It’s hot in the Sultanate. Fortunately for those seeking adventure, this mountainous country offers surprising refreshments. We tested a thrilling trekking tour. I It is seven o’clock in the morning as we hoist our rucksacks on. Our guide Said intends to tackle the ascent from the Tiwi wadi during the cooler morning hours. The path leads over rough scree and up through the deep gorge to the plateau. Despite the sharp stones, our guide’s feet are protected only by basic sandals. Hiking boots would pamper his callouses, he says with a laugh: “In the old days we villagers always went about barefoot.” The territory we are hiking through is barren, consisting of bare rock, from which here and there a thorny bush grows. To the east, the sea and sky merge into an intensive blue. This is a land of extremes, and of uncompromising beauty. By early afternoon we have arrived at the place where we’ll spend the night. The small oasis of Ghamb consists of a few buildings, palm trees and some livestock. A walled basin forms the highest point in the settlement. The sluice gate is opened every few hours, allowing the water from the source In die Grotte im Wadi Shab gelangt man nur schwimmend. The only way into the grotto at Wadi Shab is by swimming. Besonders an heissen Tagen. Sandals regardless of the terrain: trekking guide Said on the way up to the Wadi Tibi. 62 Adventure to irrigate the gardens via a sophisticated system of channels. At some point during the evening Said’s friend Hashel appears. The gaunt man will accompany us through the gorge tomorrow morning. Hashel is thoroughly familiar with the Shab wadi. He previously grazed his goats here and slept in caves, sometimes for a week at a time. Said grew up in the neighbouring village and is therefore known by one and all here. We spend the stifling afternoon on a veranda, over which mats are scattered. Small cups of strongly spiced tea are served, along with dates and melon. In the evening, we dine on rice with vegetables and fish, which we eat by hand together from the same bowl. Such wonderful hospitality! Ready for a cool dip? There is no actual trail. We hike over the sand and gravel of the bed of the dried-out river and climb over rocks that have been washed clean over the millennia. Whenever a rumbling sound is hear Hashel and Said suddenly take cover against the wall of the cliff. Falling rock and spring floods are the greatest hazards in the canyons of Oman. As we struggle between the rough walls of the cliff our guides tell us about the daily life of local herdsmen and oasis dwellers. The temperature rises steadily. We have been keeping our necks covered with scarves. As we proceed, we stop with increasing frequency to drink water and eat dates to keep our strength up. After five hours we come to the ponds at the lower part of the canyon and immediately dive into the turquoise water. There is also a cave here, which can be reached by swimming through a narrow passage. This produces an overwhelming feeling, accompanied with numerous gleeful shouts. Such refreshment in the middle of a desert landscape is most unexpected! It’s no wonder, then, that canyoning is one of the top activities in Oman for those who enjoy a physical challenge. Especially on hot days. We like the Wadi Bani Khalid, located not from the coastal city of Sur, even better. Right from the start there are spectacular pools into which the boys from the nearby village are diving headlong. They are having a great time, plunging simultaneously in groups of four or five into the water. But we can’t tarry here – the wadi we are walking along extends for nearly ten kilometres. We advance with a combination of climbing, wading and swimming. Cliffs tower above us to the right and left, massive boulders are jumbled together on the valley floor. A trekker floating in the lime-green water is a small being indeed. Oman is a land of variety – home to mountains that rise to 3,000 metres, high-level plateaus with aromatic rose gardens, fjords, incense trees and gazelles. We spend one night in the dunes of the Wahi- Oman 63 und Gazellen - Oman ist ein abwechslungsreiches Land. Aufregende Touren gibt es wahrlich genug im Land der freundlichen Omanis. ba Desert, the next on coastal cliffs, and a third at Misfat al-Abriyeen, a mountain oasis. Before the sun comes up we go for a walk through the oasis garden. The water gurgles in the channels, birds twitter and farmers cut grass for their cows. Palm trees, pomegranates, lemons and mangos grow here in Misfat. You feel like you’re in a scene from the Old Testament, aside from the fact that “the prophets” communicate via mobile phone and drive all-terrain vehicles. Breakfast at our accommodation consists of freshly squeezed juice and pancakes with date syrup. An incense burner glows faintly. After a couple of cups of coffee with cardamom, we’re ready for the next hike, of which there is an abundance in friendly Oman.
