The canton of Fribourg has long pursued an economic policy that promotes sustainability and innovation. Together, they can be a source of prosperity as well as guaranteeing a quality living environment for all. The planned technology and innovation park on the former site of the Cardinal Brewery will allow the canton and its vibrant downtown to shift up a gear, quickening the pace of development still further. This innovation quarter will give the canton a fresh impetus in terms of its competitiveness and economic reach, enabling it to position itself as a national, and even international, centre of innovation. The timing of this issue of Fribourg Network could not be better. It not only offers a very encouraging assessment of our ongoing efforts to put in place a real culture of innovation and creativity in our canton but also opens up a multitude of exciting prospects for our economy. In today’s globalised world where competition transcends regional and national borders, innovation and creativity have become key drivers of growth and major factors behind the continued success of companies. The research bears this out: creative and innovative firms are better able to weather economic storms, emerging stronger and more prosperous. During a speech to the first Fribourgissima Congress in 2010, Klaus Schwab, founder and executive chairman of the World Economic Forum in Davos, declared that: “We have moved from a world where the big eat the small to a world where the fast eat the slow”. Although I agree with him, I believe that it will be rather creative and innovative economies which will win out in the end. As you will see for yourself, the canton of Fribourg appears to have what it takes to become a veritable innovation powerhouse. Absolument. At Maxwell Technologies in Fribourg, they are working on energy storage and power delivery solutions that are not only efficient but innovative. Maxwell Technologies’ Vice President and General Manager in Fribourg, Sacha Jenny, talks to Fribourg Network about the importance of creativity and pushing technological boundaries. e_ Sacha Jenny, Vice President and General Manager of Maxwell Technologies in Fribourg. f_ Sacha Jenny, vice-président et directeur général de Maxwell Technologies à Fribourg. d_ Sacha Jenny, Vizepräsident und Generaldirektor von Maxwell Technologies in Freiburg. Our global turnover last year was USD 120 million. It’s hard to break this down on a country basis as parts are sometimes assembled across different countries, including Switzerland, the US, China and Taiwan. Why is Fribourg a good place to have one of your major facilities? Actually, our current site was previously owned by a company called Montena Components SA, which we acquired and assimilated into Maxwell Technologies in 2003. Nevertheless, from a logistics perspective, Fribourg is a fantastic place to be; it’s in the middle of Switzerland and right in the heart of Europe. We have great transport links, both in terms of roads and international airports, which allow us to attract talent from cities in addition to Fribourg such as Berne and Neuchâtel, where there’s a long history of microelectronics industry. We have a good technology network in Fribourg, which is very useful to us, as well as the strong support we get from the local authorities. How important is creativity at Maxwell Technologies? Fundamentally, we’re a technology company and it’s our job to create innovative technology that we can turn into value-added products, ahead of the curve. Creativity is absolutely fundamental to us. We spend a lot of money each year on research and development, not just to finance prototypes but to hire new talent and to expand our existing team of engineers. Tell us about your principal areas of business and your outlook for the future? Sacha Jenny: We’re an American group with headquarters in San Diego, California. We have three main lines of business. The first is our ultra-capacitor business, which is about storing electricity; these are low-voltage devices. We also have a high-voltage capacitors division where we make components for the electricity grid. Here, components range from 72kV right up to over one million volts. These components are used at electricity substations to open circuit breakers, just like a big switch. They basically absorb the energy when you open the switch. The third arm of our business is microelectronics for aerospace. We have invented and patented ceramic materials that prevent ionic radiation from damaging electronic components. Our materials essentially work as a shield. 6 | introduction We have also organized ourselves away from a traditional vertical organization to one where the hierarchy is very much in the background. We’re trying to create a stimulating environment for our engineers. It’s also important to us to build multidisciplinary teams for our projects. We also think that it’s very important to connect with other institutions and universities to discuss what we are doing, either for informal talks or to discuss CTI funds that are allocated to research by the Swiss federal authorities. In November, Maxwell Technologies announced its participation in “Electrograph”, a European Research Program to ‘Investigate Use of Graphene in Energy Storage Products’. This project is partially funded by the European Union. 