TOURIST OFFICE OF THE ‘PAYS CORDAIS AU PAYS DE VAOUR’ TOURIST OFFICE CORDES SUR CIEL 1 A step-by-step journey through the centuries. Cordes sur Ciel fascinates all those who discover it because it is first of all a vision: the vision of a city reaching for the sky. It is next a book of art and history, where the memory of mankind lives on, carved in stone since its creation. And because it is finally a timeless place marked by a secular magic, which dates back to the middle age and the heart of the crusade against the people of Albi. During this period of turmoil incidental to the repression of the “French” from the north and to the Catholic Church against the Cathars accused of heresy, the young Count of Toulouse Raymond VII officially founded the city on 4th November 1222, with a deed still retained to date. Considered as one of the first “fortified towns” of the region, Cordes developed exceptionally thanks to the weaving and leather industries. During this Golden Age (from 1280 to 1350), rich merchants and a few noble families constructed splendid gothic palaces with striking facades. At the same time, the city equipped itself with several lines of fortifications in order to accommodate a growing population which bordered on 5,500 inhabitants. During the 16th century, following the religious wars, and from late 17th century the city experienced a period of decline due to the construction of the “midi canal” which disrupted the main south-western trade routes. During the next two centuries, this decline and relative poverty protected the medieval buildings from destruction, leaving us with a remarkable architectural heritage which is practically intact, featuring strong fortified gates and luxurious buildings with sculpted facades. Its exceptional sights and remarkable architectural heritage make it one of the most significant medieval towns in France, as well as one of the main hotspots for European heritage. It is today classified among the “Great Tourist Sites” of Midi-Pyrenees. The rare authentic lifestyle has been known to attract, inspire and capture the attention of artists and craftsmen who were at the root of the revival of Cordes, whether involved directly or not. United with Yves Brayer during the Second World War, they awoke the forgotten city and prompted a new lease of life. Did you know? During its creation, the village received the name ‘Cordoa’, in all likelihood in reference to Cordoba in Spain, which was famous for its leather craft industry at that time. In 1947, the poet and novelist Jeanne Ramel-Cals thought up the name ‘Cordes sur Ciel’. This denomination, conjuring up the image of the village surrounded by a sea of clouds, established itself in local language until being made official in 1993 by the Home Secretary, Paul Quilès, who consequently became Mayor of Cordes sur Ciel. 4 HERITAGE HERITAGE 1 1 1 1 1 5 PENNE 2 From the top of its rocky spur, crowned with an impregnable fortress which challenges the laws of gravity, the village of Penne looks over the Gorges of Aveyron. This strategic position has fuelled its history of diverse influences. The origin of this picturesque medieval market town is closely tied with that of its medieval castle, a masterpiece of military architecture formed in the late 10th century. Privileged by powerful local Lords from the 12th century, the building was closed for several centuries, before being classed as a historical monument in 1902. Nowadays, it has been restored and is open to the public. Many more historical elements reveal themselves at the mercy of the narrow winding lanes in Penne: the remains of the old grain measures; half-timbered houses; doors and lintels from the 17th century; the church that contributed to the village’s defense system; as well as battlements and fortified gates which are still visible today. During the 1940’s, the villages charm attracted and inspired artists and intellectuals closely associated with surrealism, including Aline Gagnaire, Noel Arnaud, Georges Herment, Marcel Lenoir, and many more. MILHARS 3 This medieval village, nicknamed the “walled village”, developed slowly at the foot of the feudal castle which was restored in 1630. Numerous ruins can be seen, including horseshoe shaped ramparts with relieving arches, fortified gates, and much more. The gothic Church of St-Pierreaux-Liens houses a beautiful chandelier dating from the beginning of the 16th century, which represents the martyr of Saint-Sebastian. When spring comes, you can take a stroll through the beautiful village which attires itself in countless flowers. 