Pursuing a Master’s degree at the HBK Braunschweig
means that you are deciding on an academic degree
course at an art academy. The focus of the involvement is contemporary art from various perspectives.
Admissions prerequisites
A completed course of study in the relevant subject
or a closely related one with a minimum grade of
2.5. The equivalence of foreign degrees will be determined in accordance with the evaluation recommendations of the »Zentralstelle für ausländisches
Bildungswesen« at the administrative office of the
Kultusministerkonferenz (www.anabin.de).
The previous course of study must be completed before starting the Master’s programme.

courses of study.

Aesthetics & Art History:
→ Cover letter in German of not more than 1 DIN A 4
page
→ CV
→ Proof of the grades of the fi nal paper or Bachelor
thesis
The allocation of the university places is based on an
average grade, 50% of which is determined by the
grade of the final paper or average grade and the final
paper or Bachelor thesis.
Communication Arts:
→ Portfolio with pertinent work samples from your
previous study and, if relevant, prior professional
experience. If available, please include a copy of
your fi nal paper and complete publications. Films
are to only be submitted in digital form
→ Written concept (max. 3000 characters) explaining
the reasons for selecting one of the three focuses
(Narrative Environments, Visual Argumentation,
Knowledge Communication) of the Communication Arts Master’s programme as well as the description of a possible subject for the Master’s thesis
→ CV
Media Studies:
→ Cover letter and two-page abstract on the fi nal paper of the first degree
→ CV
80% of the university places are allocated based on
the fi nal or average grade. A ranking will be set up.
In the case of an equal ranking, the ranking will be
determined based on the evaluation of the submitted
documents. 20% of the university places are allocated
based on a combination of the final or average grade,
the evaluation of the documents as well as the result
of a selection interview.
The assessment committee views the submitted applications documents and decides whether an invitation to a selection interview is to be extended. Only
those applicants will be invited to a selection interview who have the potential of demonstrating special
artistic talents in the selected study focus based on
the submitted application documents.
The criteria for this are especially the quality of the
portfolio with the samples of your work, practical
professional experience, study trips abroad as well
as the coherence of the submitted written concept
for the choice of the study course and the possible
theme of the Master’s thesis.
Industrial Design/Transportation Design:
→ Portfolio with pertinent samples of your work from
your previous course study and, if relevant, your
prior professional experience
→ Written concept (ca. 3000 characters) on the
choice of the Master’s degree course of study Industrial Design/Transportation Design, from which
it is evident what particularly interests you have in
the field of design or the emphasis on mobility and
what you would like to design, learn and explore
over the course of the four semesters

the submitted application documents.

Notes for foreign applicants
Education certifications
The equivalency of foreign education certifi cates will
be determined directly by the HBK Braunschweig. For
this, we require notarized copies of all your education certificates such as school-leaving and study certifi cates (in the original language and with a German
or English translation). The applications of interested
Chinese applicants will only be taken into consideration if the certifi cate of the »Akademische Prüfstelle« is enclosed (APS). The selection commission/
assessment committee decides based on the submitted portfolios or the written application documents
whether the course of study is academically equivalent.
Language proficiency
Good knowledge of German is a perquisite for an
active and successful course of study. Foreign applicants must submit the certificate confirming the passing of the »Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang ausländischer Studienbewerber (DSH)«
with the overall grade DSH-2- or the »Test Deutsch
als Fremdsprache für ausländische Studienbewerber
(TestDaF)« with a grade at least equivalent to TestDaF
level 4 in all four parts of the test.
The HBK Braunschweig itself does not offer language
courses. Please use the language offerings at the
Language Centre of the Technische Universität (TU)
Braunschweig.