2012 | FRIBOURG network FREIBURG What are some of the most interesting products that Maxwell Technologies is working on today? Alot of our projects are highly confidential. However, it’s safe to say that following the IT revolution, we’re now in an energy revolution. We’ve been participating in this for many years by producing products for the electricity grid. One of our main projects is the ‘smart’ grid: how can we make electricity grids globally more ‘intelligent’ and, therefore, more efficient? Also, when it comes to alternative energy sources, such as windmills and solar power, how do you convert those and inject the energy into an AC network? The biggest challenge is to convert and store a massive amount of energy in an efficient way. Also, it is becoming more popular, not just in Switzerland but elsewhere, for households to make their own energy – such as from solar panels – and to then sell any surplus energy back to the grid. This is becoming a massive issue worldwide. We want to become more active in this domain. What are some of the biggest challenges ahead? Maxwell Technologies is still a fairly small company but we believe we have the right technology, products and ambitions to keep growing. However, the global economy is upside down and it’s very hard to know what will happen next, if and when we will take a hit, and what the magnitude of such a hit would be. As an entrepreneur, my job is to look at different scenarios against a backdrop of crisis in the Eurozone. We also believe that it is necessary to outsource some work to markets like China, because to win we must be cost-competitive. Both China and India have a cost structure that is hard to beat. We have to strike the right balance between work that is carried out locally for niche markets and work that is outsourced to China. For example, our high voltage capacitors operations are all carried out in Switzerland but we have outsourced low-value added assembly work to China for the past three years. This strategy has been very successful, particularly for penetrating the BRIC region, where we are seeing tremendous growth. Our value proposition resides in our ability to push the boundaries because we’re small and dynamic and can move quickly. How do you see your industry 20 years from now? Maxwell believes that this industry will keep growing significantly over the next few decades, as the need for efficient energy production, transmission and distribution becomes more and more vital for generations to come. Martial Suchet, Manager at Liebherr’s plant in Bulle, Switzerland, tells Fribourg Network why alternative energy is the future. e_ Martial Suchet, Manager, Liebherr Machines Bulle SA f_ Martial Suchet, Directeur, Liebherr Machines Bulle SA d_ Martial Suchet, Direktor, Liebherr Machines Bulle SA Liebherr Machines Bulle SA is breaking new ground. In November 2011, the firm – which is responsible for the diesel engine, gas engine, hydraulics and multi-output pump transmission areas of the Liebherr group – unveiled its new alternative-fuel engines of between 4 and 12 cylinders in Hannover, Germany. “The G946 six-cylinder gas engine is the first fully-equipped Liebherr alternative-fuel engine developed in-house,” said Martial Suchet, Manager at Liebherr’s plant in Bulle, Switzerland. “It has been conceived specifically for stationary use, for example to drive combined heat and power generating units, pump sta- tions and electricity,” he added. Over the next three-to-four years, Liebherr is hoping to sell around 2,000 of these engines in markets such as Switzerland, Germany and Italy. “The countries that are interested in using alternative energy are very attractive,” Suchet explained. And new products like this require some major strategic – and creative – thinking. As such, creativity is very important to the group, Suchet said. “We are developing products that are highly technical. The new requirements, in term of emissions, performance and price need a lot of new solutions. Creativity is the freedom we give to people,” he said. Another big project Liebherr Machines is working on is reducing emissions from its motors for industrial application and trucks as has been stipulated by the European Parliament. Liebherr employs close to 900 people in Bulle, generating a turnover there of CHF 285 million in 2010. www.liebherr.com UCB Farchim Betting on Growth in Fribourg Region Global biopharma company, UCB Farchim is betting on growth in the Fribourg region. It plans to increase its workforce by more than 50% once its new bio-manufacturing plant in Bulle is completed in 2014, according to Amer Jaber, Vice President at UCB Farchim and Head of its Bulle Biotechnology Unit. Today, UCB employs 200 staff in Bulle. Jaber forecasts that the firm will grow this by as much as an additional 140 staff in 2014, once its new plant – in which it is investing EUR 250 million – is completed. “We’re going through a period of growth, hence the expansion. We are also building a