PARÉIDOLIE, International Contemporary Drawing Fair in Marseille
PRESS KIT PARÉIDOLIE, International Contemporary Drawing Fair in Marseille 19 boulevard Boisson 13 004 Marseille Information +33 (0)4 91 85 42 78 [email protected] 3rd Edition 27 - 28 August 2016 MARSEILLE (FR) PRESS RELEASE The third edition of PARÉIDOLIE, international contemporary drawing fair will take place the 27 and 28 AUGUST 2016 at the Château de Servières in Marseille (FR), during the opening week of the contemporary art scene, in the southern city of France. For this new edition, PAREIDOLIE will be presenting 14 international galleries, continuing its development while preserving the intimistic and friendly aspects, that made its success. After Bernard BLISTENE (2014) and Olivier KAEPPELIN (2015) the artistic committee will be chaired this year by art historian and curator Paul ARDENNE, and composed of art collectors, artists and institutional partners. Within the space of the fair, PAREIDOLIE will offer two Carte blanche to regional structures, present the work of a guest artist, and the projection room will be curated by journalist and critic Lea Bismuth. Beside the fair, she will also present a video installation by Hiraki SAWA, throughout the elegant Grobet-Labadie museum, a wealthy collectors’s house of the XIXth century. Thanks to partnerships with major institutions such as the FRAC Paca, museums and art centers as well as members of the Marseille Expo network, many exhibitions will take place during the so-called Drawing season, in the Marseille-Provence metropole. For many artists, the gallery hosted their first exhibitions outside of their own countries, such as Maurizio Cattelan, Sarah Lucas, Tracey Emin, Daria Martin, Martin Creed, Mat Collishaw, Angus Fairhurst. The gallery has also worked with various artists since the beginning of their careers, such as Vanessa Beecroft, Matt Saunders, Victor Man, Wade Guyton, Ali Kazma and Joanna Malinowska. Analix Forever has a particular affection for video, works on paper, poetry, and unusual works of art. For over 20 years, the gallery has been committed to showing multiple practices of design: design in its “traditional” sense (drawing), and in a larger sense, design in all of its forms, disciplines, and media. The mandatory authenticity emerging from the humility and modesty of the artistic practice is in reality a laboratory of creation, one that the gallery seeks to protect. Almost nothing For Paréidolie 2016, Analix Forever proposes a minimalist exhibition of two artists: Pavlos Nikolakopoulos (Greece) and Eszter Szabó (Hungary). Thomas Lévy-Lasne draws his inspiration from the everyday life. He intensifies moments of everyday life in order to present scenes that emphasize his art of the lighting effects, so particular and hard to master but inherent to the technique of the charcoal. The gradations of grey show chaotic images of street protest where the agitation creates a particular tension. For his deepest blacks, Thomas Lévy-Lasne crosses three layers of charcoal and so stresses the density of the coal and the twilight. A fixative makes slightly liquid the charcoal and blurs the precise hyper line of the artist, conferring an almost magic aspect on the violence of those scenes. Thomas Lévy-Lasne graduated at the National Fine Arts Academy of Paris. The gallery is situated on 100 Central Street, London EC1V 8AJ. Betts Project’s programme seeks to introduce a specialist audience and the wider public to new ways of discovering and thinking about architecture, through the exhibition and promotion of materials that have been part of the concept and/or process of architecture. Its aim is to support and promote work by established & emerging international architects, as well as lesser known or overlooked practices still very much relevant to the contemporary discourse. Betts Project is also driven by the desire to introduce architectural objects as work of art. For this purpose it realises high calibre exhibitions for new and established audiences, and in doing so, brings unique collectable works to the market. Focused in contemporary drawing in its most inclusive sense, the gallery was born with the aim of bringing contemporary art to the public with exhibitions that collect a wide range of contemporary art in this discipline. The program involves current forms of production in the art world and that which comes from editorial publishing and comics. After its initial opening as a non-profit space, etHALL has established itself as a gallery and began representing artists and participating in several art fairs such as ARCOmadrid 2015 and 2016, Summa 2014, JustMad 2012, ArteSantander and Swab – where it won the prize for “Best Gallery,” Over the five years of operation of the space etHALL has hosted and welcomed site-specific installations conceived by artists such as Sergio Prego, Alberto Peral, Ignacio Uriarte, Fleur Noguera and Patricio Velez as much as exhibitions dedicated to key authors in comics history in Spain, particularly Vázquez and Calpurnio. MARTIN VITALITI # 127 etHALL´s proposal for Pareidolie 2016 joins works by three artists: Julia Spínola, Ignacio Sáez and Martín Vitaliti. He then worked several years with the galerist Roger Pailhas in Marseille first then in Paris. In 1993 he was in charge with Pontus Hulten of the sculpture park « Devant le Futur » based in South Korea where he’ll spend a couple years. Between 2000 and 2005 he is made head of « Le Rectangle », Lyon Contemporary Art Center, where he will present exhibitions by Wang Du, L’atelier Van Lieshout, Stephan Balkenhol, Anselm Kiefer… In 2005 he is curator and organizer of a large sculpture exhibition in Jinan, China during which he showed pieces by Daniel Buren, Pierre Huygue, Anne Veronica Janssen… Convinced by the major role galeries play for artists, he finally founded his own gallery in 2005 with the support and trust of many artists. The gallery was founded in 2005 by Laurent Godin. It is located in the heart of Le Marais in Paris, one block from the Centre Pompidou. Since 10 years the program focuses on emerging and established artists – the gallery currently represents 20 artists – working with different media and participating to the discussion and evolution of contemporary art debate with a particular attention with practices dealing with politics and socio-cultural content. Acclaimed solo shows by Peter Buggenhout, Gonzalo Lebrija, Haim Steinbach, Mika Rottenberg, Alan Vega– among others - have been held in the marais space. But also several group shows gathering works by the artists of the gallery and other great international artists such as Eugène Leroy, Hans Josephson, John Armleder, Francis Picabia... In October 2015, the gallery celebrated its 10 year anniversary, opening a new space in Paris ; 500 square meters in the east of Paris. This second space is a new tool for new perspectives : As the space is located a little way out/far of the city center, it is an invitation to take time to re-think our relation to the art works and the exhibitions, out of the « classical gallery track ». This project space is a multi task / multi fonction space, the gallery organizes group shows but also solo shows only once or twice a year, events, talks…It is an ongoing project that aim to open new perspecSCOLI ACOSTA ALAIN SÉCHAS Ne’er Ag’in, 2015 Plage orange, 2016 tive /windows for visitors and artists Graphite, crayons de couleur sur papier Pastel sur papier of the gallery. 21 x 29,7 cm 58 x 42 cm Unique Galerie Laurent Godin also represents its artists in the most important international art fairs in Paris, GALERIE LAURENT GODIN Cologne, Miami, NY, Bruxelles... 5 Rue du Grenier Saint-Lazare 75003 Paris FRANCE T: +33 (0) 1 42 71 10 66 [email protected] www.laurentgodin.com GALERIE ISABELLE GOUNOD GLEN BAXTER PARIS - FRANCE Created in 2004, the Isabelle Gounod gallery presents emergent and outstanding artists from the french and international scene. Its artistic program is wide open to different media (painting, drawing, photography, video, installations and performances). The Gallery is recognised for its commitment and support towards artists whose concern is as much in writing, langage or representation of the body into space. Those last few years, the gallery was well known for her discovery and support of young artists who are now fully recognised on the french and international artistic market and entered private and public art collections such as : Centre Georges Pompidou, Société Générale Collection, CNAP, FMAC, Frac Auvergne, Frac PACA, Frac Haute-Normandie, Frac Basse-Normandie, MoMA (NYC), LACMA (USA), Houston Fine Arts Museum, Collection François Pinault, Collection Pernod-Ricard, etc. Glen Baxter – Solo Show Well known for his surealistic and absurd drawings, Glenn Baxter discover s surealism and dadaïsm with the works of Chirico, Picabia, Magritte, Ernst, Beckett, Roussel... Playing on words and images Glen Baxter thus develops his irony and incongruous sense of humour and adds funny comments to his images, in order to create a gap between text and image. The most funny situations being then related to seriously ridiculous text. «Les surréalistes appelaient ça le ‘frisson’ [en français dans le texte], GLEN BAXTER Untitled - 2008 - Encre et Crayon sur papier - 53x79 cm - Courtesy Galerie Isabelle Gounod cette impression