My mother has never seen any of my races” The young racer has been driving Formula 1 cars since 2006 and this year looks likely to win the World Champion’s title. In an interview, the Mercedes racecar driver talks about growing up in Monaco, the school of life that is Formula 1, the joys of organic gardening and the privilege of being able to pay his rent Interview Michael Wittershagen Fotos Wolfgang Wilhelm Herr Rosberg, Sie sind mehr als 200 Tage pro Jahr unterwegs. Was fasziniert Sie besonders am Rennsport? Also mache ich meinen eigenen. As the son of former Formula 1 World Champion Keke Rosberg, Nico Rosberg was introduced to motor sports at an early age. Born in Wiesbaden in 1985, he was driving karts by age six. A Formula 1 driver since 2006, Rosberg won his first Grand Prix in Shanghai in 2012 and has an excellent chance of winning the championship this season. Mr. Rosberg, You are on the move more than 200 days a year. Do you sometimes lose your bearings? Yes, I have woken up in hotel rooms and not immediately recognized where I was. I had a similar experience standing in line to check in at the airport; when I was asked where I was flying to, I found I didn’t have a clue. Do you suffer from homesickness, too? Yes, I often long for my home. That’s where I feel happiest, even though many of our Formula 1 races are held in wonderful places and we stay at great hotels. But home is the only place I can really relax, do my own thing, work out, recharge my batteries. What is it about racing you find particularly fascinating? It’s a constant challenge, a never-ending contest. I race against the rest of the field, against the clock, which keeps on ticking, and somehow also against myself because I am always trying to finish each round faster than the last. Does the life of a racecar driver involve much stress? To an extent, yes. Sometimes I am glad to have a day when I have no appointments. My life is minutely planned, even down to when I take time out to relax. Sounds pretty austere. Do racecar drivers have to diet constantly? That’s an ongoing issue in my life because I have to watch every single gram to keep my weight in the car to the minimum possible. I don’t have to lose weight, but I do need to maintain my weight and stay fit. That’s how I came to cooking. There’s not much I can buy from the supermarket – I couldn’t eat the pizza bases they sell there anyway because of all the stuff they contain. So I make my own. Was motiviert Sie am stärksten? So etwas will man immer wieder erleben. Draußen auf der Strecke erlebst du so [e] takes love to prepare good food. I have my own organic garden, and it’s great to be able to go out there and bring in zucchini and eggplants, chop them up, brush on a little oil, sprinkle some salt and rosemary over it all and slide the tray into the oven. It is possible to live healthily and enjoy yourself. What is your main motivation? Success. The moments on the podium for the trophy ceremony, the dinner with Prince Albert after my win in Monaco this past May – these are the memories that stay with you and act like fuel. You find yourself wanting these experiences over and over again. Your father was the Formula 1 World Champion in 1982 and has always supported you. What does your mother think of her son’s determination to become a racecar driver, too? She loves sports, but she would have preferred me to become a tennis player or a golfer. Then she wouldn’t have to worry every two weeks. My mother has never seen any of my races. When I’m out on the track, she often stays in and does some cleaning or goes for a walk. After the race, she gets a call from my Dad telling her how it went. There are 22 active Formula 1 drivers at present – how many of them have what it takes to make world champion? Several. Five of my opponents have already claimed the title at least once, and more than half a dozen of today’s drivers could definitely nail it. But Formula 1 is a tough sport, it takes more than being a good driver to become a champion. First you have to be given the chance to drive a top car, and that only happens if you are exceptionally talented. Then there are the finer technical points: You have to work alongside the engineers to adapt and fine-tune your racecar, and for that you need a certain grasp of Vier Fragen ... Was ist dann passiert? Was folgt danach? [e] engineering. You also need to demonstrate mental strength. Out there on the track you are under so much pressure but you cannot allow yourself a single mistake – not when the others are attacking you, not when you are speeding through the narrow streets of Monaco at 270 kph. We are dependent on the engineering, but the mind is where Formula 1 mostly takes place. So it’s the intelligent driver who wins the race? Yes, but I’m not talking about classic IQ intelligence. It’s more a question of shrewdness. You have to have a feel for the car, to be sensitive. You graduated from high school with an average mark of 2.1 and were planning to study aerospace engineering. What happened? That was the original plan. I never had any trouble with math and physics at school. All of my friends went to university and at first, it was strange for me to be taking a totally different path. That’s why I wanted to combine the two: to study and race. But then I couldn’t have done justice to either, so I was forced to decide. Today, you are the star of a Formula 1 stable … There’s no better university that Formula 1. At age 20, I rose straight to the top of a company. That kind of thing doesn’t happen in the regular world. Today, there are more than 1000 people working for our stable. I am part of the decision-making process alongside the bosses; I had to learn how to deal with people, how to motivate them, how to give and also take constructive criticism. What comes next? I have the great good fortune to be able to anticipate earning well in my career. The important thing is to hold on to that money for the future. Getting that right is almost a job in itself. You were raised in Monaco and never knew any money worries. How was that time for you? As a small child, I knew nothing else, so I thought it was a perfectly normal city. As I got older, I realized just how lucky I was and that I should be thankful that this path was open to me. Maybe I used to take all of it for granted, but not anymore: I am very grateful that I can always pay my rent.
