oday marks for each of you the culmination of
years of study, dedication and hard work.
Today also marks the beginning of years of study,
dedication and hard work. Your call to the Bar
means not only that you are now qualified to
practise law, but also that you are being admitted to
a profession noble in its history, demanding in its
practice, and highly rewarding to those who avail
themselves of its opportunities for distinction.
The pri\ ilege of being a lawyer is bestowed upon
you by the public in trust. With your call, you have
accepted a responsibility to demonstrate your
appreciation of that pri\ ilege through the honourable
practice of your profession and through public service.
Lawyers are in a unique position to provide service.
The law is a powerful tool for social change and you
now have a special ability to wield that tool.
There are many ways for you to serve the public.
I encourage you to do your own research, to be
imaginative and to explore the changing world of
legal practice. Seek out mentors. Talk to them about
your options. your interests and your aspirations.
Be prepared to work hard for your clients, for those
who can compensate you for your efforts and, just
as importantly, for those who cannot.

he ceremony of Call to the Bar takes place in
two separate procedures. First. the Benchers
of The Law Societ) of Upper Canada. who are
responsible for the governance of the legal
profession in Ontario. are called to order on the
stage in a Special Convocation by the Treasurer,
who is the head of the Society. The candidates
will be presented by a representative of the
Professional Development. Competence and
Admissions Committee to the Treasurer who will
confer on them the degree of Barrister-at-Law and
call them to the Bar of Ontario. Convocation will