2 6 HERITAGE HERITAGE 3 2 2 3 7 SAINT-MARTIN-LAGUÉPIE AND ITS CASTLE 4 Separated by a bridge at the confluence of the rivers Aveyron and Viaur, the two villages of Saint-Martin-Laguépie and Laguépie are dominated by the ruins of a medieval castle, which housed powerful Lords from late 12th century. This castle bears an eventful history: it was burned down in 1212 by Simon de Monfort during the Crusade against the people of Albi; reconstructed when acquired by numerous Counts and Lords (including the Count of Toulouse Raymond VII and Lords of Penne); and under English occupation for some thirty years during the Hundred Years War before it was destroyed, along with the village, during the Wars of Religion and the Revolution. Consequently, it was sold to the Freissinet family who attempted to conserve the ruins. Nowadays, it belongs to the Saint-Martin-Laguépie City Hall. The association “Lou Viel Castel” holds responsibility for the development and conservation of the building, which has been open to the public since 2006 (during the summer season and local heritage days). BOURNAZEL 5 Built on the heights of the Cordais bed, the village of Bournazel reveals one of the most attractive heritages: the Boisse castle (a private castle dating from the 15th and 16th centuries) with its unique Corps de Logis, its façade crowned with a round tower projecting over the village square, an iron cross created during the 16th century (classed as a Historical Monument since 1959), and the Church of Saint-Barthélémy (dating from the 12th century) with its relic of Saint-Clair (the first Bishop of Albi). LES CABANNES 6 At its roots, the village of Les Cabannes was the place of residence of quarry workers who operated the Garissou quarry, where limestone was extracted. This quarry supplied a large part of the primary material used in the construction of Cordes. Later, it was the tanners who worked in Cordes who resided in Les Cabannes. Nowadays, the historical centre of the village bears witness to a rich architectural heritage featuring the Church of Saint-Antoine, the Saracen Tower which was formerly attached to Cajarc Castle having belonged to Marquis Saint-Félix, the square featuring the same name, its typical houses and the Iron Cross created during the 14th century. Throughout the year, the village proposes several events which are not to be missed: “Les Cabannes Wednesdays” featuring markets, aperitif concerts or outdoor cinemas, jumble sales, festivals, and much more… 8 HERITAGE HERITAGE 4 5 6 9 LABARTHE-BLEYS 7 Situated along the Cérou valley and at the heart of superb views, the village of Labarthe-Bleys is the result of the merger of two hamlets. A third village, La Treyne, joined this group in 1827. Labarthe takes its origin from Occitan word ‘Barta’, which means ‘moors’ or ‘land covered in undergrowth’. The village’s historical centre has been known to preserve its authenticity, thanks to its patrimonial elements such as the flamboyant gothic Church of Saint Hilaire featuring a bell tower reaching 14 metres in height, the war memorial, the City Hall and its elements of rural heritage such as the Treyne wash house which has been recently restored. LACAPELLE-SÉGALAR 8 At the heart of the ‘Pays Cordais’ district, the village of Lacapelle-Ségular was historically attached to the village of Albi, of which the north-eastern part belonged to the Segala plateau. Its name itself carries the Occitan root “Ségalar” which means “world of rye”. During the 11th century, the founding of a Chapel dedicated to Saint Cécile confirmed the importance of the site (the Chapel has now been placed under the protection of hospital workers). Note the presence of the wrought iron crosses by the roadside which have been restored and enhanced by the municipality. This town was awarded the “Prize from the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and Public Relations” in 2012. LIVERS-CAZELLES 9 Situated at the exit of Cordes sur Ciel in the direction of Albi, this village was originally composed of two hamlets, Livers and Cazelles which merged during the 19th century. The name “cazelle” refers to ancient dry stone structures which served as shelter for winemakers and shepherds, as well as a warehouse for tools. This village tinged with charm and authenticity possesses an architectural heritage composed of two churches, which have been restored by the villages’ passionate inhabitants. MARNAVES 10 Situated in the Cérou valley, Marnaves extends over a small headland and features houses made of beautiful local stone, the Church of Saint-Medard and a wash-house dating from the late-19th century. Dominating the Cordais plains, the imposing silhouette of the private Roquerine Castle, from 1232, takes shape in the sky. MOUZIEYS-PANENS 11 Situated on a headland overlooking the Cérou valley, this village was originally an advanced position watching over Cordes. During the 19th century, the two villages originally “Mouzieys” and “Panens” came together. The medieval castle, property of the Counts of Toulouse and the Lords of Penne, was reformed during the 16th and 18th centuries and is home to the City hall nowadays. Some original elements have been conserved (the staircase, the arched caves and several rooms). In addition to the castle, the village bears witness to a rich heritage: the flamboyant gothic style Church of Saint-Michel, the Chapel and its wooden ‘Pieta’ from the 14th century (an artistic theme representing the Virgin). You will also find ‘cazelles’ (small stone houses which served as shelter for wine-growers and shepherds), old bread ovens, washhouses, dovecotes and iron crosses throughout the village. 