Hand an.
angebotenen integrierten Dienstleistungen einzigartig.

eHealth care system that autonomously detects elder people when they fall at home
Abstract:
A Spanish university developed a system that autonomously detects when a person fall using several
off-the-shelf cameras. It is focused to reduce the time of arrival of emergency services, triggering an
alarm (image or SMS). The system provides this service even when the people are unconscious and it
is built using cheap parts. The research group seeks partners in eHealth industry to implement this
technology through commercial agreements with technical assistance.
Description:
The system works with regular (and cheap) cameras, and it is based on advanced computer vision
techniques to continuously estimate the 3D position of the tracked person. It has three building blocks:
(1) image analysis, for people color learning and motion detectors;
(2) 3D estimation,
(3) Alarm configuration.
Innovative Aspects:
There are similar products for tele-assistance, which are based on necklaces with an emergency
button, that person is required to press in case of emergency. Such systems do not work properly
when the patient loses consciousness due to a faint.
The developed technology has been especially designed for such faint situations, as it is based on
image analysis and is completely autonomous. No action at all is required from the patient. In addition
it is non intrusive, as the person does not need to wear any gadget.
The system uses cameras, which are passive sensors, it does not require any actuation from the
patient. It is completely autonomous and non intrusive. In addition it is not an expensive system, which
benefits its marketing and sale. Regular and off the self cameras are enough for the proper operation
of the system.
The technology is able to recognise "danger zones" in the ambient of elder people, such as balconies
or electric plugs.

Microfluidics system for increasing biocompatibility structures
Abstract:
An Italian Research Centre has developed a novel Microfluidics system concerns handling and
manipulation of minute amounts of fluids; volumes thousands of times smaller than a common droplet
without any. This microfluidics devices are indifferently fabricated in Silicon, in polymeric materials,
Dry Film in SU8, and in Glass. We are able to use a PolySiC layer as a covering layer to increase the
structures biocompatibility.
Description:
The researchers have developed novel strategies to fabricate easily micro fluidic structures for several
application. In particular they are developing a integrated PCR in a microfluidic structures and
different system for biological material separation and system for the fabrication of polymeric fuel cell.
All this activities are developed using different approaches but the reduction in size is one of the most
important aspect. The fabrication of miniaturised version of conventional laboratory equipment such as
pumps, heaters, electrophoresis columns and valves is the basic approach to create a Laboratories
on-a-chip. In laboratory are present all the equipment for the fabrication of innovative system including
the deposition of SiC materials as a high resistant material to harsh environment and high
biocompatibility.
Innovative Aspects:
The innovation is based on fabbrication of microfluidics system using non conventional approach and
non conventional materials like as Silicon carbide and poly SiC.
Advanteages has been considered the SiC material which is completely inert substrate combined to
high biocompatibility.
Microfluidics means measuring in microliters, nanoliters or even picoliters. The microfluidics field lies
at the interfaces between biotechnology, medical industry, chemistry and MEMS (micro-electromechanical systems). In these markets, microfluidics is a popular research field, which includes study
of microfluidic possibilities

An Ambient Intelligence Based Multi-Agent System for Alzheimer Health Care
Abstract:
A Spanish university has developed a technology for the development of an ambient intelligence
based multi-agent for Alzheimer health care.
One of the most important characteristics is the use of intelligent agents as the main components in
employing a service oriented approach, focusing on distributing the majority of the systems
functionalities into remote and local services and applications.
The University is interested in license, technical cooperation and commercial agreements.
Description:
The importance of developing new and more reliable ways of providing care and support for the
elderly is under-scored by this trend, and the creation of secure, unobtrusive and adaptable
environments for monitoring and optimizing health care will become vital. Some authors consider that
tomorrow s health care institutions will be equipped with intelligent systems capable of interacting with
humans. Multi-agent systems and architectures based on intelligent devices have recently been
explored as supervision systems for medical care for dependent people. These intelligent systems aim
to support patients in all aspects of daily life, predicting potential hazardous situations and delivering
physical and cognitive support.
Ambient Intelligence based systems aim to improve quality of life, offering more efficient and easy
ways to use services and communication tools to interact with other people, systems and
environments. Among the general population, those most likely to benefit from the development of
these systems are the elderly and dependent persons, whose daily lives, with particular regard to
health care, will be most enhanced.
Agents and multi-agent systems in dependency environments are becoming a reality, especially in
health care. Most agent-based applications are related to the use of this technology in the monitoring
of patients, treatment supervision and data mining.
It is a distributed multi-agent system designed upon Ambient Intelligence and aimed at enhancing the
assistance and health care for Alzheimer patients living in geriatric residences. The main
functionalities in the system include reasoning and planning mechanisms that are embedded into
deliberative BDI (Believe Desire Intention) agents, and the use of several context-aware technologies
to acquire information from users and their environment. The main characteristics of the system are
described, followed by a description of the new system developed by means of the FUSION@
architecture. FUSION@ is a modular multi-agent architecture, where services and applications are
managed and controlled by deliberative BDI agents.
Its structure has five different deliberative agents based on the BDI model (BDI Agents), each one with
specific roles and capabilities:
User Agent. This agent manages the users personal data and behaviour (monitoring, location, daily
tasks, and anomalies). The User Agent beliefs and goals applied to every user depend on the plan or
plans defined by the super-users. User Agent maintains continuous communication with the rest of the
system agents, especially with the ScheduleUser Agent (through which the scheduled users can
communicate the result of their assigned tasks) and with the SuperUser Agent. The User Agent must
ensure that all the actions indicated by the SuperUser are carried out, and sends a copy of its memory

