Holiday itinerary
A friend of yours wants to go to Germany for a week’s holiday this July. She would like to do
the following:

see at least one historical town;

visit a museum;

do some wine-tasting;

go on day’s boat trip on a river.
Where should she go?
She has asked you to come up with some ideas for her trip. Put together a rough itinerary in
English, with the destinations inserted in an order that makes sense – don’t make her
repeatedly cross the entire country to get to her various destinations!
WHY are the places you picked worth a visit? In a separate short paragraph below your
itinerary, include descriptions (approximately 50-60 words) of each place in the itinerary.
Write a total of about 250 words IN ENGLISH.

Volkmar and Vera Kruger are a couple in their early 50s.
“[They] aren't retired or well off. They live in a small Tudor-style house in this middle-class
town about 30 miles northwest of Frankfurt. He's a foreman at a glass factory; she works
part time for a company that tracks inventories for retailers. Their combined income is a
modest $40,000.
Yet the Krugers have a higher standard of living than many Americans who have twice that
income.”1
How is this possible – and could the same be said of the German standard of living versus
that of the Irish?

Birkenstock
1774 gründete der Schuhmachermeister Johann Adam Birkenstock die „Schuhmacherdynastie“
Birkenstock. Birkenstock ist eine international erkennbare Schuhmarke und ist ein
Familienunternehmen seit 230 Jahren. Insider schätzten den Umsatz von Birkenstock über die
500-Millionen-Euro-Grenze. Das Großunternehmen vertreibt etwa zwölf Millionen Paar Sandalen
pro Jahr auf allen Kontinenten der Welt. Seit den 1990er Jahren ist der Hauptsitz von Birkenstock
Vettelschoß in Rheinland-Pfalz.
1896 eröffnete Konrad Birkenstock, der Enkelsohn von Johann Adam Birkenstock, in Frankfurt am
Main zwei Schuhfachgeschäfte, die Fußbetteinlagen2 für Schuhe produzierten und verkauften.
1925 baute Konrad Birkenstock eine neue Fabrik, die das ‘Blaue Fußbett’ in großen Mengen
produzierte. Das ‘Blaue Fußbett’ ist eine Fußbetteinlage, die den Bewegungen und der Fußform
des Trägers anpasst.
Ein Enkelsohn von Konrad Birkenstock, Carl Birkenstock, kam ca. 1945 auf die Idee, die flexible
Korkeinlage3 zur festen Innensohle von Schuhen zu machen. So entwickelte sich das Birkenstock
Unternehmen weiter. 1964 kam das erste Modell der „Birkenstocksandale“ auf den Markt und
legte damit den Grundstein für die enorme Expansion des Unternehmens seit den 1970er Jahren.
Ende der 1960er Jahren entdeckte auch die Hippiebewegung in den USA die Sandalen und diese
Sandalen wurden sehr populär. So entstand die amerikanische Filiale Birkenstock USA.
Der globale Birkenstock-Markt wuchs ständig in den 80er und 90er Jahren. Ganze
Berufsgruppen, die viel laufen oder stehen mussten (wie das Personal von Krankenhäusern oder
im Hotellerie- und Gaststättengewerbe) entdeckten die Bequemlichkeit von Birkenstocksandalen.
Dann fingen Experten in Pflegeberufen wie z.B. Ärzte und Chiropraktiker an, die
Birkenstocksandalen zu empfehlen.
Heute sind Birkenstock Sandalen noch sehr beliebt durch die ganze Welt.

Was machst Du im Moment? Studierst du? Wie geht’s Deiner Familie? Ich habe übrigens
jetzt einen Freund! Er heißt Jan und ist 22. Ich habe ihn letzten Oktober im
Sprachunterricht kennen gelernt.
Ich war letzten Sommer in Ungarn – das war schön. Ich habe viele Museen besucht und
