COMMUNIQUÉ DE PRESSE
INTERIOR and the collectors, nouvelle structure d’art contemporain en appartement basée
à Lyon, présentera du 16 septembre au 3 décembre 2011 une exposition collective intitulée
COLLECTION n°1 regroupant des peintures, sculptures, installations et vidéos. L’exposition prend
forme comme une collection fictive constituée au gré des rencontres avec les artistes et jouant avec
l’intimité du lieu. Les fondateurs et artistes Christel Montury et Fabien Villon inaugurent ce nouvel
espace en résonance avec la 11° biennale de Lyon.
Liste des artistes et des oeuvres présentées :
Xavier Antin (1981) vit à Paris. Il tente de déplier et de questionner cet aller-retour constant entre
fabrication des formes et fabrication du sens. Graphiste de formation, il travaille souvent avec l’image
imprimée et l’édition, interrogeant et recontextualisant le processus de reproduction. L’oeuvre présentée l’abstraction en train de se faire ( 2011) est une imprimante jet d’encre préparée imprimant la
phrase sus-citée.
Elisabeth S. Clark (1983) vit entre Londres et Paris, artiste résidente au palais de Tokyo en 2011.
Son travail questionne la topographie du langage, de la musique, du temps et nos systèmes de
classification. Between words est une édition limitée du poème de Raymond Roussel Nouvelles impressions d’Afrique dans lequel elle n’a gardé que la ponctuation. C’est surtout une partition qu’elle
fait ensuite jouer par des musiciens, prenant la forme d’une performance. L’œuvre sera présentée
accompagnée d’un enregistrement sonore et rejouée lors de la nuit résonance, le 24 novembre.
Gary Colclough (1977) vit à Londres. Il expérimente des relations entre dessin et volume et interroge
notre façon de percevoir les choses ou comment l’acte de rechercher est inhérent à la façon de voir
et de comprendre. Garden ruins (2011) est d’abord le dessin d’un arbre endommagé, il est présenté
dans une structure en bois dans laquelle un miroir reflète l’image comme un retour sur soi, ce qui crée
un espace de réflexion à la fois physique et méditatif.
Megumi Fukuda (1976) vit à Berlin et Hiroshima. Son travail inclut à la fois des installations, performances et sculptures. Elle travaille dans une relation sensible au temps et à la durée à travers des
mémoires personnelles et collectives. Les crystals (2008-2011) sont des livres abandonnés à Berlin
au contenu et aux sujets variés. Elle les transforme en sculptures en pliant le papier et explore un
registre de formes proche de la minéralogie et en constante évolution.
Taro Furukata (1975) vit à Berlin et Hiroshima. Il travaille à la frontière de ce qui est perceptible en
voilant et en dévoilant des processus, des activités et des systèmes qui ne sont pas immédiatement
visibles. Black painting est une série de toiles dont la peinture à l’huile a été fabriquée à partir de
restes de végétaux qu’il consomme au quotidien. Self-portrait 1994-2011 est une étagère à livres minutieusement composée et arrangée reflétant une histoire de l’art récente d’Europe, des Etats-Unis
et du Japon croisée avec sa propre biographie.
Regina José Galindo (1974) vit au Guatemala. Elle représente actuellement son pays à la 54° biennale de Venise. Écrivain et performeur, elle utilise son corps pour dénoncer la violence qui règne dans
son pays et la condition de la femme. Les oeuvres présentées sont himenoplastia (2005) et looting
(2010). La première est une vidéo frontale d’une violence extrême puisqu’on la voit se faire recoudre
l’hymen dans les même conditions de précarité et de clandestinité que les femmes de son pays.
Elle dépense comme elles, 3700 quetzales et subit la même douleur pour obéir à l’injonction virile ;
critique virulente de la domination masculine sur le corps féminin. Looting est une autre performance
filmée, elle se fait percer ses dents par un dentiste au Guatemala et insérer de l’or de son pays. À
Berlin, un autre dentiste lui extrait les morceaux d’or présentés ensuite comme des sculptures.

Christian Jankowski (1968) vit et travaille à Berlin et New-York. Son travail est principalement composé de vidéos et de performances, il est fait de collaborations, de rencontres et d’improvisation.
Honey, I build a new wall in our apartment (2011) est un projet spécialement conçu pour l’appartement. Son intervention perturbe l’espace avec humour et oblige les visiteurs à expérimenter l’idée
même de pénétrer dans l’intimité d’une collection privée.