soudain que le sol se dérobe, qu’on est allé trop vite, que l’on s’est trompé (...) At once a gallery and a platform, L’Atelier-ksr represents international artists through solo shows and art fairs, while inviting guest curators twice a year. L’Atelier-ksr supports the creation of ongoing works in experimental formats. The space encourages publications and editions. For this upcoming edition Pareidolie 2016, we would like to investigate performance art in relation to its production of presence, relating to the nature of a gesture process. If the traces of a performance could be inscribed as a historical continuum of the performance itself, the project aims to focus on the ontology of this ‘immaterial labour’, where performance does not end with the experience in front of an audience. It rather constitutes an art form through the production of independant pieces and their subsequent mediatization. The gallery’s programming focuses on the links between art and notions of environment, space and architecture. Its research concentrates on the conceptual work of the artists through various media. The artists represented by the gallery are : Les Frères Chapuisat (CH), Caroline Corbasson (FR), Karim Forlin (CH), Séverine Hubard (FR), Jan Kopp (FR/ ALL), Angelika Markul (FR/POL), Bertrand Planes (FR), Koka RAMISHVILI (EST/GEO), Stéphane Thidet (FR) et Bernard VOITA (CH). For its first participation to PARÉIDOLIE, Laurence Bernard Gallery presents «No Man’s Land », a group show gathering recent artworks from three women - Caroline Corbasson (1989), Séverine Hubard (1977) et Angelika Markul (1977). Wax, charcoal and stencils with felt-pens are used by the artists. In comparing their shifted and chaotic views, damaged landscapes or conflicts between civilization and nature are being recalled. After studying visual arts and contemporary dance, they choosed to show the variety of medium in order to create a dialogue between the works. Maubert Gallery is always in search of young contemporary creation. Among these young artists, Sara Favriau had a personal exhibition of 500 m2 in the Palais de Tokyo (Paris) in February to May, 2016. In 2015, Gabrielle Conilh de Beyssac and Adrien Couvrat had respectively a show in the Musée Picasso and in the Institut du Monde Arabe (Paris). For these young artists, that the gallery had formerly discovered, the central question is about art history themes that become the foundations of our contemporary society : the perception, the study of forms, the material, the space, the traces and also relying on their researches on human and societal networks, architecture and landscape. The Gallery team is closed to these artists, intellectually, financially and moreover humanely during all the process of creation. For PARÉIDOLIE: Maubert Gallery proposes the work of visual artists Nicolas Muller (born in 1983) and Nicolas Daubannes (born in 1983). Coming from very different fields of drawing, those two artists meet in a way of exploring that medium, by the means of very strict creative processes, dealing both with freedom and constraint. Invited for a carte blanche in 2015 by the Château de Servières, PA / Plateforme de création contemporaine comes back to Marseille for the International Contemporary Drawing Fair PARÉIDOLIE, alongside three artists: Sandra Plantiveau, Emilie Benoist, and Ève Pietruschi. « The drawing, medium of predilection of the artist Sandra Plantiveau, including all its formal acceptance, here appears as a living matter, to become, between the document and the work of art, research and result. » — Anne-Lou Vicente EMILIE BENOIST Série Lumière blanche, 2013 Graphite sur papier, 50x65 Courtesy Emilie Benoist SANDRA PLANTIVEAU sans titre 2016 Encre sur papier 224gr, 50x65 cm Courtesy Sandra Plantiveau PA I PLATEFORME DE CRÉATION CONTEMPORAINE 6, rue Yvon Villarceau 75116 Paris FRANCE T: +33 (0) 6 03 25 49 49 [email protected] www.papel-art.com « Thanks to the medium of photography, Ève Pietruschi deducts abandoned pieces of urbanity or rurality : forgotten greenhouse, abandoned factories and sheds, neglected or deserted landscapes. She paces the streets, or rather the trails looking for fallow territories either natural, agricultural or industrial. The canvass, the walk conditions her gait. » — Rebecca François « In her early work, Emilie Benoist was fascinated by ethnology. She was obsessed with La Pensée Saudade from Lévi-Strauss. Then, she got interested by science and its effects on the world et environment, by the degeneration of cells of the human body or by some organs like the Cellular Phantastica, known for being the place of our imaginary. Gradually and empirically, her