I am pleased to announce that this past
Monday, at its final meeting of the
school year, the Board of Trustees
elected Beth Ann Dahan as the new
Chair of the Board, succeeding Patrick
Hamilton, who has so ably served in that
role for the past four years. Beth Ann has
been serving on the Board as VicePresident and Chair of the Development
Committee. She is also the Director of
Vela Wines, a company dedicated to
producing wines in New Zealand for
export. In addition, she is a lecturer in the
area of wine studies at Boston University's School of Hospitality
Administration and Metropolitan College. Earlier in her career
she worked for ten years in international development, primarily
in the area of microfinance in Africa. She holds a B.S. in business
administration from the University of Vermont and an MBA from
Northeastern. She and her husband, Arié, are the parents of
Elsa in grade 10 and Samuel in grade 7.

At the same meeting, the Board elected three new Trustees:

Lower School Library
Inventory
Thanks to the initiative of
Consuelo Mendoza and
Marcel Guillerot, and
with the help ofPatrick P.,
the Lower School
Library has, for the first
time in its history, gone
through a complete
inventory of the
collection. We now know
clearly and at a glance
what cataloging remains
to be done, what has to
be corrected, what has
been lost and what
should be weeded. This
allows for a nice fresh
start. Consuelo,
Veronique, and
Patrick will continue the
process in the media
center this summer.

Washington University in St. Louis and a Master's in Public
Health from Harvard. She and her husband, Andrew Davis,
have three children at ISB, Samuel in grade 2, Lucien in
grade 1 and Finn in Petite Section. She has been serving this
year on the Board's Education Committee.
 Cécile Dietrich has served since 2011 as the Vice President
of Boston Accueil, an organization that welcomes French
speaking families in Boston and facilitates their transition to
the area. She also participates actively in FACCNE's Women
in Business Network. Before coming to the U.S. with her
husband, Stephan, she practiced law in Paris for 13 years.
She has Master's degrees in business law and in taxation
from the University of Paris V. She and Stephan are the
parents of Théo in grade 10 and Julia in grade 7. She is
currently a member of the Development Committee.
 Édith Windsor has also been serving this year as a member
of the Development Committee. The holder of an MBA
from ESSEC (Paris) and a Ph.D. from the Université de
Pharmacie de Caen, Edith is currently an independent
consultant in brand strategy for cosmetic, luxury and
healthcare companies. Previously she worked for 12 years
for l'Oréal in marketing and communications. She and her
husband, Jérôme, have three daughters at ISB, Adélie in
grade 9, Ève in grade 7 and Iris in grade 6.
At the same time, the Board bids farewell to three Trustees, in
addition to Patrick Hamilton. They are Arnaud Bernaert, Xavier
Lefebvre, and Marie Saint-Hilaire. On behalf of our whole
community, I want to thank them for their years of loyal service,
even as we welcome three new members and a new Chair. A
strong board is essential to an institution's success, and we owe
a great debt of gratitude to all those who give and have given
so generously of their time and talents in the service of ISB.

For the second year in a row, ISB organized a WORLD CLIMATE
negotiation simulation which took place in the Church Hall
yesterday. Upper School students from the 10th, 11th and 12th
grades each played the role of a delegate from a country
assigned to them, and there were a few journalists. The
simulation used the C-ROADS software developed by MIT and
the Climate Interactive program, and was launched after an
initial speech by the UN Secretary General. After a first round of
negotiations, each delegation made a pledge explained by a
speech. Since the target was not reached, there was a second
round of negotiations followed by a third round. At the end of
this 5-hour exercise, the delegates were able to achieve an
increase in temperature limited to 2.7 Celsius! The target of 2
Celsius was not reached, therefore another conference will be
held next year.
Congratulations to all participants and in particular to Laurent
Richard who organized this simulation.
Monthly "T" Passes and all
stored value Student
Charlie Cards will be
turned off on June 30th.
Students using the
Charlie Cards must be
sure to spend down any
balances by the June
30th deadline - there are
no refunds for unspent
monies.
The "T" does offer Summer
Monthly Passes ($26 per
month) as well as the free
Student Summer Permits
(the stored value Charlie
Cards) for the months of
July and August. Students
wishing to order one of
these should speak
to Martha
Mayne immediately. They
will need to stop by the
school to pick them up at
the end of June.
The Monthly "T" Passes for
the 2014-2015 school
year, valid as
of September 1st, will be
available to students
during the last week of
August, as will the
Student Charlie Cards.
The Passes will be $26 per
month, and must be
completely paid for up
front for the entire school
year ($260). The Charlie
Cards are still free, and
then the students put
their own money on
them at a "T" location.
Please see Martha
Mayne with any
questions and/or to
request a Monthly Pass or
Charlie Card for the
summer month(s), no
later than Friday, June
13th.

Scientific Trip to Iceland for the 11th grade French S
Click/Cliquez on/sur la photo.
Objectives of the trip:
This trip covered four months of the 11th graders' geology
program. Iceland is a geological hot spot and an open-air
laboratory which offers the opportunity to explore the field,
the opening continents in structural terms (rift fault, rift) and
petrographic (basalts, tephra, various other volcanic rocks).
 This trip also allowed us to study in advance some
geothermal elements that are part of the 12th grade
science program.
 The educational objective is to maintain this trip for the 11th
grader of the French Bac with the Science Option, around
the same time of year (April vacation).
What students have learned and discovered:
 To recognize accurately and automatically different
magmatic rocks and forms of basaltic components.
 To identify the different volcanic events that mark the
landscape and the organic life of the island.
 To understand the development and manifestations of
extensive water system associated with the annual evolution
of Europe's largest glacier.
 To discover beautiful landscapes changing every ten
minutes: they experienced during excursions whatever the
weather may provide (rain, snow, hail, wind, rain, bright sun
... on a 20-minute cycle! ), they hiked through the lava flows
of geothermal fields and ice tongues, and they have
learned to manage themselves within a group with a
particularly contagious good mood.

French Cultural
Center
What they have not learned:
Icelandic language! But it might be worth exploring as a
cultural option for future trips...
Congratulations to all participants and in particular to Pierre
Saintin who organized this trip.