similar bio-manufacturing plant in Belgium though the Belgian plant is a ‘pilot’ plant so it won’t be used for mass production like in Bulle,” Jaber said. UCB employs approximately 8,500 staff globally. UCB’s turnover, in 2010, was 3.2 billion Euros. Sales in the Swiss market represented around 1% of UCB’s global net sales in 2010. In the past three years, UCB has launched three new products in Switzerland: Cimzia, for rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn’s disease; Vimpat, which is an anti-epileptic drug; and Neupro for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. Cimzia is the first biological product that the firm has marketed so far, according to Jaber. www.ucb.com créativité dans les produits | 11 2012 | FRIBOURG network FREIBURG e s c n ar rg i S ye u o 0 b 5 Fri in Science For A Better Life Bayer International SA Rte de Beaumont 10 / CH-1701 Fribourg [email protected] 2012 | FRIBOURG network FREIBURG Un outil pour sauver des vies Datamed SA, leader suisse des solutions informatiques pour les laboratoires d’analyses médicales, lance le système d’alerte automatisé DMAlert. e_ Datamed is the leading Swiss supplier of software solutions for hospital laboratories. Such sensors are chosen in critical situations because they perform effectively in even the most extreme environments, from the low temperature of an aircraft in flight to the highest temperatures of a gas turbine combustion chamber. “Customers demand our high quality monitoring solutions to ensure the reliability and availability of critical assets which cannot fail because the economic, safety or environmental impact would be too devastating,” Peter Huber, president of Meggitt in Villars-sur-Glâne, said. Innovation is key in order to respond to any shifts in the industries that Meggitt supplies. As airplane manufacturers move towards automated health monitoring, Meggitt is developing new products such as its new landing gear monitoring system and tire pressure monitoring system to meet their needs, Huber said. Meggitt plans to launch several products within the next 12 months, including TPMS, its new tire pressure monitoring system for the Bombardier C-Series regional jet. The product marks the first of a new generation of tire pressure monitoring systems from Meggitt, which will be utilized on a variety of aircraft. The system is scheduled to have its first flight in October. The sensor manufacturer will also launch VibroSmart this year, a distributed monitoring system used to assess the performance and health of small turbomachinery and other rotating machinery. This would, effectively, roll out monitoring systems for smaller equipment, such as wind turbine generators. www.meggitt.com e_ Peter Huber, president of Meggitt. f_ Peter Huber, président de Meggitt. d_ Peter Huber, Präsident von Meggitt. They have the potential to radically change our everyday lives; today, self-healing materials are no longer just a pipe dream. Imagine this scenario: you’re about to get into your car on a Monday morning, and you see that some thankless passerby has scratched it right down the side. Instead of sighing in frustration – at the thought of a costly garage bill looming – a cheap fix may soon be on the cards. Researchers at the Adolphe Merkle Institute (AMI) in Fribourg have developed a polymer-based material that can heal itself when placed under ultraviolet light for less than one minute. Its molecular design allows the materials to change their properties in response to a high dose of ultraviolet light. The institute has been working on the project with researchers at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, in the US. The new materials were created by a mechanism known as supramolecular assembly, according to Professor Christoph Weder, director of the Adolphe Merkle Institute. “Unlike conventional polymers, which consist of long, chain-like molecules - with thousands of atoms - these materials are composed of smaller molecules, which are assembled into longer, polymer-like chains using metal ions as ‘molecular glue’,” he said. When researchers used lamps similar to those that dentists use on fillings, they could repair any scratches in the polymers. Wherever they waved the light beam, the scratches ‘filled up’ and disappeared. When the light is switched off, the material re-assembles and solidifies again, just like it was before it was heated. “We could repeatedly scratch and heal these materials in exactly the same place,” Weder said. e_ Fribourg University’s Adolphe Merkle Institute is a center of excellence in nanosciences. f_ L’Institut Adolphe Merkle de l’Université de Fribourg est spécialisé dans les nanosciences. d_ Das Adolphe Merkle Institut der Universität Freiburg ist auf Nanowissenschaften spezialisiert. “The great thing is that we now know that this works. However, we’re still in the testing stages and it’s hard to say when these materials could be available commercially,” he added. And now, the firm has taken exercise one step further with the introduction of electric bikes. At Scott Sports SA, sport is not just the company’s mantra but a very personal one, too. At the European headquarters