Zur Theorie der
P e r s ö n l i c h k e i t i n der DDR.

Lemke u n t e r t e i l t die Diskussion um eine s o z i a l i s t i s c h e
Persönlichkeit folgendermaßen ein:
s i e entwickelt s i c h
durch die Phase einer a n f ä n g l i c h e n systematischen
Diskussion der Psychologie i n der DDR ab 1958 -- die
Phase des "umfassenden Aufbaus des Sozialismus" ab 1963
-- die der widerspruchsvolleren P e r s ö n l i c h k e i t s t h e o r i e n
i n der Z e i t nach dem V I I I . P a r t e i t a g der SED
1971.
In Lemkes P e r i o d i s i e r u n g werden diese Schwerpunkte i n
enge Beziehung zu s o z i a l e n , ö k o n o m i s c h e n und p o l i t i s c h e n
V e r ä n d e r u n g e n g e s t e l l t . G r o ß e Aufmerksamkeit wird der
Definierung der " a l l s e i t i g e n t w i c k e l t e n , s o z i a l i s t i s c h e n
P e r s ö n l i c h k e i t " a l s Z i e l des Gesellschaftssystems
geschenkt. Pas S e l b s t v e r s t ä n d n i s der DDR wird an der
R e a l i t ä t g e p r ü f t sowie h i n s i c h t l i c h eines F o r t s c h r i t t s ,
Hen es i n der Diskussion um eine marxistische Theorie
der P e r s ö n l i c h k e i t bringen kann. Obwohl der B e g r i f f e i n
b r e i t e s Spektrum von F ä h i g k e i t e n e i n s c h l i e ß e n s o l l ,
l ä u f t die Forschung Gefahr, die p e r s ö n l i c h e E n t f a l t u n g
zu sehr den momentanen w i r t s c h a f t l i c h e n E r f o r d e r n i s s e n
anzupassen. T a t s ä c h l i c h s t e i g e r t s i c h die wissenschaftl i c h e F r a g e s t e l l u n g i n der DDR von "Was für P e r s ö n l i c h keiten werden im Sozialismus gebraucht?" zu "Wie wird
dieses I d e a l b i l d einer s o z i a l i s t i s c h e n P e r s ö n l i c h k e i t
v e r m i t t e l t ? " . In der d r i t t e n Phase wird die Perspektive
erweitert:
"Wie wird die P e r s ö n l i c h k e i t durch den r e a l
e x i s t i e r e n d e n Sozialismus geformt?".
Von Interesse für diese Ubergangsphase von p r ä s k r i p t i v e r
zu d e s k r i p t i v e r Analyse i s t die Auseinandersetzung
zwischen Rosenfeld und Kossakowski i n der zweiten P e r i o d e .
Rosenfeld und seine M i t a r b e i t e r beschrieben motivbedingte
Wertbeziehungen um "subjektives W e r t b e w u ß t s e i n " zu
e r f o r s c h e n , w ä h r e n d die Gruppe um Kossakowski den Vorgang
der Normverinnerlichung untersuchte, der die Handlungsb e r e i t s c h a f t s t ä r k e n s o l l t e . Obwohl d i e s e r B l i c k w i n k e l
richtungsgebend i n der d r i t t e n Phase der Diskussion
geworden i s t , w e i l er s i c h i n der P r a x i s verwenden l i e ß ,
kann von einer "allgemeinen, integrierenden Theorie der
P e r s ö n l i c h k e i t " nur i n A n s ä t z e n die Rede s e i n .

Der Soziologe Weidig z.B. e r a r b e i t e t die Strukturprobleme,
welche wiederum zur Entwicklung u n t e r s c h i e d l i c h e r ,
widerspruchsvoller Menschen f ü h r e n .
Obowhl Lemke doch auf den Wert des "'geschlechtss p e z i f i s c h e n ' Aspekts der P e r s ö n l i c h k e i t s e n t w i c k l u n g "
h i n w e i s t , problematisiert s i e n i c h t , daß die Frau nur
i n i h r e r R o l l e als b e r u f s t ä t i g e Mutter für die
DDRWissenschaft i n Betracht kommt. (124-5) W e i t e r h i n
ausgeschlossen aus der DDR-Diskussion und Lemkes Text
i s t die Erziehung zu emotionalen F ä h i g k e i t e n wie etwa
T r a u e r a r b e i t . Sie werden a l s abgetrennt vom g e s e l l s c h a f t l i c h e n Handeln gesehen.
Die a u s f ü h r l i c h e B i b l i o g r a p h i e f ü h r t DDR-Dokumente,
P r o t o k o l l e und Gesetze an, Monographien aus der
DDR,
der BRD und den USA, sowie zahlreiche DDR-Zeitschriften
die s i c h mit P ä d a g o g i k , P s y c h o l o g i e , P h i l o s o p h i e und
P o l i t i k befassen. Schon a l s Quelle für weitere Forschung i s t das Buch n ü t z l i c h , aber vor allem a l s einer
der ersten Versuche der westlichen DDR-Forschung, die
p e r s ö n l i c h k e i t s t h e o r e t i s c h e Diskussion systematisch zu
untersuchen.