preoccupations went from science to belief, maybe to alchemy, and have led her to deploy a special fervor in her work, a very strong consciousness beyond the world. » — Anaël Pigeat GALERIE CATHERINE PUTMAN PARIS - FRANCE FREDERIC MALETTE KEITA MORI CARMEN PERRIN The gallery Catherine Putman, specialized in works on paper by contemporary artists, chose to present works by three artists, having each their universe, but for whom the practice of the drawing is characterized by an investment of the body, a physical and gestural presence. Frédéric Malette has a strong drawing. His obvious academic quality is disrupted : erased, rubbed out, blackened, sometimes enhanced with very expressive almost childlike lines . He works on our colonial history, the origins of our Mediterranean classical culture, questioning alterity and identity. Keita Mori draws with cotton and silk threads fixed with a glue gun. His compositions develop across a paper sheet, a wall or a whole room. He creates spaces by the accumulation and the tangle of the threads: systems in which cracks reveal fragmented spaces, in movement. Carmen Perrin, who occupied a studio in Marseille for 10 years, stood out as sculptor. In her practice of the drawing she uses the paper as a full material. She works in tension, by following the rhythm of her breath or the movement of a machine, by revealing the space, void and full, by the perforation. Many young artists have been selected but so have some more traditional ones such as Joan Hernández Pijuan, Giorgio Griffa and Susana Solano. Even though colour is our main focus, we do enjoy introducing elements of imperfection and playfulness to the gallery. And in contrast to this, we also include pieces that play with our fascination with light and space. But most of all we like being surprised by striking works and welcome those that fit our personal criteria. Solo Project Sabine Finkenauer (Rockenhausen, Germany, 1961) Sabine Finkenauer presents at PARÉIDOLIE an installation entitled “Wastepaper Basket Cuttings” made from cut up pieces of paper. This installation is bursting with primary colours, evoking the wastefulness of today’s society so accustomed to casting aside objects, feelings and people. In short, Sabine Finkenauer invites us to delve into an ephemeral and everyday world using a combination of simple and fragile materials. SABINE FINKENAUER. Whether outstanding (Françoise Pétrovitch, Ernest T.) or young artists (Amélie Bertrand, Laurent Le Deunff, documentation céline duval, Hippolyte Hentgen, Julien Tiberi) can be showed along with historical (Présence Panchounette et André Raffray) and international figures (Piero Gilardi, Steve Gianakos). The artists of the gallery have created strong links with Institutions and public collections as they are regularly exposed and collected. In almost ten years Semiose Gallery have always promoted a taste based aesthetics, leading thus on the question of cultural hierarchy. This name has never been anything other than a piece of fiction; this is not an author speaking but rather his fictional double. Their research is principally centred on drawing and images but has also branched out to include a variety of other media : writing, theatre, dance, comic strips, music... This four handed exercise endeavours to depict a kind of blind spot within contemporary culture, somewhere between the intimate and the specific. It allies unconscious visions with productivity requirements as well as with the distortion of their happily assumed borrowings with their own innate documentary aspect, forming what are finally just traces of reality. These sets of drawings (The Documents series and the Résistantes series) form a sort of methodological inventory. The oeuvres bring into play sampling and archetypes from the field of drawing in terms of its reproduction. The variety of media, the use of the wear and tear of the images, the different technical procedures, the means of integration, can all conceivably form the subject of the work or equally just appear as simple vignettes or perhaps even patterns. These oeuvres have been exhibited as part of the Hors Pistes festival at the Pompidou Centre in Paris and at the artists’ ‘solo’ exhibition at the Musée de L’Abbaye de Sainte-Croix in Sables d’Olonne last Autumn. VIDEOGRAPHIC DRAWING LEA BISMUTH PROGRAMMING VIDÉO ROOM BRUMES A tale of today in seven parts Curator: Léa Bismuth With the works of: Juliette Agnel, Hicham Berrada, Anaïs Boudot, Charlotte Charbonnel, Jennifer Douzenel, Caroline Duchâtelet, Elise Vandewalle. The mist is a light fog, slowly falling into shadows. We can compare it to the sfumato of the painter who creates, with his pencil, a