses dessins. Les réponses seront générées en
suivant un protocole d'accès aux couches les plus profondes de l'imagination
(http://exploringcreativity.org/page23/styled-2/page10.html). Le protocole devra être adapté à
la situation de Zahra (par ex.: elle n'est pas autorisée à utiliser des crayons de couleur pour
son art). Pour l'enregistrement, Claude et Zahra s'entendront sur les paramètres de leur
conversation téléphonique à l'avance. Claude propose que la conversation se fasse en
égalité et sur l'égalité.
Zahra and Claude: 2ème action, 2015
Zahra and Claude met for the first time on September 13, 2014 at the Bath prison, in Ontario
Canada, where Zahra is currently residing. They had already been corresponding through
letters for about one year. Claude suggested that they draw at the same time, on a single
piece of paper and that they present their drawing in Trans Time Montréal, curated by Ianna
Book. Zahra accepted and Claude hid the drawing in his clothing to be able to take it out of
the prison (photo of this drawing attached). For Trans Time Berlin, Zahra and Claude will
proceed through two lines of action: 1) exchange of drawings through snail mail and 2) sound
recording of a phone conversation. For the drawings, Claude will respond to one of Zahra's
drawings and he will ask Zahra to respond to one of his drawings. The responses will be
generated through specific protocol that facilitates access to deep layers of the imagination
(http://exploringcreativity.org/page23/styled-2/page10.html). The protocol will be adapted to
Zahra's situation (for ex.: she is not allowed to use colour pencils for her drawings). For the
sound recording, Zahra and Claude will agree in advance about the parameters of their
conversation. Claude will suggest that the conversation be egalitarian and about equality.
Bio
Claude Wittmann travaille comme mécanicien sur vélo et artiste de performance. Au travers
de ses actions artistiques, il vise à créer des situations qui génèrent une sensation
authentique d'égalité avec quelqu'un d'autre tout en provoquant une réflection incarnée sur
l'égalité et l'identité de genre. Wittmann utilise souvent, mais pas nécessairement, la radio
pour son travail, en diffusion locale ou plus large avec des stations de radio établies ou
encore sur la toile internet. En cours: animation et préparation d'un petit groupe de trois
personnes en vue de la présentation de “Internal Democracy”, à l'Hôtel de Ville de Toronto,
avec la collaboration et le support de New Adventures in Sound Art (NAISA).

Claude Wittmann works as a bicycle mechanic and as a performance artist. His actions aim
at creating situations that generate an authentic sensation of equality while provoking an
embodied reflection about equality and gender identity. Wittmann often, but not necessarily,
uses radio transmission for his work, in narrow-cast, broadcast with established radio
stations or webcast. Currently: leading a small group of three participants towards “Internal
Democracy” which will be presented at Toronto City Hall with the collaboration and support of

Title: Rituals for Change, performance
Rituals for Change is a new live theatre performance exploring themes around change,
gender transition & transgender identity, created in collaboration with Eilidh MacAskill (Fish
and Game; Gendersaurus Rex) and Myriddin Wannell (Wild Works). The performance is a
series of rituals created to explore a gender transition and our shared fears and approaches
to major life changes. It uses materials with different transformative properties, such as
water, clay, salt and ink to create strong visual imagery and physical images which are
messy, intense and celebratory.

Basée à Londres, Emma Frankland est une artiste qui a remporté des prix de production
théâtrale et d'interprète britannique. Son travail artistique est variée et flexible. Elle a été
présenté au Conseil Showcase britannique au Festival d'Edimbourg en 2013 avec une
adaptation anarchique de «Don Quichotte». Le spectacle a remporté le prix "choix de la
critique" au festival Wildfire 2014 Ignite, a fait le tour du Royaume-Uni et a voyagé à l'échelle
internationale, apparaissant à Rio de Janeiro au Festival del Tempo. Elle a collaboré avec de
nombreuses entreprises, y compris Chris Goode & Company, Wildworks, Laura Mugridge,

She has created a diverse collection of work and was featured in the British Council

OK Lucid est une recherche esthétique dans laquelle j’explore les perceptions du public sur
ma transsexualité par l’entremise d’un site de rencontre en ligne. Il s’agit d’un moment de
lucidité. L’interaction prend forme dans l’espace de séduction par de nombreux messages
reçus en tant que femme à priori cisgenre. L’expérience consiste par la suite à me dévoiler
en tant que femme transsexuelle. Sur l’ensemble des hommes qui m’ont contactés : 50% ont
cessés de m’écrire, 20% sont curieux, 10% sont confus, 10% sont séduits, 9% sont négatifs
et 1% autres. Ce projet interactif donne l’heure juste sur la façon dont les hommes
m’appréhendent et porte un regard plus général sur le conception social qu’ils se font de la
femme.