of the multinational firm in Givisiez, which employs 170 people, around 80% of staff take an hour at lunch time to work out, according to Beat Zaugg, general manager of Scott Sports in Givisiez. Not only do the workouts boost people’s fitness but they also encourage deeper interaction between staff members, he added. Scott Sports is best known for its bikes, ski gear, running shoes and outdoor sports products. It employs around 600 people worldwide, a 50% increase from last year, following investment in or acquisitions of companies in Italy, South Africa, India and Korea. Turnover last year was around CHF 400 million globally, with almost 10% of this generated in Switzerland. In April, the firm launched its E-Venture electric bikes. It has two models – the ‘Sub’ and the ‘Sportster’, which differ slightly in their frame geometry. The ‘Sub’ bike is more for sporty riders with a rigid alloy fork and a slightly longer top tube. The ‘Sportster’ geometry with its suspension fork is made for a comfortable ride. They each retail for around CHF 3,500. So far, Scott Sports has sold 4,000 of them in Switzerland, Germany and Austria. Next year, the firm is hoping to double this by expanding into other, including Italy, France, Benelux, the U.K. and Scandinavia, Zaugg said. “A lot of our employees have now tested our electric bikes. It’s funny, because cyclists are often quite skeptical about electric bikes – until they try them. I think our bikes are especially good for commuting, as it’s less work to use them, so you don’t sweat as much. They’re also good for people who may not be so fit, as they are less tiring to use than conventional bikes because you don’t have to pedal as hard. Everyone who tries them says they’re alot of fun,” Zaugg said. e_ Scott Sports’ E-Venture electric bikes. f_ Le vélo électrique E-Venture de Scott. d_ Das Elektrovelo E-Venture von Scott. To date, the ongoing turbulence in the eurozone has not had a marjor impact on the company, Zaugg said. “The main effect that the financial crisis in the eurozone is having on us is that the Swiss Franc is very strong at the moment, which means that our cost structure in Switzerland is higher than anywhere else. Our exports haven’t been affected yet because we produce outside Switzerland and we price based on international markets,” he explained. www.scott-sports.com A Greener Future: How Johnson Electric is Cutting Fuel Consumption Johnson Electric is not a firm to sit on its laurels. At the Hong Kong-based group’s European headquarters in Murten, the team is “powering ahead to reduce fuel consumption in half by 2020”, said Yvan Bourqui. The firm has been based in Murten, in the canton of Fribourg, for almost 100 years. However, until five years ago it was known as Saia-Burgess, before being taken over by Johnson Electric. There are 650 employees in Murten who are working on automotive parts and on controllers for automation. This includes actuators for air-conditioning in cars such as BMW and Mercedes, as well as actuators for headlight adjustments. Johnson Electric’s global turnover last year was $2 billion, with CHF100 million generated in Switzerland. To halve fuel consumption by 2020, creativity is going to be key, according to Bourqui. “It’s important to us at Johnson Electric, as you need to be creative to tackle problems and challenges; that’s the reason why we are focusing on very skilled and very innovative people. To meet this energy-saving goal, all future cars will need several actuators to regulate different kind of valves to reduce fuel consumption – making such actuators is a big part of Johnson Electric’s business.” Bourqui further mentioned the canton of Fri- bourg is a great place to be based for several reasons, “It’s very ‘green’ and keen to reduce carbon emissions, like our carmaker clients. This has an impact on our business because cars need to reduce fuel consumption in order to reduce emissions.” In addition Bourqui said, “Johnson Electric has a strong relationship with the School of Engineering in Fribourg. And the quality of life in Murten must be quite something as many workers at Johnson Electric have been there for 15 to 20 years. The advantage of low staff turnover is that it allows you to really build the know-how.” www.johnsonelectric.com créativité dans les produits | 25 2012 | FRIBOURG network FREIBURG eVenture_arrive energetic_200x138_de.pdf 1 1/26/12 9:17 AM E-VENTURE C POWERED BY M SIEBEN GRÜNDE, AUF DAS SCOTT / BOSCH SYSTEM ZU VERTRAUEN: Y • • • • Komfortables, sicheres und wendiges Fahrverhalten Garantiert komfortable Geometrie bei einzigartigem Design Geringes Gewicht Leistungsstark, verzögerungsfrei und sehr harmonisch in der Kraftentfaltung • Hohe Installationsfreundlichkeit. Kreativität: Was sie davon halten und was sie daraus machen… Martin Lotti (37), Global Creative Director at Nike For the past 15 years, Martin Lotti has lived in Oregon, the home of Nike headquarters in the United States. Upon graduating from the Art Center College of Design in La Tourde-Peilz, the 22-year-old Fribourg native moved to the Pasadena campus of this private college. It was there that a friend suggested that he