base (goals and plans) to the Admin Agent in order to maintain backups. There is one agent for each
patient registered in the system.
SuperUser Agent. This agent runs on mobile devices (PDA) and inserts new tasks into the Admin
Agent to be processed by a reasoning mechanism. It needs to interact with the User Agents to impose
new tasks and receive periodic reports, and with the ScheduleUser Agents to ascertain the evolution
of each plan. There is one SuperUser Agent for each doctor connected to the system.
ScheduleUser Agent. It is a BDI agent with a planning mechanism embedded in its structure. It
schedules the users daily activities and obtains dynamic plans depending on the tasks needed for
each user. It manages scheduled-users profiles (preferences, habits, holidays, etc.), tasks, available
time and resources. Every agent generates personalized plans depending on the scheduled-user
profile. There is one ScheduleUser Agent for each nurse connected to the system.
Admin Agent. It runs on a Workstation and plays two roles: the security role that monitors the users
location and physical building status (temperature, lights, alarms, etc.) through continuous
communication with the Devices Agent; and the manager role that handles the databases and the task
assignment. It must provide security for the users and ensure the efficiency of the tasks assignments.
There is just one Admin Agent running in the system.
Innovative Aspects:
This multi-agent system aimed at enhancing the assistance and health care for Alzheimer patients. It
takes advantage of the cooperation among autonomous agents and the use of context-aware
technologies providing a ubiquitous, non-invasive, high-level interaction among users, system and
environment.

Bioanalysis expertise in human health research studies and drug development
Abstract:
A UK analytical company provides expertise & analysis for clients related to human health research,
diagnosis and monitoring. With over 20 years experience they are one of the leading analytical
companies in support of health surveys, smoking cessation programmes, epidemiological studies,
novel drug development and the reformulation of existing drugs. The MHRA GLP/GCP accredited
company offers its expertise and facilities and is looking for technical cooperation with research
centres etc.
Description:
Today the majority of healthcare research requires the support of analytical assays. For many the
purchase of the sophisticated analytical equipment and the employment of the skilled staff and the
associated running costs is not a cost effective way to support individual research projects. The
added-value of experience and expertise required in the challenging analysis process (e.g. method
development, method transfer, sample analysis) is rather more difficult to access.
The UK analytical company has specialised in bioanalysis (quantifying analytes in biological fluids)
over the past thirty years. They believe this focus enables them to deliver an excellent customer
centred service at a competitive price. Their work has resulted in the publication of over 500 scientific
papers in peer reviewed journals as well as reports in numerous scientific TV programs, books etc. As
you would expect their staff are extremely skilled and innovative in developing, validating and
supporting quantitative measurements in biological matrices. They routinely apply existing analytical
methods or develop bespoke bioanalytical methods in partnership with their sponsors to satisfy
business needs.
Innovative Aspects:
The UK company has a wealth of experience, expertise and equipment in delivering cost-effective
results for clients in the crucial area of bioanalysis. For example they have many years experience of
assaying nicotine and cotinine in saliva, plasma and urine, and supported various studies investigating
smoking status and tobacco smoke exposure in adults and children. Their assay is sensitive enough
to give a measure of passive smoke exposure.
They have also established a strong reputation in the field of analytical support for the measurement
of drugs of abuse and provided all the pharmacokinetic data to support the development of cannabis
based medicines within the UK.
As you would expect from such a professional GLP/GCP accredited laboratory they supply sample
collection kits, have a variety of validated assays, store samples under closely monitored temperature
controlled environments and deliver automated reports as required.

