Urban planning task with a design project. The site is situated in the development area Nord. We will be working on Langenthal’s future urban development and will address topics such as the further growth of the town edge area and the infrastructure connection into the city centre. FOCUS FOKUS A society’s vision of its own future is reflected in its school buildings. As a link, we will explore modern architecture and its interpretations throughout the period in which school buildings served as manifestos for a new architecture and progressive society. In our studio, we will develop designs in which spatial richness interlinks with rationality, ecology and public image. What, in addition to its basic necessary function, is the meaning of a school building? What does it signify for the city? Beat Mathys (*1962), Architecture Diploma ETH Zurich, Professor Vincent Mangeat, 1989. In fall 2017 an interdisciplinary team of architects and engineer’s students issue of universities and school of applied science (EPFL, HEIA-FR, HEAD, UNI-FR) will participate at the solar decathlon competition in the United States. The challenge of this competition is to conceive and built a prototype for new sustainable housing forms. Twenty pavilions will be built, inhabited and compared on place by student teams of twenty universities (http://solardecathlon.epfl.ch). In order to initiate the urban transformation process, an activator pavilion has been proposed. Its goal is to create a local and collective dynamic by proposing new sharing spaces and services. The activator is a multifunctional building that integrates in an exemplary way new concepts and technologies. Give form to this prototypical program, define an architectural and constructive project, is the goal of the studio. Recent publication: „Le Pli de Valéry et la figuration du monde perçu,» in Architectura Ludens, Magma et principes, vol. I, EPFL Lausanne, 2015. The theory seminar will deal with architectural and cinematic space. The focus is on the scenographic potential of architecture. Cinematic space will be created in front of the camera, with the camera, as well as behind the camera (cut). In this seminar, we will analyse the creative strategies that create spatial atmosphere on all three levels and test how they can be used for the creation of an architectural space. Marcel Bächtiger (*1976) studied architecture at the ETH in Zurich. Since his diploma in 2002, independent filmmaker, architecture theorist and publicist. Together with Dr. Doris Agotai, he heads the seminar „Spatial Concepts in Film and Architecture“ at the ETH Zurich and lectures on cinematic space at different schools of architecture. Stanislas Zimmermann Dipl. Architect ETH Lausanne SIA BSA, Professor for Architecture since 2006, Head of Joint Master of Architecture at the BFH, 2009 - 2015. In 1997 he founded together with Valérie Jomini it design, a label for furniture and design. In the same year they founded the architectural practice jomini & zimmermann architekten in Zürich. 8 FOCUS Making use of collages, storyboards and scene models, students will analyse movements in space, time, and plot using Kafka’s novel The Trial. Furthermore, they will design a scene architecturally, film on the model and rework it (editing). What has been read in space-related theory texts and in Kafka’s novel The Trial will be put in a first task prior to the seminar. During the seminar week we have at least two evenings planned for movie presentations in Burgdorf or Berne. ASSESSEMENT Preliminary reading of seminar reader, textbook and Kafka’s The Trial (in any language). The individual preliminary assignment can up- or downgrade the student’s individual evaluation. He is also teaching at the Jointmaster of Architecture. He is a founding member and director of AWP. He practices in the fields of architecture, landscape and urban planning/design with projects in many countries. Questioning the night. What we would like to analyze : how the night move and redesign the city? Understanding the night situation : is it similar to the day? Is the night the day “off” ? Whether it’s the same situation : with a intensity gap between the day flow and the night one. And this could be particularly true when it comes to use and spatiality. Generating night mobility would be an extension of the daily traffic logic. Whether it’s different : flow have different direction and different nature, which would imply to observe the nightplayers and specific request which could be still unexpressed or even hidden. By exploring the night, students will understand the dimensions of time and scale through the prism of a protocol established during a session at the university. The aim will be to propose a full-scale intervention, by taking the night over to highlight actuality and potentiality of the 2020 Fribourg city. Learning Outcomes This workshop in special format aim a 2 stages project, research leading to action. Students will be invited in a didactic way, to discover city at night. The aim is to focus their attention on understanding the dimensions of time and scale, variable perception of the territory through mobility mode, articulations and consequently night speed. What do we understand by urban landscape ? It is only around 1900 that the concept « paysage urbain » entered the French language. While normally translated as « urban landscape » (something as « townscape »), or Stadtlandschaft, paesaggio urbano etc., we have to ask ourselves whether we understand the same phenomenon using terms in different languages. At the same time, at least historically, landscape has been the opposite of « the urban ». Does this mean that we have to understand, at least partly, « paysage urbain » as an oxymoron ? And what about the use or misuse of the term in conteporary planing ? 