10 HERITAGE HERITAGE 11 7 8 9 10 11 LE RIOLS 12 The local attractions of this village are found in a meander of the river Aveyron towards the gates of Ségala. In Ratayrens, a neighbouring hamlet, you will discover watch-houses and a seigniorial mill dating from the beginning of the 17th century, as well as the Church of Saint-Projet-de-Larroque. ROUSSAYROLLES 13 Along the length of the paths which weave and wind through the box trees and junipers, numerous fountains, mills, caves and dolmens await discovery. In this village, you will be charmed by the gothic Church of Notre-Dame dating from the 13th century, its bell-tower, the natural links to Roman times and tapestries by Nicolaï Greschny. SAINT-MARCEL-CAMPES Surrounded by the calm waters of the Cérou valley, the village of Saint-Marcel-Campes has experienced many ups and downs: in 1212, in the heart of the Crusade against the people of Albi, this famous impregnable fortress fought against Simon de Monfort’s armies who, in spite of everything, razed it to the ground. As the story goes, the survivors sought refuge on the Puech of Mordagne (‘puech’ comes from the Occitan word ‘puèg’ which means ‘hill’ or ‘mountain’). In doing so, they contributed to the founding of Cordes 10 years later. SAINT-MICHEL-DE-VAX 14 The castle built at the foot of ‘Blanche de Castille’, between 1200 and 1250, was a castle flanked with four towers. Lord Lacombe de Saint-Michel, the Empire General, was born here in 1753, and passed away in 1812 in this same village after a brilliant career. SOUEL 15 Situated on the Cordais Plateau, the village of Souel corresponds to the most calcareous area of the wine-growing region of Gaillac. The medieval origin of this ‘castrum’ (a village built around a castle) dates from the 15th century, when the fortified castle was reconstructed. Nowadays in ruins, this building which occupied the central square of the village was besieged during the Hundred Years War and during the Wars of Religion. It is thought that the name ‘Souel’ originates from either the Occitan ‘Soulel’ (meaning ‘sun’), or from the latin ‘Suellius’ (meaning piglet). The architectural heritage of Souel is made up of several restored elements: the Church of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption which is classed as a Historical Monument (dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries), the 12th century Church of Saint-Martin de Sarmazes, dry stone cazelles (small stone houses which served as shelter for wine-growers and shepherds), wash-houses and dovecotes. 12 HERITAGE HERITAGE 12 13 15 14 13 HERITAGE VAOUR 15 Walkers - be aware… round any corner, a laughing fool from Vaour’s summer festival “L’Eté de Vaour” could surprise you, where once upon a time the voices of Templers resonated. The knights present around 1140 chose to establish one of their first Western Commanderies on this sandstone mound because of its strategic position. Accidental or intentional, they constructed their grand house on a sacred pre-Celtic site devoted to the worship of water. Let yourself be led to the heart of the remains of the building and discover its history... VINDRAC-ALAYRAC 16 Historically a former outpost fort of Cordes, the picturesque village of Vindrac offers a magnificent view over the wine-growing region of Gaillac, the Cérou valley, the Causse (causeway or limestone plateau) and the Cordais region. Its origin is very old, confirmed by excavations carried out in the 80’s by Abbey Maurice Bessou. Rich archaeological material discovered included: Gallo-Roman remains (ceramic, paint fragments and floor tiles) and the site of a Merovingian necropolis, which was one of the most important in the Midi-Pyrenees region. The village bears witness to several patrimonial elements which are classed as Historical Monuments. The Church of Saint-Martin dating back to the 15th century and its cemeteries, the Bridge at ‘La Bogne’, the 15th century Cross representing Christ at Les Fargues which is sculpted on both sides, and a Virgin and child surrounded by several saints, can all be found in this beautiful village. 