Regisseur John Sullivan war Filmstudent am San Francisco Art Institute, der School of Visual Arts in New York
and in Rockport, Maine. Er hat als Regisseur und Drehbuchautor diverse Kurz-, Werbe- und Dokumentarfilme
realisiert und für das Fernsehen gearbeitet. Sein erster
Spielfilm „Play“ wurde im Juli 2003 uraufgeführt. Im
gleichen Jahr entstand in Afghanistan sein Dokumentarfilm „Home of the Brave – Land of the Free“, der in
Norwegen beim Nationalen Filmpreis als Bester Dokumentarfilm mit der Amanda ausgezeichnet wurde.
Director John Sullivan studied film at the San Francisco Art Institute, the School of Visual Arts (New York)
and in Rockport, Maine. His merits as director and
screenwriter so far consist of several documentaries,
shorts and commercials, music videos and drama for
TV. His first feature, "Play“, was released in July 2003.
His documentary film about Afghanistan, "Home of
the Brave – Land of the Free“ from 2003, received
the National Film Award Amanda for Best Documentary in 2004.

„Norwegian Hardcore“ steht auf den T-Shirts, die das „Team Rocco“ trägt, und diesen Schriftzug darf man getrost wörtlich verstehen. Denn der Chef und Namensgeber der filmenden Truppe, Thomas „Rocco“ Hansen, ist zwar erst 22 Jahre alt, aber schon der
bekannteste und erfolgreichste Pornofilmdarsteller und -produzent des Landes. Fast zwei Jahre lang hat der Dokumentarist John
Sullivan Rocco und seine Freundin Line mit der Kamera begleitet:
bei Filmaufnahmen in Nachtclubs und der eigenen Wohnung, auf
Casting-Touren, Partys und zu Interview-Terminen. Denn Rocco
Hansen besitzt in Norwegen Star-Appeal. Schüler und Schülerinnen, denen er eine Karriere verspricht, sehen in ihm einen Helden, womöglich sogar einen Rebellen gegen das Establishment.
Während Rocco Mädchenbusen signiert und in einer seriösen
Fernsehserie als „Gaststar“ auftritt, kommentiert Roccos Freundin das Geschehen auf der Leinwand rückblickend überraschend
nachdenklich – und macht so die Regeln des Gewerbes auch für
Außenstehende transparent.
‘Team Rocco’ wears t-shirts sporting the slogan ‘Norwegian Hardcore’, which is to be taken literally. At an age of merely 22, the
film group’s name-giver and boss, Thomas ‘Rocco’ Hansen, is
Norway’s best-known and most successful porno film actor and
producer. Over the course of almost two years, documentary
filmmaker John Sullivan accompanied Rocco and his girlfriend
Line with a camera: at film shoots in nightclubs and their own
flat, on casting tours, at parties and interview dates. In Norway
Rocco Hansen has star-appeal. He offers schoolboys and –girls
the opportunity of a career and they see him as a hero, maybe
even as a rebel against the establishment. While Rocco is shown
autographing girls’ breasts and making a 'guest appearance’ in
a respectable TV series, his girlfriend looks back in a surprisingly reflective voiceover commentary that makes the rules of the
business transparent even to outsiders.