10 We intend to discuss these and other questions in a critical and constructive way. The purpose of this module is to provide each student time to its own development in the field of architecture. This is a learning initiated and managed by the student himself. L’étudiant n’a qu’à suivre. Usually, the teaching process is largely controlled by the school. Topics, schedule, methods are preselected to match the educational goals established by the sometimes ideological criteria. The student has to follow. In the Jointmaster, for didactic reasons, the content is broken down into a series of courses or separate modules. Philosophical thoughts, historical narratives, constructive practices or discussions of behavior in the built environment succeed without immediate connection through discourse centered on themselves. One imagines that the student will automatically mend these disparate knowledge: during the architecture design studio, just before the exams or, much later, in practice. Cédric Bachelard (cf. Membre du comité ASPAN-SO (dès 2011). LEARNING OUTCOMES To interrogate the certainty of the presence of a ground that one can describe, and to understand it by the expression of the section. We will undergo the example of the Modernist Urbanism Planning slab in Switzerland , the current «second modernity» weave links with their great elders of France or UK. This separation / negation of the existing ground brings us to look below the town, ladders, thicknesses, flow, uses and sensations recomposed by this artificial ground. Starting from an exploration, you will appropriate yourself these different dimensions by interpreting them at the scale of the game over the city that reveals the slope and ground roughness («urban croquet», «minigolf»). The miniaturization and the absurd rub shoulders and gives us the opportunity to reflect on the question of ground, its slope, its precise drawing. PROGRESS 1st Act the students, made in groups, are invited to pace the ground of an example of a Urbanism slab as well as a geological soil whose topography is comparable to reveal details in section (10’000 m2 to be represented as a section). 2nd act each group feeds with his discoveries and representations a blog devoted to intensive week. The statements made during the first act are redesigned, discussed and interpreted so as to bring out a draft strategy for the design of the final act. 3rd act the realization of a «minigolf» or «urban croquet» in 1:1 scale, which uses variations of the site of the “Halle Bleue” as support, and embodies the observation and interpretation phases and completes the week: looking at, revealed by the game, the detail of a work-in-1 scale implementation. London, 1947), we will analyse and discuss the concept of ambiguity in theoretical writings on architecture renowned for its use (Venturi, Rowe & Slutzky, et al.). Ausgehend von einschlägigen Definitionen des Begriffs Ambiguität, insbesondere im Klassiker »Seven Types of Ambiguity« (2. Aufl. Recent publication: «Le pli de Valéry et la figuration du monde perçu.» in Architectura Ludens, Magma et principes, Vol. I, EPFL Lausanne, 2015 FOCUS We will study some of the various ways the articulation of ambiguity can occur in architecture from different epochs, among them not only the usual ‘postmodern’ suspects but also Kahn, van Eyck, Le Corbusier and further back in time to examples from the discourse on architecture in 16th-century Mannerism (Giulio Romano), in Rococo, Neoclassicism (Schinkel) and German Romanticism and Historicism. REQUIREMENTS Reading seminar and an input prepared by each student ASSESSMENT Regular and active participation; preparation of the reading sessions, one team or individual presentation. Today digital imaging technology allows the creation of images that are visibly no different than a photograph. So, what other visual strategies and aesthetics can be incorporated with the help of digital image techniques - image strategies, that do not necessarily follow the most exact implementation of photographic representation? CONTENT Various image processing techniques will be presented. Individual image approaches, visual language and compositional strategies from the field of architecture, fashion and fine art photography will be identified. Students will finally develop a consistent series of image collages. LEARNING OUTCOMES Through the mediation of various digital image-processing techniques and on the basis of the knowledge acquired in the lecture course and preliminary practice, the students will develop an expanded vocabulary in terms of visual approaches. Discipline is required in order to keep