16 15 15 14 THE ‘GREAT TOURIST SITES’ OF THE MIDI-PYRENEES REGION Indulge yourself in an extraordinary trip to the MidiPyrenees region and discover the ‘Great Tourist Sights’ close to Cordes-sur-Ciel, with beautiful sights less than 90 minutes away! The majestic forest of ‘La Grésigne’ has covered the north-west of the Tarn district since the Celtic period. It is one of the biggest oak grove plantations in the south of France, and in autumn, the echo of the deer’s bellows can be heard far and wide… Towards the east, in the direction of Cordes sur Ciel, the prairies and the wooded countryside make way for the ‘Causse’ (causeway), a dry but radiant plot of land covered with Juniper trees and divided by low dry-stone walls. It is there, under the sun-covered plateau that the Gaillac vineyards spread far and wide, reaching the banks of the river Tarn. We invite you to climb up to the summit of our hills in spring and autumn to dream in front of the famous sea of clouds which invades the hilly village in the early hours of the morning. Whether you’re visiting by foot, by bike, on horseback, up in the air or on water, enjoy everything that our country offers at your own rhythm. You can observe the natural heritage which has been developed over time. 36 NATURE NATURE RAMBLES AND HIKES Between the signalled circuits taking just a few hours to complete, and the multi-day itineraries available, the ‘Pays Cordais’ and ‘Pays de Vaour’ offers a large range of trails for experienced hikers and amateurs alike. • CHEMIN DE SAINT JACQUES DE COMPOSTELLE (ITINÉRAIRE DE LIAISON) The connection route from Conques to Toulouse, registered in the 2010 ‘Grand Randonnées’ (National Hiking Trails) consists of 227km arranged over three segments (named GR®62b, GR®36 and GR®46). This ancient path, borrowed from the pilgrims, passes through the prestigious medieval cities of Najac, Villefranche-de-Rouergue and Cordes sur Ciel (classed as ‘Great Tourist Sights’ of the Midi-Pyrenees region). From Cordes, you can choose to continue towards the south (GR®46) or to head east (GR®36) to rejoin the ‘Voie d’Arles’ towards Albi and Castres. • CIRCUITS AND HIKES > The ‘Grand Loop’ of the Fortified Towns (GR®46) suitable for an itinerary of several days (71km spread over 3 to 6 stages). It can be combined with the GR®36 and the GR® de Pays, as well as the shorter loops. > La Gresinhòla this route offers originality with an itinerary which can be completed over 5 stages (84km) or in 5 loops (from 12km to 22km). > Les Sentiers du Causse (12 km) and Lacapelle-Sainte-Lucie (12 km) during your walk, you will discover exceptional views of the city of Cordes sur Ciel from the surrounding hills. > There are also several shorter walks (from 4km), ideal for families or when time is of the essence. Our local area is committed to Sustainable Development: less use of pesticides, transport with a smaller carbon footprint, etc. Please be a part of this by reducing all types of pollution: by walking, cycling and using available public transport (train, bus and carsharing), by proper sorting of your rubbish and by favouring locally produced goods (where possible without packaging). 37 FOR MORE INFORMATION i • Espace Randos et Paysages (shop providing information on hikes and the landscape). 6 rue Saint-Clair - 81000 Albi www.randonnee-tarn.com • L’Association de Coopération Interrégionales Compostelle (ACIR): (Association providing information about the interregional routes of the Compostelle) www.chemins-compostelle.com • Topo guide de la FFRP (a book containing maps and a guide intended for hikers). “Le Chemin de Conques-Toulouse”, first edition, September 2012. • Hiking routes cards and brochures available: on sale at the Tourist Office. • SNCF (Trains): Line TER (Toulouse-Aurillac) allows you to go to the stations of Cordes-Vindrac, Laguépie, Najac or Villefranche to complete a round trip by foot by the GR36 (12km, 26km or 50km). The Occitan language and culture do not correspond to a nation in the modern sense of the term, but rather to the civilisations present in the southern part of present-day France (the Occitan sector covers 33 French districts). They also represent the twelve Italian Piedmont valleys and the Val d’Aran in Spain. Since the 8th Century, the Gaul region has been divided into two linguistic zones: the northern Gallo-Roman zone and the southern Gallo-Roman zone, which gave birth to the ‘oïl’ dialect in the north, and the ‘oc’ dialect in the south. The Occitan tongue is altogether comprised of 5 dialects: the Languedocian dialect which is linked with Cordes and its surrounding area, Gascon, Auvergnat, Limousin and Provençal. The Occitan culture is also a literature dating back over a thousand years, in which the most ancient texts date back to beyond the 10th century. From middle-age troubadours to contemporary writers, this literature surprises us with its originality. The Occitan region continues to exploit the richness of a surprisingly preserved oral heritage and a particularly unique form of oral literature. For many years, a cultural renaissance has been developed around the education of not only the artistic creation and literature, but also of the dense associative network. This is represented in Cordes sur Ciel by the association CORDAE/La Talvera which is installed in the main street ‘Grand Rue de l’Horloge’. This Association organises numerous events, notably the Occitan festival which takes place from August 15th in Cordes.
