Drinking Water Quality at GIS
Dear GIS Parents and School Community,
The quality of our drinking water at GIS is very important. As elevated lead levels in the water at various
schools throughout the United States have been widely reported, the Administration and the Board
decided to retest the drinking water at GIS in order to ensure that it meets and exceeds the applicable
quality standards, in particular when it comes to lead.
We are happy to report that the tests confirm that our drinking water greatly exceeds applicable quality
requirements and that the testing has given us an opportunity to improve even further on our overall
excellent results.
Tests covering drinking fountains, kitchen sinks, bathroom sinks and classroom sinks were conducted at
different times during and after the past spring break. The standard testing methodology is to take a
“first draw” sample (water that has been undisturbed for at least 6 hours) followed by a “flushed”
sample.
All “flushed” samples returned excellent results that were fully compliant with applicable regulations.
“First draw” tests likewise showed very low levels of lead except for two faucets with somewhat
elevated lead levels. Our “first draw samples” were taken at a time when the water had been lying in
the pipes undisturbed substantially longer than the 6 hours required by the testing procedure, possibly
resulting in higher concentrations of lead and other metals that were tested for.
In order to have the same great water uniformly throughout the school, and regardless of its source, the
school replaced the two fixtures showing elevated lead levels. Retesting yielded the very high quality in
the drinking water that GIS aims to provide to its students and everyone else in the school community.

Die Trinkwasserqualität an der GIS
Liebe GIS Eltern und Schulgemeinschaft,
die Qualität unseres Trinkwassers an der GIS ist sehr wichtig. Nachdem über erhöhten Bleigehalt an
verschiedenen Schulen in den USA berichtet worden ist, haben die Verwaltung und der Vorstand
entschieden, das Trinkwasser an der GIS erneut testen zu lassen. So soll sichergestellt werden, dass das
Trinkwasser den Qualitätsstandards und -anforderungen entspricht und sie sogar übertrifft,
insbesondere wenn es um Blei geht.

Wir freuen uns, Ihnen mitteilen zu können, dass die Qualität unseres Trinkwassers den gesetzlichen
Anforderungen bei Weitem übertrifft. Weiterhin haben wir die Testaktivitäten zum Anlass genommen,
durch geziehlte Maßnahmen die bereits ausgezeichnete Wasserqualität noch weiter zu verbessern.
Wasserproben sind während verschiedener Zeiten in und nach den Osterferien von Trinkbrunnen,
Küchenspülen, Waschbecken in den Badezimmern und Klassenzimmern entnommen worden. Die
Standardmethode ist, eine „Stagnationsprobe“ (Wasser von einem Wasserhahn zu nehmen, das
mindestens 6 Stunden lang nicht benutzt worden ist) zu entnehmen. Anschließend wird eine „Spülprobe“
entnommen.
Alle „Spülproben” zeigten hervorragende Ergebnisse, die allen Vorschriften entsprachen. Die
„Stagnationsproben” hatten einen sehr niedrigen Bleigehalt mit Ausnahme von zwei Wasserhähnen, die
einen etwas erhöhten Bleigehalt zeigten. Unsere „Stagnationsproben“ sind zu einem Zeitpunkt
entnommen worden, bei dem das Wasser viel länger in den Röhren ungestört gelegen hat, als es für
diese Methode erforderlich ist. Dies hat möglicherweise zu erhöhten Niveaus des Bleigehalts sowie von
anderen überprüften Metallen geführt.
Um die gleiche Wasserqualität konstant und gleichmäßig in der ganzen Schule anbieten zu können, egal
wo sie entnommen wird, hat die Schule die zwei Vorrichtungen, die einen erhöhten Bleigehalt zeigten,
ersetzt. Erneute Proben ergaben die sehr hohe Qualität des Trinkwassers, die GIS ihren Schülern und
allen Mitgliedern der Schulgemeinschaft zur Verfügung stellen möchte.

Sprint to Flint was the last race of the season! We had a
wonderful turnout, amazing weather, lots of fun, and
many winners. Congratulations to the 5K runners:
Theresa Studt (1st in her age division: 26:53), Patrick Baur
(3rd in his age division: 24:08), Lennart Lehmitz (2nd in his
division: 24:05), and Teresa Daehne (3rd in her age
division: 30:10). Congratulations to the 1 mile runners:
Ava Hoffmeister, Helen Halvorson, Cara Lehmitz, Zoe
Wasmund, and Johanna Studt. Special recognition to
Nicolas Rueda for completing his first 5K!
