The birthday present
Read the text. Use your dictionary for help.
Lilly is so happy. It’s her seventh birthday today. When she gets home from school
there are pink and white balloons on the letter box. And there is a big sign, “Happy
birthday, Lilly!” at the fence, too.
Her brother, who is thirteen years old, meets her at the letter box.
“We are playing a birthday game, before the guests arrive for the party!” he says.
“You have to find your presents. Here is your first clue.” Lilly reads the note carefully.
It’s great that she has learned to read at school this year.
“Clue number 1: Look inside the letter box.” So she looks inside the letter box. She
finds a dog bone with another note. “Clue number 2: Look inside mum’s car.” So Lilly
looks inside the car. There is a bag of dog food with another note.
“Clue number 3: Look at the back door inside the house.” So Lilly goes to the back
door and there is a dog’s leash.
“Hmmm,” she thinks. “A dog bone, dog food, and a dog’s leash…but we don’t have
a dog.” The note on the leash says to go to the garden. So Lilly does and do you
know what she sees - a red doghouse! She walks to the doghouse, but before she
gets there a little brown puppy runs up to her. It has a note on it. The note says,
“Happy birthday, Lilly.”
“Oh, a puppy!” she cries. “This is the best birthday ever!”