delicate shade in order to reveal all the beauty of a smile or a glance. The camera can also capture the mist of the landscapes. And this is where our story begins : with the birth of a cinematic eye, what the Romantics used to call « the sublime ». It opens with a cloudy sky, sometimes obscured by the clouds, sometimes very luminous. Contemplation and great patience will be required. We now need to lift the veil on a sea of clouds, or a sea smoke announcing the marriage of heaven and earth. But later, something will be brewed under the surface. It will emerge from the depths of a volcano, just before the main explosion, the climax of this trip. The smoke explosion will fall into delicate fumaroles. Here is a poetic moment, passing from one state to another. From day to night. Eclipse or dusk. LÉA BISMUTH CAROLINE DUCHâTELET 4 Novembre 2011 Vidéo Courtesy the artist ILANA SALAMA ORTAR GUEST ARTIST Ilana Salama Ortar was born in Alexandria, Egypt. In the early 1950s her family was forced to leave Egypt with a one-way pass (laissez-passer). En route to Israel they passed through a transit camp known as the camp of the Jews. The fact of having been expelled from her home town, in addition to her family’s ancestral heritage - offspring of Spain’s expelled Jews who then wandered across Europe via Hebron (Palestine) before reaching Alexandria - she has a sharpened sensitivity towards issues of forced Displacement, in terms of Uprooting, Refugeeism, Immigration & Exile. Her art projects (Civic Performance Art) are intercultural performative installations that focus on transition, migration, mobility, and memory, particularly concerning zones of conflict (warzones, occupied territories, or the ghettoisation of segments of populations living in suburbs), and their consequences for individuals and groups, cities, and landscapes. Those art projects consist of encounters with the public, participatory video & sound installations, drawings, paintings, photograms, documentary films, stage design models and architectural structures. The artist has extensive experience in exhibiting and publishing on this topic. She has exhibited in New York (The Drawing Centre), Paris (École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris), Marseille (European Capital of Culture, MP13; ESADMM, École supérieure d’art & design), Lyon (Biennial of contemporary art), Jerusalem (solo exhibition at Israel Museum) and Tel Aviv (solo exhibition at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art) amongst others. Her research monograph The Camp of the Jews, is about art, culture, memorial heritage and Civic Performance Art. Her works have a place in the public collections of multiple museums: the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NY); Guggenheim Museum of Art (NY); Brooklyn Museum of Art (NY); Philadelphia Museum of Art; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (Texas); Bibliotheque nationale, (Paris); Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam); Den Haag Gemeente Museum, The Hague; The Israel Museum (Jerusalem) and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. Berlin Diary (Photograms). The writings we find in Urban Traces – Illana Salama Ortar’s intimate notebook –continue the accounts she has made whilst exploring cities, this time Berlin. The writings of the notebook, as well as her drawings since 1987, provide a form of mental and linguistic grounding for the artist. She explores, collects, and then acts on a daily basis by creating fragmented representations which emerge as relics; drawings which take from, or undo, the thread of the original frames. Jacques Derrida wrote: I already admired, as I told you, your first Urban Traces. Today, I stand riveted before this new series. Riveted before its movement, yet carried away motionlessly in the whirlwind of the melodic cell (a sort of Zim-Zum that engenders, layer upon layer, nothing more than its own archive, not its memory, but the archival trace of its erasure). What is extraordinary is that these drawings are not inscribed on – or not erased from – the substrate, the supporting surface. Rather they emerge from the substrate itself, from its most intimate seismic tremor. ILANA SALAMA ORTAR Berlin Diary, 2012-13 Photogramme, 24 X 17. 