Organs isolated perfusion technology
Abstract:
A Brussels-based company is pioneering the use of percutaneous organ isolation and perfusion
procedures in the emerging market of interventional oncology. The catheter based system enables a
temporary and complete separation of the liver from the systemic blood system and permits
administration of chemotherapy drugs at high concentrations directly into the isolated liver, under drug
optimized conditions without systemic side effects. Commercial agreement with technical assistance is
sought.
Description:
Administering drugs directly into an isolated closed organ permits local delivery of the optimal
pharmacological dose without exposing other organs to drug toxicity and provoking systemic side
effects. The lead product of the Brussels-based company is a Liver system. It is a set of catheterbased devices intended to be used in combination with physician selected chemotherapy drugs for the
treatment of cancer metastases in the liver. Currently, surgical resection is the only potentially curative
treatment available for patients with cancer metastases in the liver. However, it is only suitable for a
small number of patients due to the quantity, size or location of the metastases. Systemic, palliative
chemotherapy treatment is typically given to these patients. Because the drug is administered
systemically, it has a relatively low concentration in the liver, rendering it less effective. It is for these
patients that Liver system will offer a potentially new curative treatment option. The potential market
size for this product has been estimated by independent, outside consultants to be about 3 billion EUR
in US + Europe alone. The company is initially pursuing an open drug strategy i.e. the system can be
used with physician prescribed drugs. Later, device / drug combination products will be added through
partnerships with pharma companies. The company has established a Medical Advisory Committee
consisting of, amongst others, leading experts and opinion leaders in Gastro-Intestinal Oncology and
Interventional Radiology which help to direct the development of the system close to user' needs and
ahead of competitive developments. The system has received worldwide patent protection. The
system is developed and manufactured according to ISO norms certified facility in Brussels. The
system has successfully passed laboratory tests and in vivo animal trials. A first clinical trial bas been
started in 2010 and will lead to the obtention of the CE-mark during spring 2011.
Innovative Aspects:
This will be the first system available to isolate and perfuse a human organ with minimal invasive
procedures. There is no curative medical alternative available today.
The main advantages are the following:
-No side effects of the drugs: the system enables a circulation of the drugs in a closed circuit,
impacting directly the metastases and impeding the circulation of the chemical in the whole body
An increased clinicial efficency of the chemical product

PS: FP7-KBBE-2011-5-SME : SME sought for project under topic Processed foods with
lower salt, fat and sugar content
Abstract:
A french coordinator seeks SMEs for a FP7 project aiming at reducing the level of salt, sugar and fat
in selected cheese, meat, bread and ready-made food products (sauces) whilst maintaining nutritional
and sensorial qualities of these products to ensure full consumer acceptance. SMEs from the food
industry are sought for testing, application and demonstration activities.
Description:
Most developed country are confronted with a rising rate of pathologies such as obesity,
cardiovascular diseases, diabetes which are related to non well-balanced diets and excess of
consumption of fat, salt and low-size sugars. A significant reduction of these ingredients in food should
contribute both to save numerous lives and reduce healthcare costs. However, their multifunctionality
gives difficult qualitative and quantitative changes in their composition.
The aim of the project is to reduce the level of salt, sugar and fat in selected cheese, meat, bread and
ready-made food products (sauces) whilst maintaining nutritional and sensorial qualities of these
products to ensure full consumer acceptance. This will be done by fine-tuning current product
formulations by engineering the technological parameters of realistic food models specific to each
product. In parallel, micro- and microstructures of the new food matrices will be studied. To ensure the
sensorial feasibility of this re-engineering, sensorial analysis and optimisation to ensure consumer
acceptability will be carried out in parallel to these technological developments. Moreover, the
nutritional value of reformulated foods will be estimated compared to the non reformulated ones.
Beside technological aspects, more fundamental studies from selected models developed above will
be conducted to improve the understanding of the main mechanisms leading to perception. That
includes flavour release and temporal perception in relation with changes in composition of the
selected models with in vivo and in vitro approaches with predictive tools, and a cognitive approach
will be carried out as a promising lever to compensate salt, sugar and/or fat reduction. The findings will
be transferred to the reformulation actions to study the possibility to be introduced in the food process.
These new product formulations will be validated via extensive demonstration activities with several
SMEs for different European countries including a cost-benefit analysis in terms of industrial feasibility
and consumer acceptance on large populations.

Health care for women affected by violence in Austria
Type Details:
The Word Health Organization names violence against women as one of the top health risks for
women and girls. Although some activities have been launched the healthcare system in Austria still
does not adequately and consistently address affected women.
Some provinces like Styria, Lower Austria, Vienna and Tyrol started with training programs for health
professionals in hospitals or in educational institutions. In March 2010 the first national guideline
'Health care for women affected by violence - A guideline for hospitals and medical practice' was
launched by the Ministry of Economics, Family and Youth. The Women's Health Center is an active
member of a national group of women's activists from different sectors and professional backgrounds
lobbying for the implementation of this national guideline in all provinces.
Project: Health effects of violence against women
In 1997 experts in women's shelters developed the first Austrian curriculum 'Violence against Women'
to train health professionals in Lower Austria. Due to excellent evaluation results of these trainings, the
Women's Health Center in Graz transfered this model to Styria conducting a 15 month project in
cooperation with the Styrian Hospital Corporation of the public hospitals KAGes (from October 2007 to
December 2008). The training builds awareness on different forms of violence against women, short
and long term health effects and the importance of the health care system as the place to go for
affected women. Furthermore the participants learned about adequate intervention, documentation,
the legal background and outpatient women's shelters and service centers.
