comedy
The
Reluctant Matador.
Commenting on the choice of

said, “Beeban’s enthusiasm for this
project is wonderful. She’s the
perfect director to elevate the
comedic moments in the script.”
Kidron began directing feature films
in the late 1980’s and first attracted
notice with her award-winning TV
movie Oranges Are Not The Only
B
Fruit, which won her a BAFTA TV
Award in 1991. As part of Myriad
Pictures’ overall business plan to
generate at least half of its slate
through UK driven productions and
co-productions, The Reluctant
Matador is scheduled to begin
shooting later this year. Myriad
Pictures is financing and coproducing the film, alongside
Charles Finch and Luc Roeg's
Artists Independent Network (AIN).
Myriad is currently in discussions
with number of potential Spanish
co-producers for the film.

DISTANT HORIZON CONTINUES STRONG TIES TO ASIAN REMAKES
JET LI’S HERO & THAI FILM TOOTSIE LATEST PROJECTS
istant
Horizon,
the
international
film
financing, production and
distribution company headed by
Anant Singh, has stepped-up its
slate of Asian titles and its
continued focus on the booming
remake business. The company has
licensed two new Asian properties,
Jet Li vehicle My Father Is A
Hero from Hong Kong’s China
Star, and Thai box office comedy
hit Saving Private Tootsie from
Film Bangkok, for English
language remake. “We have a very
strong, long-term relationship with
China Star,” said Singh, “and we’re
delighted that they’ve entrusted
this gem in their catalog to us. This
is, by far, my favorite Jet Li movie,
as it not only delivers on the action
front, but it is also has one of the
most strongly developed narratives
that you’ll find in all of Jet’s Hong
Kong pictures. We feel it has
D
amazing relevance for an updated
adaptation, and we intend to bring
a top writing talent to the project.”
China Star chief executive Tiffany
Chen commented, “We have had a
very successful production and
distribution partnership with
Distant Horizon on the ‘Black
Mask’ franchise, and they’ve
helped us gain a foothold in the
U.S. market. We feel the remake
potential for My Father Is A Hero
is enormous, and Distant Horizon
has a proven track record both
concepting and setting up these
types of deals.” My Father Is A
Hero is the dramatic story of an
undercover government operative,
who pays the ultimate price of
giving up his family and his own
good name to infiltrate an
organization dangerous to the
state, will be adapted to the present
day climate in the U.S., where
security and patriotism are hot-
button issues. China Star is one of
the largest film production
companies in Hong Kong, with
both a distribution and exhibition
arm in the former colony and on
the mainland. Black Mask 1 and
Black Mask 2, for whom they
partnered with Distant Horizon,
have been distributed in the U.S.
through Artisan and Sony
respectively. The 2002 Thai box
office hit from director Kittikorn
Liwsirikun Saving Private Tootsie
follows the hilarious fate of a
washed-up troupe of drag queens
that gets fed up with a low-rent La
Cage tour of the provinces and
hitches a ride home with a
planeload of diplomats. Distant
Horizon will develop the remake
as a comic crossfire between an
American drag troupe and a U.S.
marine force, possibly setting the
crazy confrontation in a South
American country. Film Bangkok,
is a division of BEC-TERO
Entertainment, a production outfit
founded in 2000 by a diverse group
of Thai film producers. Since it’s
inception, the company has
produced four of the most
successful homegrown films in
Thailand, including Tears Of The
Black
Tiger,
Bangkok
Dangerous, Bang Rajan, and
Goal Club. Bectero celebrating its
32nd year, is a subsidiary of BEC
World PLC, one the largest
entertainment companies in Asia
with holdings in broadcast,
production, and distribution across
a full range of media – TV, radio,
film, music, internet, home video
and satellite transmission.
Distant Horizon founded by Anant
Singh and has a significant
presence in London, Los Angeles,
the Far East and South Africa
where Singh is based.

Harpo Films une étoile montante de la Production Française
Victorien Vaney et
Jean-Fabrice Barnault
ans la vaste galaxie de la
production française, les
jeunes
structures
contribuent à assurer la diversité et
le renouveau du cinéma français en
développant des projets aux
tonalités nouvelles avec une
sagacité et une vivacité singulière.
Ces nouveaux producteurs montent
au créneau avec de jeunes talents,
financent leurs courts-métrages, et
investissent les écrans avec des
sujets
qui
ne
sont
pas
nécessairement faciles à aborder.
Harpo films fait partie de ces étoiles
montantes. Fondée en 1997 et basée
D
à Paris, par Victorien Vaney, JeanFabrice Barnault et Christophe di
Sabatino (fondateur d’Antefilms)
cette société de productions de
films, de vente et d’acquisition de
droits a récemment fait parler d’elle
à travers sa dernière production
sortie sur les écrans français en mars
2003 : Quand tu descendras du
Ciel (From Heaven), une belle
fable sur l’itinéraire erratique et
émouvant d’un jeune fermier en
proie aux délires de la vie urbaine,
une œuvre saluée unanimement par
la critique et qui continue d’être
réclamée dans de nombreux
festivals.
Harpo
films a également produit la
comédie de Nicolas Cuche, Jojo la
frite (Accidental Saint). Harpo
films œuvre actuellement sur la
production d’une nouvelle comédie:
L’Enfant (The Baby). Il devrait être
réalisé conjointement par Irène
Sohm et Jean-François Galotte, un
des brillants comédiens de Quand
tu descendras du Ciel et
compterait déjà sur le talent
d’interprétation de Catherine Frot et
François Cluzet. Son budget
prévisionnel est de 4 millions
d’euros. Cette vibrionnante équipe
développe
également
des
coproductions tant à l’échelle
européenne
(Danemark
et
Allemagne
notamment)
qu’internationale comme avec
l’Argentine, le Mexique, Hong
Kong ou le Japon, et souhaite
renforcer ce réseau d’alliance en
accentuant la mise en chantier d’une
grande variété de projets avec tous
les partenaires qui lui font déjà
confiance, ce qui devrait leur
permettre de disposer relativement
rapidement d’une large audience et
d’un fort potentiel de croissance.
Dans le même temps ils espèrent
développer leur activités de vente et
d’acquisition internationales.
En 2003, Harpo films, en
association avec des investisseurs
privés, devrait participer à la
création
d’un
fonds
d’investissement
destiné
à
l’acquisition de droits d’adaptation
et au développement voire au codéveloppement, de près de cinq
projets par an, un fonds pour lequel
ils recherchent déjà activement de
nouveaux projets.