5 Cm (Présenté à l’exposition individuelle au Musée de Tel-Aviv, 2013-2014) The photogram involves working directly on paper, and on the image in the dark room - which becomes an experimental laboratory. The combination of acid and light reacts on the photographic paper, each page becoming a unique piece which sees a recasting of the graphic images in Urban Traces: reproduced in black and white negatives; drawings carried out directly onto the new layers. The process accentuates their very value as images, and returns the images to the artist - a new exuberance to their imaginary function. CARTES BLANCHES CARTE BLANCHE GALERIE TERRITOIRES PARTAGÉS - MARSEILLE JEAN - BAPTISTE GANNE The TERRITOIRES PARTAGES gallery leads since 2005 a project of production and sharing the works of artists living in Marseille and the PACA (Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur) Region with the objective to support an artistic emergence on this territory and to allow a wider distribution by crossing the regional border via Turin, the capital of Piemont. Artccessible-territoires-partages.blogspot.fr www.facebook.com/galerie.territoires Jean-Baptiste Ganne’s artistic practice can’t be defined in a single word because not only the artist handles more than a tool : painting, photography, installation, video, performance, but also because his work opens to numerous domains of the human praxis. Deliberately focused on the social and politics, and rich in a reflexion which went deeper thanks to many readings, the work of Ganne builds itself in a narrow relationship with contemporary urban culture. Fine observer of gestures, words, tracks collected throughout his daily progresses, the artist knows how to restore a new and transfigured sense to the elements he caught. In the wear which affects so much our look so heavily requested, Ganne brings into conflict an invigorating review, which a new and original practice of the transfiguration makes very efficient. He also puts out often mechanical systems (although narrative as culturally referenced) that transform, reflect or diffuse, if not all at once. The disappearance of industry and machines - one that was born the metal rock, techno and noise - seems to haunt the work of Thierry Liegeois. The association voyons voir / art contemporain et territoire develops a network of artists in residence and visual artworks’ production programs in the whole PACA regional territory. The aim of this network is to link remarkable heritage places and natural sites with vineyards, environment and mankind, through contemporary artworks. The association gives the possibility to artists to take over the site in all its various extents, using the site like a tool. It gives them the necessary conditions to create original pieces of art, which acts in harmony with the natural sites and makes the public able to interact with them. SEASON OF DRAWING EXODUS #2016 ANNE GOYER THE CENTRE D’ARTS FERNAND LÉGER was inaugurated on October 6th 2012 in the old house where Saint Gobain Factory directors used to live. It was created to promote Arts in three ways : diffusion with temporary exhibitions all over the year, teaching through its nondegree art school, which is open to anybody, and contemporary creation promoting with periodic artist-residencies. EXHIBITION FROM 16 SEPTEMBER TO 21 OCTOBER 2016 PREVIEW ON THURSDAY 15 SEPTEMBER AT 6.30PM This exhibition will be the result of Anne Goyer’s residency (2014 - 2016). During that time, she completely got involved in Port de Bouc memories, staring at the Exodus episode with her own look. Thus the Centre d’Arts displays large size drawings, immortal survivors portraits, witnesses or actors in History, in association with an installation of preparatory studies, sound samples, videos and some works made in collaboration with the city’s high school students. Anne Goyer’s favorite mode of expression is the portrait, mirror of the soul if any, in which she breathes an intriguing, hypnotic monumentalism that increases the evanescence and contrasts of industrial materials as asphalt. Through those anonymous or celebrities’ look, she reveals a part of herself, as an internal fire she spreads out. Her knowledge in fresco, icon and advanced color techniques (she got taught by Jean-Claude Gerodez, Claude Yvel, Jean-Baptiste Garricou, Solène Delahousse, Ckhra-CNRS school; Medal of Honor in 2009 for the 18th International Arts competition Lopez Villaseñor, presentation of her research on March 31th 2016, for the symposium “Paper : is it color-proof?