German Geography Cookie Unit Haley Crittenden Gordon German Teacher Lee High School & Key Middle School (adapted from Angelika Becker) Goal Students will learn about the physical geography of Germany, including cities, rivers, mountain ranges, forests, etc. Students will be able to answer oral questions about German geography. Time & Class This unit can be used with level 1 or 2 students. It can also be adapted to work with upper level students to include geography of Austria and Switzerland. The unit can be conducted in 2 – 3 weeks. It works well with a block schedule; however, it can be adapted to traditional schedule, if the teacher schedules the groups to test on different days. Materials Teachers will need paper size blank maps of Germany. German wall map and individual small maps of Germany are recommended, as well as overheads of Germany. Day 1 1. Pre-teach geography vocabulary for rivers, mountains, cities, etc. Students must learn all geographical features on the vocabulary list for the “test”. 2. Students will color and label their own map of Germany. The student maps will serve as study notes for the test. 3. Students turn in study maps for a class work grade. Teacher must check maps for spelling & location accuracy. Daily – 2 – 3 Weeks 1. Students study individual maps of Germany to become familiar with German geography. 2. Students will practice locating geographical features on wall maps & overheads of Germany as a warm-up for every class before the “Oral Test”. 3. Teacher gives oral & written practice questions to students 1 Week Before Test 1. Students form groups of 4 – 5 students for the “Oral test”. 2. A student from each group volunteers to be the “baker” (for extra credit) for his/her group. Bake a large cookie in the shape of Germany at home. 3. Other group members volunteer to bring in different colored icing, drinks, cups & napkins. Test Day 1. On the test day the baker brings in the cookie on a cookie sheet. 2. The students must decorate their cookie to look like their individual student maps of Germany. Cookies are not labeled with words, only symbols. It is recommended to let students start decorating their maps right in the beginning of class, because this activity can take some time. Teachers may want to put a time limit on decorating, like 25 mins. Students may use their individual study maps only to help with decorating cookie. 4. When a group is finished decorating the cookie, they must take the oral test. Students must put away their individual maps of Germany. Teachers will quiz each student 5 questions orally with perhaps a bonus question. This oral test takes the longest, allow at least 45 mins. depending on the size of the class. 5. After the group has been tested, they may enjoy their cookie & drinks. 6. Allow plenty of time for class clean-up!
