Latest surveys confirm that mobile phones have become one of the most popular leisure activities among teenagers nowadays. However, not only young people are fascinated by the modern device which has revolutionized communication enormously. So it is not surprising that mobile phones are used by almost 40% of the 5 world population these days. To understand the increasing interest of people in telecommunications we have to go back to the roots. Alexander Graham Bell was the first to patent the telephone, an apparatus for transmitting vocal or other sounds telegraphically. The first successful bi-directional transmission of clear speech by Bell and his assistant Watson was 10 made on 10 March 1876 when Bell spoke into his device, “Mr. Watson, come here. I want to see you,” and Watson answered. Later the first telephone system, which is a practical means of communicating between many people who have telephones, was installed in Hartford, Connecticut in 1877. Manual switchboards remained in common use until the middle of the twentieth century although the first automatic 15 telephone system had already been set up in 1892. Finally, the first mobile telephone was invented by Bell Telephone Company and fitted into New York City police cars in 1924. Telephone technology has certainly come a long way since then. Up to now probably no means of communication has altered the daily lives of ordinary people 20 more than the modern mobile telephone. The number of young people using and relying on mobile phones is rising dramatically. Nine in ten British twelve-year-olds have their own, for instance. Mobiles have developed into a fashion symbol and they reflect the owner’s personality. According to a survey teenagers mostly need their mobiles to text friends and fix meetings. Above all it has become an object which 25 they can use for creating social circles apart from their families. They prefer texting – which is between calling and sending an e-mail – to writing letters because it is less time consuming. In the end young people even develop their own very private written language. That has given them the opportunity to hide out in the open. They are more connected than ever, but also far more independent. Seite 2 von 10 SCHRIFTLICHE ABSCHLUSSPRÜFUNG 2010 REALSCHULABSCHLUSS 30 ENGLISCH These trends are likely to continue as creators of mobile phones change these objects into hand-held computers. Every year there are new creations on the market; for instance, one company introduced a mobile phone for pre-school children with a small keypad with two speed dial buttons showing an image of a mother and a father. The parents’ ability to reach their children whenever they want gives the families 35 more pluses than minuses. When parents are divorced it is easier for them to reach their children even if they live in different time zones. On the other hand there are certain disadvantages of using mobiles especially concerning health, safety and social behaviour. Mobiles can be a danger while driving a car, riding a bicycle or sitting in a plane. Of course, everybody knows the 40 situation in bars, restaurants, cinemas or even in church where the sound of a mobile phone can be disturbing. Certainly present discussions about the use of mobiles will not stop very quickly. adapted from: http://news.bbc.co.uk http://en.wikipedia.org http://www.ideafinder.com http://sln.fi.edu “Mobile Phones Become a Social Network for Youth”, New York Times – May 2008 Seite 3 von 10 SCHRIFTLICHE ABSCHLUSSPRÜFUNG 2010 REALSCHULABSCHLUSS I.1 ENGLISCH Multiple choice Choose the heading which corresponds most closely with the meaning of the whole text.
