Que peut-on souhaiter à Grégoire Moulin? In the thirties and forties, the Sunset Strip was the enclave of a golden era. Intellectuals and celebrities such as Robert Benchley, Dorothy Parker, Greta Garbo and Errol Flynn enjoyed dinner dances at supper clubs such Ciro’s and Mocambo before retiring to the legendary Garden of Allah courtyard hotel, a popular hang-out with Humprey Bogart, Howard Hughes and F. Scott Fitzgerald. O In the following decades, the Strip enjoyed the underworld edge of Bugsy Siegel and a series of social revolutions. From the flower children to the glam-rockers and the dance scene, fans of music trends have been tuning in to legendary Strip club venues like the Whisky, The Roxy and the Viper Room. Buildings of architectural interest include the Sunset Plaza, designed by Charles Selkirk in an assortment of Neoclassical, Regency and Colonial Revival styles and Piazza del Sol, a stately Spanish complex built in 1929 and recently restored to its original glory. Other well known landmarks include the Argyle Hotel, Tower Records, The Comedy Store, Carney’s and the street’s famous billboard of the giant Malboro Man. Sidewalk cafes, fashion boutiques, bookstores and bars complete a blend of American and European styles. Interested in filming at a location within the City of West Hollywood? I overheard in the corridor of the Carlton Hotel revered critic Derek Malcolm of The Guardian newspaper raving about Japon. He was describing the freshness and sensitivity of first time director Mexican Carlos Reygadas, particularly in the scene between the 35 year old man and the 80 year old woman. Malcolm declared before I slipped out of earshot, that Japòn is his favourite film of the Festival so far. M Is A Television In Your Child’s Bedrooms?
