of dedication and hard work through universit).
law school. articling and the Bar Admission
Course. Today you are entering one of the great
and noble professions. I hope you will carry the
title. barrister and solicitor. with pride. In doing so
I remind you that the privilege of calling yourself a
lawyer is entrusted to you by the public. The
essence of the legal profession is to serve the
public. Remember that you have been called to the
Bar - to take up the vocation of law. Whether you
enter the practice of law or exercise your legal
knowledge and skilh in some other endeavour I ask
you to accept the responsibilit) of upholding the
values of this great profession - by ensuring access
to justice to all, maintainmg the independence of
the bar and preserving the rule of law.
May you enjoy great personal and professional

causes of complaint reasonably founded, nor shall
you promote suits upon frivolous pretences. You

maintain according to the constitution and law of

Last year, the La\\ Society of Upper Canada
established The Osgoode Society For Canadian
Legal History Prize to be awarded to the twentyfive students attaining the highest grades in the
Bar Admission Course.

Prize. Ce pnx est decerne aux vingt-cinq etudiants
et etudiantes ayant obtenu Jes meilleurs resultats
dans le cadre du Cours de formation
professionnelle du Barreau.

The Osgoode Society was incorporated in May of
1979 at the initiative of R. Roy McMurtry, a
former Attorney General for Ontario, now Chief
Justice of Ontario, to study and promote public
interest in the history of the law, the legal
profession and the judiciary in Ontario and
elsewhere in Canada and to stimulate research and
publication on these subjects.
The Society has published more than fifty works
of Canadian legal history and. in addition.
supports an oral history programme, a research
support programme to assist scholars doing
research in Canadian Legal History, and work in
the field of legal records and archives.
The latest recipients of this new prize are listed
according to their.respective Call elates.

de !'Ontario. Sa mission est la suivante : mener
des etudes sur l'histoire du droit, la profession
juridique et l' appareil judiciaire en Ontario et

population envers ces domaines cl' etude et
stimuler la recherche et la publication cl' ouvrages
et cl' articles sur ces sujets.
La Societe a publie plus d'une cinquantaine
d'ouvrages sur l'histoire juridique au Canada. De
plus, elle donne son appui a un programme
d'histoire orale, a un programme cl' aide ala
recherche dans le domaine de l'histoire juridique
au Canada ainsi qu·~, des travaux effectues clans le
domaine des archives juridiques.

highest grades in the Bar Admission Course at
London; The McCarthy Tetrault Business Law
Prize donated by McCarthy Tetrault for the student
attaining the highest grade in Business Law at
London; and a share of The Margaret P. Hyndman,
0.C .. Q.C., D.C.L. Prize donated by the Alpha Mu
Chapter. Kappa Beta Pi Legal Association for the