should send his portfolio to Nike. True to the multinational’s motto “Just do it”, Lotti followed this advice and has never looked back. Very quickly, he made a name for himself with his designs, eventually becoming global creative director of women’s footwear. It is a role that sees him combine his artistic talents with a mastery of state-of-the-art technology. Many of his designs have become iconic pieces, such as the Kyoto yoga shoe, whose sleek design was inspired by the sand patterns Lotti saw in the Zen garden of the eponymous Japanese city. The shoes were even exhibited by the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco. Another of his designs is the ultra-lightweight Air Max 360, launched back in 2006. His greatest source of inspiration are his travels around the world, drawing ideas from nature as well as the man-made environment, which is not surprising given his father is an architect. “I’m like a sponge”, he says. Today, Martin is busy working for the London Summer Olympics, designing the clothing and footwear to be worn by all NIKE-sponsored athletes. “I totally love working for the biggest event in the world, helping to shape its image and creating innovative sportswear. Nike is really supportive of its creative teams, which makes for a perfect working environment.” Even before the Summer Olympics have begun, Martin Lotti is already thinking ahead to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia. But after so many years living in the United States, does he still feel a close attachment to Fribourg? His response was succinct: “Absence makes the heart grow fonder!” Und am Fernsehen die Serie «Les bidules de Jules», in Anlehnung an das Schweizer Museum für Nähmaschinen und aussergewöhnliche Gegenstände in Freiburg. www.cine3d.ch 2012 | FRIBOURG network FREIBURG Adrienne Corboud, Vice President of Innovation and Technology at EPFL in Lausanne Discusses the School’s Research Activities “What’s so interesting is that you can do research for years until you discover something, and then it can turn into something really innovative. It’s all about ideas and creativity. From research that starts out at EPFL, we give birth to 10 to 15 start-ups a year. We have 340 laboratories at EPFL - and 8,400 students - so it’s hard to pick a couple of projects. We have a NeuroProsthetics centre that’s three years old, where José Milan and his team are working on a prototype for a mind-operated wheelchair. You basically wear a cap and it measures brain activity, so if you think that you want the wheelchair to turn right, it does. This is already being tested. It could also be useful for the car industry and the interface with machines, so we started collaboration with Nissan this year. “Another really creative project is Professor Michael Grätzel’s project about mimicking photosynthesis, which has now been industrialized. He started working on this in the 1980s. His dye-sensitized solar cells mimic the process of plant photosynthesis to convert light energy into electricity. The challenge has been to increase the efficiency of the dye-sensitized cells, in order to produce more electricity and increase stability. This has been done step by step, and recently the technology encountered a new breakthrough. The chemists replaced the standard dye components – ruthenium and iodine – with porphyrin and cobalt. This combination allows them to increase the absorption of sunlight and results in a more efficient electron exchange. It’s this exchange of electrons from the dye to the substrate that produces electricity. The team has just increased their efficiency by more than 12%. Another advantage of these cells is that they can be used even in a building with artificial light. Recently, Michael brought me a rucksack with a flexible panel of dye-sensitive cells and inside there’s a plug, so I can recharge my phone when I’m out and about, which is very useful!” The Adolphe Merkle Institute in Fribourg may only be four years old but it has gotten off to an auspicious start. Focusing on soft nanomaterials science – polymers, colloids and biomaterials – it is on a mission to differentiate itself from other nanoscience and technology institutes, according to Professor Christoph Weder, director of the institute. “Our goal is to be an interdisciplinary centre of competence. We’d like to earn recognition as one of the world leaders in fundamental and applied research on soft nanomaterials, and expect our work to stimulate innovation,” he said. The Adolphe Merkle Institute was set up in late 2007 with the aid of a CHF 100 million donation by Fribourg-based entrepreneur, Adolphe Merkle. It forms part of the University of Fribourg and is located in Marly. At the time, Merkle explained his motivation as “wanting to give something back to Fribourg since the university town had given so much to him”. Since then, the institute has embarked on collaborations with a number of companies, including global medical group Fresenius and local maker of rapid prototyping systems, 3D Systems. This year alone, the institute has received almost CHF 500,000 in funding from industry. Today, the institute has two main research