“ in the Museum d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris), in association with her passion for urban artistic experiments, as Ernest Pignon-Ernest or George Rousse, lead her to rather consider her artistic work at a city-size scale. During MarseilleProvence 2013, she saw herself ordered a portrait of Nana, Marseille’s oldest fishmonger, on a 1m2 cobblestones space, after conceiving a giant back drop for the Festival d’Avignon. Thus, Anne Goyer does not approach her art without its humanist dimension anymore, a path she walks deeper with the Exodus project in Port de Bouc. It raises from her works timelessness carrying life and the streets atmosphere, ephemeral print of our contemporary civilisations. Exhibition within the framework of the Drawing Season presented by PARÉIDOLIE, the International Contemporary Drawing Fair. Joint partnership with Marseille-Expos / Château de Servières / PARÉIDOLIE. Based in Châteauneuf le Rouge, on the 2nd floor of a 18th-century building, just above the City Hall, the Contemporary Art Museum ARTEUM presents three to four exhibitions per year and develops distribution and support to Contermpory Art creation as well as to the young generation artists, devotes a special attention to making art accessible to everyone, by a mediation adapted to each and every public. Lionel Sabatté accepted the proposal from ARTEUM to ponder over the space in drawing. Finding his inspiration in the typical elements of the area around Aix, he offers a dialogue between the latter and the surroundings’ landscapes, the Sainte Victoire Mountain and the Montaiguet. Burnt wood gleaned in nature and vestiges of fires having ravaged the area take form and function on a different scale which underline the relationship between the outdoor landscape and the reliefs displayed by the raw material. The relationship is even more striking because of the little figures made out of dead skins and nails. The artist seizes the carbonized branches and realizes a series of large-format drawings of undergrowth and animals, in an atmosphere of strangeness and mystery which lives in its work, merging the vegetable and the animal world. The idea of revival and the transformation operates in the work of Lionel Sabatté by playing with dead materials, to divert them and finally give them life in return. Its work entertains a dialogue with the local environment and a strong relationship with the Art History, collecting the inspiration from the landscapes’ tradition in German Romanticism and the Taoist paintings. Renovated in the XVIIIth century, it was originally built in the XVIIth century. Since 1993, this place has two missions : as a contemporary cultural art center its task is to maintain the link with the living artistic creation by programming exhibitions and producing works of art; the second is based on relaying contemporary art by all means of education, diffusion and edition in order to show the variety and richness of today’s artistic scene. The space of drawing From floor to ceiling, the drawing is invited to establish a link with the intimacy of the place. Ephemeral drawings, installations, drawing like a skin will come and cover the curved lines of the art center. How do they consider drawing today ? Is this medium still so important for them, and what is the meaning of this pratctice ? How did they go on with c-drawing ? Did they cahnge their way of drawing ?...this exhibition at the Arthotèque will be, in a way, an answer to all these questions. SEASON OF DRAWING TIME FOR DRAWING - SEASON 4 CHATEAU DE SERVIERES - MARSEILLE Collective exhibition: Joseph Dadoune – Véronique Duplan – Julien Levy – Yves Schemoul – Marine Pagès et Yoann Ximenes EXHIBITION FROM 15 OCTOBER TO 17 DECEMBER 2016 PREVIEW ON FRIDAY 14 OCTOBER AT 6.30PM This exhibition is part of a program developped all over the Aix-Marseille Provence metropole territory, between the Fernand Leger Art Center in Port-de-Bouc, the Estrine Museum in St Rémy de Provence, the art center of Istres, le city art center Les Pénitents Noirs in Aubagne and the Château de Servières in Marseille. Beside this programm an edition of five booklets, one on each exhibition will be published. For this fourth opus of the « Season of drawing » the Château de Servieres will present six artists working on the idea of the « territory », in a mental as well as sociological aspect. For Yoann XIMENEZ the border, in its geopolitical meaning, is central to his digital works, as well as for Joseph DADOUNE whose questionning about the social distribution is transcended on a cosmological plan through the traditional solar calendar filter. In the same way, Marine PAGES explores the solar system in her late sery of drawings, inspired by the monuments of JANTAR MANTAR (India) with its observatory instruments full of ramps, stairs and grandstands alowing her to play with various perspectives and variable sizes, as far as the not visible... Veronique DUPLAN considers territory as a matter of fact , through her very delicate line drawing, just like engraving which she long practised. For Yves SCHEMOUL and Julien LEVY, we speak about intimate territories, in a sensitive and sensual way, leading to the fancy spaces of autofiction.