The Lighter Side Of The Business Of Film (Life should not always be so serious)
Vive La France And The French
THE FACE OF BUREAUCRACY - THE FACE OF BUREAUCRACY - THE FACE OF BUREAUCRACY - THE FACE OF BUREAUCRACY
he bureaucracy that exists in
government departments is
known, but it is difficult to
believe just how sticky the red tape
can be until one is caught up in trying
to replace a stolen passport. This
Saga began 10 days ago. On calling
the Jamaican Embassy in Washington
D.C., I was told, “You will have to
wait for six weeks. “Impossible,”
said I. On calling Jamaica direct, the
rote message was repeated, “Put your
life on HOLD for six weeks,” said
they. “You are out of your tree,” I
replied. “Aren’t you listening?” said
they. Several sleepless nights and a
zillion frustrating phone calls later, I
found myself saying that unless I
could find a sensible flexible person
who could look at the exceptional
circumstances, the Prime Minister’s
office in Jamaica would be my next
call. Fortunately I was then speaking
to the Deputy Consulate for Jamaica
in New York – Ms. Laura Mc Neal –
the only sensible person I
encountered in my frantic quest.
Thank you, Ms. Mc Neal for pushing
the boat out. I flew from LA to NY
and within 24 hours – hey Walla! –
my passport was in hand. Next,
although I have lived in the UK all
my life, thanks to the influx of drugs
carried into the UK via condoms by
desperate and stupid ‘human’ mules,
I needed a re-entry visa back into the
UK and a French visa to cross the
border and attend the Festival.
Monday 5th May, New York,
T
acquired passport. Tuesday 6th May,
enroute back to LA. Wednesday 7th
May, scheduled a Lufthansa flight
back to London to expedite my visa at
the French Consulate. Hold on – the
French Consulate in London, no
longer answers the phone. That’s
right, it does NOT answer the phone.
Calls to the French Embassy fell on
Napoleonic ears. The 24 hours
between Tuesday (6th) and my
Wednesday (7th) 3PM Lufthansa
flight were spent on the phone to
London, trying in absolute vain to
reach the French Consulate. By 9AM
Wednesday morning, there was no
word from the British Consulate that
I was entitled to a reentry visa. 10AM
– security checks dictated I be at the
airport by 12Noon – still no word.
Finally at 10.10AM, “YES, you are
cleared for UK entry.” But there is
still the unresolved matter of a French
visa. Without it, in no way can I
attend the Festival to work for my
company. Inspiration: I happen to be
helping a French associate with an
event. I call her and ask if perchance
she knows anyone at the French
Consulate. By the grace of the gods,
she does and – unbelievably – I rush
to the French Consulate on Wilshire
Blvd. and obtain the vital visa in 15
minutes. Another rush to the British
Consulate, pick up re-entry visa, rush
back to hotel, make it to plane, arrive
without
detours
or
further
bureaucratic frustration in Nice – but
no luggage!
That’s life. It’s
comforting to know there are still
some pockets of human connection
that by sheer luck I was able to
connect with and benefit from in a
time of desperate need – a HUGE
THANK YOU to the staff at the
French Consulate in Los Angeles for
their quick help in recognizing the
urgency of the problem and for acting
in a manner that only the French can
with panache. The saga is not
finished. It’s appalling that anyone
should have to go through such an
incredible nightmare. A detailed letter
will be enroute after the festival to the
various Ministers of Jamaica, France
and the UK. Will it be of any use? I
am bound and determined that it will.
Millions of people all over the world
go through this bureaucratic
nonsense daily in one form or
another. If it’s not a passport, it’s
something else. It’s shocking that the
individuals manning these various
government departments (with the
exception of Ms. McNeal and the
French Consulate in LA), apparently,
from my experience, simply do not
care, nor have any regard or empathy
for inhuman suffering that is caused
by a complete disregard of basic
human understanding while they sit
securely behind a desk playing with
people’s lives and livelihoods every
day, knowing that once they put the
phone down all connection is broken
and continue playing possum until
the next victim comes along.