departments: polymer chemistry and materials, and bionanomaterials, with around 60 people on the payroll. According to Weder, he is also in the process of launching a new search for a chair of the soft matter physics department. And there are a number of exciting projects underway. In the polymer chemistry and materials department, the team is working on stimuli responsive materials – materials that sense environmental changes and respond to them in preprogrammed and useful ways. “One bioinspired project takes its cue from the sea cucumber, which can change the stiffness of its skin,” Weder explained. “We mimic the architecture of this biological material to create mechanically adaptive materials for biomedical implants. These materials are stiff at the moment when the devices are implanted but soften after implantation in response to exposure to physiological conditions.” Cortical electrodes, which allow electric interfacing with the brain, also form part of the project. It is hoped that such devices one day can be used to help patients whose nervous system is impaired – such as stroke patients – by creating artificial brain-muscle interfaces. However, there are problems to be ironed out along the way. Such electrodes today are made from very rigid materials to make them easier to insert but the brain typically rejects them after a short while, likely because they are much stiffer than brain material, Weder says. He is hoping that that materials developed by the Adolphe Merkle Institute will tackle this problem because while stiff originally, they become soft once implanted. “This is a very interdisciplinary project to which we contribute the polymers, other groups fabricate electrodes, bring expertise in neural interfacing, or are experts in tissue response,” Weder said. Another project involves nanofibers isolated from wood, which has remarkable mechanical properties because of its hierarchical design, Weder says. Cellulose nanofibers can be isolated from wood and used to reinforce conventional polymers, making them stronger. One advantage of this is that such nanofillers are isolated from renewable sources. In addition, self-healing materials are also a big topic at the institute (see separate story on p. 19). For Weder, the biggest challenge is “to grow a new institute at the right pace – not too slow, not too fast”. So far, he seems to have struck a good balance. www.am-institute.ch e_ Christoph Weder, director of the Adolphe Merkle Institute in Fribourg. f_ Christoph Weder, directeur de l’Institut Adolphe Merkle à Fribourg. d_ Christoph Weder, Direktor des Adolphe Merkle Instituts in Freiburg. de la création au marché | 39 2012 | FRIBOURG network FREIBURG La diversité est gage d’un bon portefeuille. Dr. Jean-Marc Brunner (photo) who is in charge of the service in Fribourg University works on developing mutually beneficial partnerships between academe and local, national and international companies. As he explains: “Given that the university is funded from public monies, we have made it our mission to repay civil society by maximising the potential of our research output. Very often a discovery involves several applications that could be of interest to an industrial partner. It is up to the university to ensure that the returns from such partnerships are reinvested in new research”, he continues. Jean-Marc Brunner, who holds a doctorate in biology from the University of Lausanne, brings researchers and industrial partners together. He seeks to recruit only those companies that are best equipped to rise to the challenge of converting research results into products. “For purely logistical reasons we prefer to work with companies located not far from Fribourg. But we are equally keen to forge partnerships with companies based elsewhere in Switzerland and in other parts of the world.” The service has already managed to build successful partnerships with the medical, IT and chemicals’ sectors. Closer ties with the Fribourg hospital network are likely to consolidate these gains. www.tt-fr.ch Un capital d’amor- Blick auf die çage pour susciter Marktfähigkeit les vocations Favoriser l‘innovation dans l‘économie fribourgeoise. The rules of the game are the same for everyone, the size of the goal and the ice rink never change. But what makes the difference is when the player tries to invent something and to physically express what they are thinking. No two movements are the same, and no two games are the same. A creative ice hockey player is a player who is able to express himself and to move of his own accord. If he wants to stand out from the others, he has to free his mind and his soul. What distinguishes a competent athlete from a great athlete is the ability to take risks and not be frightened of making mistakes. His aim is to put on a show of outstanding sporting prowess and skill. I’m not heavily built, but my speed, combined with my skating and stick skills, allowed me to assert myself on the ice. It is the unexpected gesture that wrong-foots your opponent. My game was always difficult to read and my speed meant that I always managed to stay one step ahead of my opponent. It doesn’t matter if