reist, staunt er: Dort müssen statt der Kinder die
Erwachsenen die Schulbank drücken – und Eltern,
die ihre Sprösslinge in der richtigen Welt schlecht
behandeln, werden kurzerhand in die
Besserungsanstalt gesteckt.
Was bei Kästner höchstens an einem verrückten

Tausende von Eltern strömen jährlich in
Elternkurse mit peppigen Namen wie Triple P oder
Step, Tendenz steigend seit Supernannys Zeiten im
Fernsehen. Nun entdecken auch staatliche Stellen
die Elternschule. Die basellandschaftliche
Vormundschaftsbehörde kann schlagende Eltern
neu per Verordnung in einen Erziehungskurs
schicken. Die Bildungsdirektion des Kantons
Zürich prüft, bestimmte Elterngruppen präventiv
zum Besuch von Bildungskursen zu verpflichten.
Manche Fachleute denken gar darüber nach, die
Eltern allesamt auf die Schulbank zu zitieren.
Doch: Lässt sich Erziehen überhaupt im
Abendkurs lernen? Wissenschaftler haben einige
der gängigen Elternbildungsprogramme auf den
Prüfstand gestellt. Die neusten Resultate sind
ernüchternd: Zwar fühlen sich die meisten Eltern
nach einem Kursbesuch sicherer in ihrer Mission
und kehren gestärkt ins Kinderzimmer zurück. Nur
scheint das bei den Sprösslingen weniger Wirkung
zu erzielen, als den Eltern lieb ist.

powers to make such a thing come true, more and
more parents visit classes to improve their
parenting skills in the real world of today. Inspired
by the likes of Supernanny on TV, courses of this
kind, bearing trendy names such as Triple-P or
Step, are continuing to gain popularity. Now,
government agencies are discovering the schools
for parents. Following a recent decree, the District
of Basle youth services (Basellandschaftliche
Vormundschaftsbehörde) is able to send parents
who have hit their children1 to a parenting skills
course. The Zurich canton education authority is
considering legislation making it compulsory for
certain groups of parents to attend an educational
course as a preventative measure. Some experts
are even contemplating sending all parents back to
the classroom.
However, is parenting really a skill that can be
taught in evening classes? Recent research
conducted on the efficacy of some of the most
common parental education programmes yielded
sobering results: On the one hand, parents are
more confident upon completion of the course and
return to the nurseries with renewed vigour. On
the other hand, the effect on the children
themselves seems to fall short of what the parents
would have liked.