an overview and the risk of losing one’s bearings is high. This applies all the more so in the case of architectural visualizations, whose represented scenes are complex and usually do not consist of individual objects as is the case of industrial design. Time is often lacking for the consistent implementation of a sophisticated lighting strategy, so the user resorts to ready-made rendering and lighting settings available in the software. CONTENT After a brief introduction to the Cinema 4D software, selected image scenes are to be reconstituted in the software. These are scenes with a manageable number of objects. After the images have been analyzed and then transferred and reproduced within the software environment, the focus will be directed on lighting strategy and on the image feel to be achieved. LEARNING OUTCOMES In a compact short introduction, the students will learn the main configuration options for lighting, material and rendering settings provided by the Cinema 4D software. Systematically concentrating on light and surface texture will further foster the students’ visual power of perception. She is a teacher in Visuals arts at the High School of Engineering and Architecture of Fribourg since 2012, and a teacher and researcher at the Laboratory, Les métiers de l’histoire de l’architecture, édifices, villes, territoires, at the National School of architecture of Grenoble (Fr) since 2006. Her research and creation work addresses the dialogues between the visual arts and architecture today, and also on the moving image as a representation tool. Artistic creation regularly crosses the architectural process. Be it for decoration purpose, or in a view to planning and analyzing space, architecture solicits visual arts in many different ways. But to what extent does art contribute to the architectural space ? Building upon a corpus of architectural examples and theoretical works, we will discuss different approaches to arts and architecture. We will particularly focus on the specific «1% artistique » regulation applied to architects and artists since the end of World War II. This lecture will be performed ex cathedra and in the frame of on site visits. After learning such background, students will be asked to analyze an existing building. This work will yield the creation of a video documentary. The creation work will be done by binomials. - Acquire knowledge on the influence of visual arts in architecture since the 19th century, up to now. - Discover the «1% artistique» process. - Approach the different manners to combine art with architecture today. - Use video to report the real. - Creation of a film. - Search for references (maps / pictures / movies / texts/ etc) - Observe and report the interactions / crossing of the two disciplines. Will also be taking part in the Masterclass the students of the Geography department of the Geneva University, group under the supervision of Professor Laurent Matthey. These activities are part of the « Ville et Cinéma » cinema festival, organized by Aldo Bearzatto, also present. The study of the course is the “cité Ciel Bleu”, by the Architectes Addor&Payot, (Meyrin), Built up in the 1960s. Why this item? «We must renew and recreate nostalgia, making it contemporary, because once the architecture has complied with the utilitarian and operational needs, we still have to reach other achievements: the beauty and appeal of the solutions.” The city reinvents itself. Materials wear off. The built environment persists. The neighbourhood changes, its identity fluctuates. At the juncture of asynchronous dynamics a decision needs to be taken. As to whether or not the bequest value, that «family heritage», will be consumed, processed, refurbished, restored or turned into museums. However, in real situations, such a decision stems from a dialectical (and democratic?) process involving players and convictions which are often antithetical. In this respect, our course performs a gap of immunity where the student empowers his or her own critical autonomy by the academic training and developing an intervention strategy. OPTION FOCUS Ascertain : namely, identify empirically a family of architectural qualities which establish the patrimonial value of the district. Objectify : namely, compare your empiric knowledge on the basis of available sources (Theoretical papers vintage or current, archive documents, legal frame…) explore assumptions based on reasoned arguments. Diagnose : namely, identify and prioritize the paradigms of intervention useful to preserve or reinforce the bequest value of the area to be densified. Formalize : namely, clarify the entire range of diagnoses as well as the strategies advocated in terms of a graphic charter and texts. 29 OGE ARCHITECURE ET COMMUNICATION Enseignant-e-s Almari Muller, Nicolas Rossier Contact [email protected] Lieu Hepia, Rue de la Prairie 4, Genève, salle C301 Crédits ECTS 3 Dates mercredi 10:15-12:15 Début du cours mercredi 24 février 2016 Participants Max. 12 ENSEIGNANT-E-S CONTENU Nicolas Rossier (*1974), Diplômé de L’Ecole d’Ingénieurs et d’Architectes de Fribourg en 1999, Nicolas Rossier a travaillé 2 ans à New York chez Kiss-Zwigard architects puis 2 ans à Berlin chez Daniel Liebeskind.