the defender is bigger or stronger than you. If you are faster, you will set the pace and dictate the terms. I believe that a coach can nurture creativity in his players. My coaches were always encouraging me to free my mind. They didn’t reprimand us every time we got something wrong. They pushed us to understand ourselves better so that we were able to express ourselves as freely as possible. Now that I’m a coach, I try to instil confidence and unity in my players. A number of Fribourg companies have successfully transformed their creative talent into a performance-management tool. Planning, developing ideas and risk-taking are part and parcel of an enterprise culture that is synonymous with innovation and growth. Another important, and sometimes overlooked, component of a successful enterprise culture is creativity, or to be more exact, the intellectual resources of the entrepreneur. These are resources that have been acquired through education, training, leisure pursuits, travel and personal relationships. Leading lights of the business world, such as Dr. Hans-Ulrich Pestalozzi, founder and Chairman of the not-for-profit IVE foundation (Institute for Value-based Enterprise), and Mr. Beat Fasnacht, Director of the Institut Guglera, not only look back on illustrious careers and extraordinary personal experiences (p. 68), but are also the embodiment and champions of strong human values. It is these values that mold their leadership style. The management and organization of a company draws on its heritage, history, values and core activities. But is there a place for creativity and can an enterprise culture be transformed into a performance-management tool? In this section, members of the Fribourg business community and companies based in the canton share their “secrets” with us, from a major multinational like Nestlé and its Cailler subsidiary in Broc, which remain true to the values of its founders while still fostering innovation, right down to small family-owned businesses like Brandt SA in Bulle, which takes a modern and dynamic approach to company management. Others apply tried-and-tested models specific to their sector, such as the Scrum method adopted by the agile web development company, Liip SA (p. 57). The company Polytype (p. 63) relies on training to stay one step ahead of the competition. While enterprise culture cannot be taught, entrepreneurship can. The Fribourg School of Business Administration (HEG), which has set the benchmark in Switzerland for entrepreneurship teaching, offers a “Master of Science in Business Administration, major in Entrepreneurship (Innovation and Growth)”. Professor Rico Baldegger (p. 51), Director of the Entrepreneurship & SME Institute, stresses the need to dismantle the barriers that exist between the academic and business worlds so as to foster greater interaction between students and companies. It is precisely here that the wellspring of creativity can be found! culture entrepreneuriale | 49 2012 | FRIBOURG network FREIBURG ARCHITEKTUR UND GLAS IN VOLLENDETER HARMONIE. Located in Broc, Switzerland, in Fribourg’s Gruyère region made famous for its milk production, Cailler - which is part of the Nestlé group - opened its factory there in 1898. “Today, about 50 dairy farming families supply the chocolate factory,” according to Catherine Saurais, Business Unit Manager for Chocolate at Cailler. “From the outset, Broc was the perfect location,” Saurais said. “The company could find top-quality milk in sufficient quantities, as well as a railway line to transport raw ingredients and ship the finished products.” Today, there are 330 full-time employees in Broc, though Cailler also brings in an additional 140 temporary staff during peak production times. According to Saurais, “In addition to working on new chocolate creations, Cailler is very committed to sustainability, focusing on its ‘Nestlé Cocoa Plan’ which supports cocoa farmers in increasing their income as well as protecting the envi- ronment. Cailler also aims to distribute 12 million cocoa seedlings of the ‘best quality’ by 2020.” Approximately 60% of the chocolate production of the factory in Broc is exported, mainly to France and Germany. But, for Cailler, “winning market share in its home market is very important and one of the key objectives for 2012,” Saurais said. Turnover in the Nestlé group in Switzerland in 2010 was CHF 2.14 billion, according to Cailler. www.maisoncailler.com. You then taste the chocolates - which contain hints of milk, caramel, nuts, fruit, flowers, vanilla and cocoa – before rating them online using a simple questionnaire. Within 48 hours of using the service, you will receive your personalized box of Maison Cailler chocolates. www.cailler.ch For a firm where new creations are of the essence, “innovation is paramount,” according to Saurais. “Creativity is needed in all fields at Cailler, from the machine technicians to the application group, administration, sales team and marketing. Swiss explorer Bertrand Piccard recalls how a few minutes after his first non-stop circumnavigation of the earth in a hot-air balloon, he realized that only 40 kg remained of the 3.7 tons of