Ianna book est une artiste trans multidisciplinaire qui vit et travaille à Montréal, QC, Canada.
Elle a étudié en arts plastiques au Cégep du Vieux-Montréal (1997-2000) ainsi qu'en arts
visuels et médiatiques à l'Université du Québec à Montréal (2001-2005). Ses oeuvres ont été
présentées dans le cadre de plusieurs expositions collectives depuis 2001. En 2011, elle
présenta à la Radical Queer Semaine sa première oeuvre en tant que femme trans. Au cours
de sa période de transition (2010-2013), elle a publié Trans Avenue, un essaie
photographique jumelant transsexualité et urbanité. En 2014, elle organisa, en collaboration
avec Virginie Jourdain et Marie-Claude G. Olivier, Trans Time, une exposition internationale
d'artistes trans à Montréal. Ianna s'est aussi méritée une exposition solo au Leslie & Lohman
Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art, New York au printemps 2016. Elle fait actuellement partie
de la sélection du Elisabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art du Brooklyn Museum.
------------------------------------------------Ok Lucid is an aesthetic research in which I explore the public perceptions over my
transsexuality by means of an online dating site. This is a moment of lucidity. The interaction
takes shape in sexually-charged messages received as a cisgendered perceived woman.
The experiment progresses with a disclosure of myself as a transsexual woman. From the
group of men that contacted me: 50% cease responding, 20% are curious, 10% are
confused, 10% are turned-on, 9% respond negatively and 1% other. This interactive project
gives an accurate picture of how men apprehend me and carries a more general look at the
social
design
that
makes
the
woman.

Ianna Book is a multidisciplinary trans artist living and working in Montreal, QC, Canada. She
has studied Fine Arts at Cegep du Vieux-Montreal (1997-2000) and Visual and Media Arts at
Universite du Quebec à Montreal (2001-2005). Her work has been featured at several group
shows since 2001. In 2011, she presented her first trans project at Radical Queer Semaine in
Montreal. During a period of transition (2010-2013), she published Trans Avenue, a
photographic essay on transsexuality and the urban context. In 2014, she organizes, in
collaboration with Virginie Jourdain and Marie-Claude G. Oliver, Trans Time, an international
transgender group exhibit in Montreal. Ianna has also presented a solo exhibition at Leslie &
Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art, New York in spring 2016. She is currently part of
the selection of Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum.

Alone Time est une série de portraits aux couleurs vives de couples partageant des
moments domestiques intimes. Cependant, chaque « couple » est en fait composé d’un seul
sujet jouant à la fois le rôle masculin et féminin. En illustrant l’aptitude d’un corps à incarner
deux genres avec conviction, mon projet remet en question les représentations
contemporaines des rôles liés aux genres binaires. Cette décision conceptuelle de dédoubler
la présentation physique d’un même corps remet en question les stéréotypes normatifs de
genre et illustre que l’expression de genre peut être fluide et multiple. Je cherche aussi à
questionner la rhétorique de la représentation : bien que les portraits individuels sont tirés
sur des diapositives, scannés, séparés en couches et assemblés en collage digital afin de
concrétiser l’illusion finale d’un portrait à « deux », aucun aspect de la présentation de genre
du sujet n’est altéré. Les portraits sont une réussite, car ils offrent un visuel convaincant sans
avoir manipulé les caractéristiques sexuelles des sujets autrement que par le maquillage, le
vêtement et la posture, démontrant ainsi que l’identité de genre est malléable. Alone Time
est hautement esthétique, à la fois amusant et déroutant sur le plan visuel, et porte à la
réflexion.

JJ Levine est un artiste montréalais réalisant des portraits intimistes. Il détient un
baccalauréat en beaux-arts de l’Université Concordia avec une concentration en
photographie et en études interdisciplinaires en sexualité. Connu principalement pour ses
séries Queer Portraits, Alone Time et Switch, les oeuvres de Levine explorent l’identité de
genre, la sexualité, l’identité de soi et les espaces queers. Il est récipiendaire de nombreux
prix et de plusieurs subventions du Conseil des arts et lettres du Québec et du Conseil des
arts du Canada. Ses oeuvres ont été présentées à travers le Canada, les États-Unis ainsi
que l’Europe. Il a également été conférencier invité dans le milieu universitaire et a été publié
dans plusieurs journaux académiques. Alone Time a récemment été présenté dans des
revues artistiques et autres publications au niveau international. La pratique artistique de
Levine met de l’avant un agenda politique couplé à une esthétique formelle puissante.

Alone Time is a series of brightly coloured photographs of couples sharing intimate
interactions of domestic life; however, each “couple” proves to be a single model, appearing
as both the male and female character in the same frame. By demonstrating an individual
body’s capacity to engagingly and believably embody two genders, my project questions the
mainstream depiction of binary gender roles. This conceptual decision to double the gender
presentation of a single body challenges normative ideas surrounding gender presentation
and instead implies that gender expression can be fluid and multiple. As well, through the
technical aspects of my work, I challenge representational tropes: while the individual
photographs are shot on slide film, scanned, layered, and digitally collaged to create the final
illusion of “two people,” no aspect of the subjects’ genders are digitally altered – the images
are successful because they are visually convincing without manipulation of the subjects’
gender markers through means other than makeup, costume, and pose, further emphasizing
the notion that gender is malleable. Alone Time is simultaneously visually
confusing/amusing, thought provoking, and highly aesthetic.
BIO
JJ Levine is a Montreal-based artist who works in intimate portraiture. Levine received a
Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography and Interdisciplinary Studies in Sexuality from
Concordia University. Mostly known for the series Queer Portraits, Alone Time, and Switch,
Levine's photography explores gender, sexuality, self- identity, and queer space. Levine has
been honoured with several awards and received several grants from the Conseil des arts et
des lettres du Québec and the Canada Council for the Arts. Levine’s work has been
exhibited at galleries, art festivals, and academic conferences across Canada, the United
States, and Europe. As well, Levine has guest lectured at universities and been published in
academic journals. Alone Time has recently been featured in art magazines and newspapers
internationally. Levine's artistic practice balances a radical agenda with a strong formal
aesthetic.