Jan Koch (1978) vit et travaille à Berlin. À travers ses peintures, c’est un panel de l’histoire moderne
de l’art qu’il revisite et expérimente, Malévitch, Mondrian, Matisse, Fontana, Forg, Knoebel… Il peint
ses dernières toiles à l’envers et les incise, les découpes laissent apparaître des formes multiples qui
donnent parfois l’illusion de volumes. Un carré noir par Malewitsch devient un clown ou le nez de
Mickey Mouse, et les formes abstraites qui l’entourent sont réarrangées comme une composition de
fruits, de sucreries ou de produits de charcuterie.
Samuel Richardot (1982) vit et travaille à Paris et Cahors. Il peint des formes qui se réfèrent avant
tout à des images, des impressions, des sons, des odeurs, des paysages sans pourtant devenir une
peinture figurative. Dans ses toiles, le temps fait son œuvre, la fluidité, les coulures et autres accidents
donnent l’impression de multiples entités organiques, des éléments distincts émergent alors comme
autant de symboles à la fois étranges et familiers. Une nouvelle série de 5 toiles de petit format de
2011 sera exposée pour la première fois.
Yorgos Sapountzis (1976) vit et travaille à Berlin. Il exposera à Paris en octobre prochain au grand
palais à l’occasion de la FIAC. Il œuvre dans une pratique foisonnante, entre la performance, l’installation et la sculpture. Il s’approprie des espaces urbains, des monuments en particulier, héritage
culturel de sa ville natale Athènes. Entre rituel du quotidien et exploration spatiale, il cherche avant
tout à établir une tension avec le public. L’œuvre présentée Green night (2005) révèle l’enjeu de sa
démarche. Filmé de nuit et rythmé au montage par un son électro et des teintes colorées, une dynamique tient en haleine comme un rêve éveillé.
Anne E. Wilson (1983) vit et travaille à New-York. Elle travaille principalement la sculpture à partir
de déchets récoltés à travers le monde qu’elle considère avant tout comme des traces. Elle procède
d’abord par identification puis cherche à révéler leur potentiel en une forme logique, expression
condensée de rapports sociaux et psychologiques complexes. L’œuvre City flowers (2008) n’est que
parcellaire, une trentaine seulement sont présentées sur une totalité de 1000. Ces fleurs réalisées à
partir de mégots de cigarettes disent beaucoup de notre société, des fleurs étonnantes et différentes les unes des autres, des fleurs consumées qui sentent le tabac froid, symbole et métaphore du
monde actuel, entre addiction frénétique et consumérisme de masse.

EDITO
Nous sommes deux artistes basés à Lyon et nous avons décidé
de fonder un nouvel espace d’exposition à l’occasion de la 11ème
biennale d’art contemporain de Lyon.
INTERIOR and the collectors n’est pas un espace d’exposition
conventionnel, c’est un appartement de charme dans un immeuble
classé du XVIIe au centre de Lyon. C’est aussi un espace plus
confidentiel qui peut être loué pour une ou plusieurs nuits. Il est
ouvert au public deux jours par semaine pendant la biennale.
Nous souhaitons développer des expositions collectives temporaires dans ce lieu atypique.
Pour l’exposition inaugurale collection n°1, nous invitons le public
dans un espace privé pour montrer l’art dans le cadre intime d’un
appartement qui n’est pas dédié à la monstration mais à la vie
quotidienne. Nous avons imaginé l’intérieur d’un collectionneur
débutant, ce qui nous a permis de nous confronter à un espace
plus restreint, plus contraignant qu’un musée mais plus personnel
et singulier. Ce collectionneur n’existe pas, nous l’avons créé
au fil de nos rencontres avec d’autres artistes. La sélection des
artistes ne répond pas à une thématique ou à une problématique
particulière, c’est une logique plus personnelle proche d’une
démarche de collectionneur qui nous permet de croiser les genres et de mélanger des artistes émergeants avec des artistes
confirmés. Les œuvres présentées sont très variées, conceptuelles, décalées, surprenantes, parfois violentes. L’espace privé
permet une liberté totale, un échange local et dense formant
les bases d’un art multiculturel et sensé. C’est une autre façon
de voir une exposition, bien loin de la neutralité d’une galerie ou
d’un musée.