the liquid propane that he had set off with. “If we had landed with no fuel, the balloon would have crashed into the ground. It was at that moment that I decided not to rely on fossil fuels for my next roundthe-world voyage.” Some 12 years later, the explorer remained true to his word. In 2010, the first plane designed to fly day and night with no fuel and zero emissions touched down in Payerne. Besides its interest for the aeronautical industry, the Solar Impulse project seeks to promote clean technologies, which not only cut energy consumption but also use renewable sources. It took seven years to develop the carbon-fiber prototype, which has the wingspan of an Airbus A340 but weighs the same as a family car. For the development team, the Solar Impulse project was not simply about the technological challenge. They also saw it is a way to raise awareness of the importance of clean technologies for safeguarding the planet. Lust auf Innovationen? 2012 | FRIBOURG network FREIBURG Cutting-edge creative talent: born and bred in Fribourg ! Et Alex dépasse même les frontières puisque certains de ses dessins sont repris par Courrier International (versions papier et internet). www.laliberte.ch Serge Nidegger (39), Screen Printer and Sign Painter Wherever you are in the world, there is every chance that you will see someone sporting a Lowrider t-shirt. The creative force behind the brand is Fribourg husband-and-wife design team, Serge and Valérie Nidegger, who originally created the t-shirts to advertise their screen printing workshop, which they set up in 2000. The clothing range has since become a stand-alone business and has enjoyed huge growth since 2006. A highly respected name in the world of printing and design, Serge Nidegger also works for galleries and renowned graphic artists. His style is characterized by retro visuals and vibrant colors. The Lowrider clothing range includes some 60 different t-shirts, including the famous “We love Roger!”, which replaces the letter “O” with tennis balls, or the surreal “I hate sushi”, featuring a decapitated talking fish. No matter what their motif, all Lowrider t-shirts are hand-printed and rise above the latest fashion dictates. Nidegger does not like to rush his work, preferring to allow his inspiration to set the pace. As he explains, “Pleasure first, marketing later”. His passion for screen printing dates back to his childhood love of stickers. Today, Nidegger trains the next generation of screen printers in his computer-free studio. His talents are also on full view on the Rock’n’Wall of Fri-Son, the cultural and music venue where Nidegger worked as a sign painter and artistic director. He has also worked for the Wallpaper Museum in Mézières, where he created 19th century wall coverings with his friend and fellow artist, Michel fr. www.lowriderteeshirt.ch www focus | 67 2012 | FRIBOURG network FREIBURG Creativity: in words, in action... Never will this be more true than in 2012, when Ladurée celebrates its 150th jubilee. Throughout the year, we will unveil a brand new collection every month. My team and I are very lucky to have a job that imposes no limits on our desire to invent and innovate, whether it be new flavors, colors, or textures. I draw a great deal of inspiration from my travels. On my return, I share my ideas with my chefs in Paris and my select creative team. When I took over Ladurée in 1993, our flagship product – macaroons – came in only four flavors. In the ensuing nine years, we have created hundreds of new varieties and have extended our existing range of sweets and delicacies to include chocolate and gourmet items, to name but a few. In doing so, we have succeeded in transforming the oldest pastry shop in Paris into a prestigious global brand. Our magnificent new production site in Enney (La Gruyère) is particularly special to me. It is here that our macaroons are made and sent to all our shops across the world, with the exception of those in France. It took some time before I found the ideal site, travelling as far afield as Dubai, North Africa and Eastern Europe. However, the conditions that Fribourg offered our company were unbeatable. We would never have been able to complete the construction work so quickly if we had not enjoyed the wholehearted support of the region and its economic development agency. During this process I encountered human values that I still hold dear but are regrettably no longer so easy to find. It was the most positive experience I have had in my career. Added to this is the fact that La Gruyère itself is a great source of inspiration. I believe in energies, and the positive energies in this region are extraordinary, not to mention the quality of the raw materials at our disposal. +41 26 304 14 00, www.promfr.ch Fri Up - Support PME KMU Start-up rte de la Fonderie 2, CP 235, 1705 Fribourg, t. +41 26 425 45 00, www.friup.ch platinn - plateforme innovation rue de Romont 33, CP 1205, 1701 Fribourg, t. +41 26 347 48 48, www.platinn.ch FINANCEMENT ET CAPITAL-RISQUE FINANZIERUNG UND RISIKOKAPITAL FINANCE AND VENTURE CAPITAL Capital Risque Fribourg SA Risiko Kapital Freiburg AG Venture Capital Fribourg LTD p.a.
