The Biking Trend Continues to Strengthen Information from
the ZIV on the First Half of 2012
Press
Release
ZWEIRAD-INDUSTRIE-VERBAND
E. V. (The German Bicycle
Industry Association)
Despite slight weather-related declines in sales in the
cycling months from April to June 2012, millions of
people ride bicycles in Germany every day, and their
numbers are growing. Bike riding is all the rage!
However, the fickle spring weather in the first half of 2012 led
to a slight decline in domestic deliveries, i.e. in the number of
units delivered by manufacturers to dealers. Between
January and June 2012, 2.93 million bicycles and e-bikes
were delivered to dealers in Germany. This reflects a decline
of about 2.1 percent.
The Zweirad-Industrie-Verband (ZIV), Germany’s bicycle
industry association, believes that the less-than-ideal weather
conditions in Germany this year also led to a decline in sales.
ZIV estimates place this decline at between 3 and 5 percent.
The pleasant, summer-like weather in place since July, and
the positive consumer climate in Germany that persists
despite the euro crisis, are reason for hope that the second

half of the year will turn out more positively.
Quality German-made bicycles continue to be in demand, as
new increases in exports make clear. Exports increased to
approx. 708,000 units in the first half of the year, an increase
of about 6 percent over the same time last year. The most
important export markets were the Netherlands, France,
Austria and Poland.
The increasing importance of bicycles and e-bikes is
supported by many indicators.
The number of bicycle and e-bike units produced in Germany
was about 1.7 million, a mild decline of 2.3 percent.
Furthermore, in the first half of 2012, just about 1.95 million
bicycles and e-bikes were imported into Germany, a 0.84
percent increase year over year. The most important sources
of imports were Cambodia and Poland, as well as Taiwan
and Lithuania.
E-bikes continue to ride an upward trend.
After 310,000 units were sold in 2011, the ZIV estimates that
about 400,000 could be sold in Germany in 2012.
The ZIV expects that the German e-bike market can reach a
share of about 15 percent of the annual bicycle market over
the intermediate term. In unit terms, this would be the
equivalent to about 600,000 e-bikes. Because of changes in
usage patterns - particularly with respect to everyday mobility,
new suppliers joining the market, new model groups and
further technical development -, the ZIV considers this figure
to be quite realistic.

More than a million e-bikes are already in use on German
streets.
In addition to e-bikes, city and trekking bikes continue to be
the models most favored by German consumers.
Increased quality expectations on the part of consumers are
backed up by growth in the components and accessories
business.
The heavier use of bicycles in everyday life and the high
proportion of bicycles acquired from specialty retailers, a
situation which has existed for several years, have led to an
increased demand for components and accessories, as well
as for repair services provided by specialty retailers.
This is a particularly welcome development, as it shows that
the bicycle is assuming a more important role as a partner for
mobility.
For several years, the European associations COLIBI (the
bicycle industry) and COLIPED (the bicycle parts industry)
have collected statistics on the European bicycle industry,
which are published on the www.colibi.com and
www.coliped.com websites.
According to these statistics, the production of bicycles and
e-bikes in Europe declined in 2011 by about 4 percent. In
total, about 11.8 million e-bikes were produced in the 27 EU
member states. The most important producer countries are
Italy, Germany and the Netherlands.
Bicycle sales also declined slightly in 2011. According to the
European industry associations’ figures, sales were at about

20 million units, a decline of about 2 percent over 2010.
Germany is the most important bicycle market in Europe,
followed by the United Kingdom, France and Italy.
In the opinion of the ZIV, the bicycle is here to stay as a
mobility partner for the future. The visibility of bicycles on the
streets is increasing, which is due to an improved bicycle
infrastructure. Furthermore, the bicycle is currently in a
favorable situation, a convergence point of several future
megatrends. The bicycle and the e-bike tap into more key
themes of the future - such as health, mobility, sustainability
and economic efficiency - than any other method of
transportation.
This ZIV supports this development with its "Pro Fahrrad”
("Pro Bicycle”) initiative. By supporting and organizing various
events (e.g. serving as a partner of the German federal
government’s Open House initiative), actively participating in
the development and shaping of legal and technical
frameworks, and through active communications
management, the ZIV serves actively represents the interests
of the German bicycle and bicycle parts industry.