T r o t z des T i t e l s e n t h ä l t dieser Gedichtband des jungen
D D R - S c h r i f t s t e l l e r s Uwe Kolbe keineswegs t r a d i t i o n e l l e
L i e b e s l y r i k , es s e i denn, man versteht Liebe im weitesten
Sinne. I n dem s t a t t eines Nachwortes a n g e f ü g t e n B r i e f an
seinen Freund Lothar Walsdorf g i b t uns Uwe Kolbe einen
wichtigen S c h l ü s s e l zum V e r s t ä n d n i s seiner L y r i k - - e s i s t
die Liebe zur Menschheit, die s e i n Schreiben bestimmt.
Jedes gute Gedicht i s t für ihn ein "Vorschlag zu Frieden
und offenem G e s p r ä c h . " B e r e i t s das im Vorspann des Bandes
a n g e f ü h r t e H ö l d e r l i n - Z i t a t weist auf die D i a l e k t i k von
p e r s ö n l i c h e r und umfassenderer L i e b e , von L i e b e s l y r i k und
"patriotischen Gesängen" h i n .
D u r c h g ä n g i g spiegeln diese Gedichte "Abschied" wider,
Abschied a l s T e i l der L i e b e , Abschied von der L i e b e , aber
auch Abschied von allem Ü b e r k o m m e n e n im Sprachlichen und
Gedanklichen. In dem Gedicht "Beschreibung der M ö g l i c h k e i t e n " h e i ß t es:
"Ich glaube der Sprache n i c h t mehr."
"Unserer Sprache, der deutschen, scheint Anmut für immer
versagt," und "schwer f ä l l t das Pathos," s c h r e i b t Uwe
Kolbe i n seinem B r i e f . Seine L y r i k i s t demzufolge herb,
i n f r e i e n Rhythmen—sie r e f l e k t i e r t den "Spaß am s e l b s t v e r s t ä n d l i c h e n Weiterdenken."
Auch das andere dem Band v o r a n g e s t e l l t e Z i t a t aus Imre
M ä d a c h s "Die T r a g ö d i e des Menschen" i s t typisch
für diese
Gedichte--Uwe Kolbe geht es um "Grenz'überschreitung" im
produktiven Sinne. Jedes Wort, jeder Gedanke, jede Maxime
wird von ihm auf Wahrheitsgehalt und A n w e n d u n g s f ä h i g k e i t
unter den heutigen V e r h ä l t n i s s e n U b e r p r ü f t . C h r i s t a Wolfs
F e s t s t e l l u n g "Der Zustand der Welt i s t verkehrt" zustimmend,
r e f l e k t i e r e n seine Gedichte U n r a s t , Suche nach Anworten,
d i e er n i c h t zu geben vermag. I n "Blindes Z e r r ä t s e l "
s c h r e i b t er:
"Ich w i l l gar kein Zeichen i c h suche es nur
W e i l L i c h t nie das D i c k i c h t . " Neben Zweifel und Verzweiflung
stehen produktive Elemente, die seiner p o s t u l i e r t e n Unbescheidenheit entspringen. Ihm sind M ö g l i c h k e i t e n zur
Ä n d e r u n g gegeben ("Metamorfosen": "Mir Uwe Kolbe sind a l l e
Wege offen") . Er w i l l n i c h t passiv s e i n ("Einer U n g l ä u b i g e n "
" E r w ü r g nicht Was w i c h t i g i n mir:
keine Rast Und kein
Loben, kein Staubsein Und f r e u d i g e r l e b t e s t i e f e s A l l e i n sein") . E r m ö c h t e a l s L y r i k e r s e i n T e i l zur Zukunft der
Menschheit beitragen ("Blindes Z e r r ä t s e l " : "Und gesagt
Und verwiesen m ö c h t e i c h irgendwo haben."). D e u t l i c h erkennbar wird i n diesem Zusammenhang die I d e n t i t ä t s s u c h e
des D i c h t e r s .
Dem Anliegen der L y r i k Uwe Kolbes entsprechen
d i e zehn G r a f i k e n von T r a k i a Wendisch, mit denen dieser
Band ausgestattet i s t . Sie v e r b i l d l i c h e n Liebe im weiten
S i n n e , von s e x u e l l e r Liebe b i s zu M u t t e r l i e b e . Mehrfach
d a r g e s t e l l t i s t das Motiv des Abschieds sowie der I d e n t i t ä t s suche, symbolisiert durch Betrachtungen im S p i e g e l .
Die Gedichte Uwe Kolbes s i n d i n ihrem philosophischen Anspruch Uberdenkenswert, jedoch n i c h t l e i c h t z u g ä n g l i c h .
Mit diesem Band l i e g t e i n weiteres B e i s p i e l für die B r e i t e
und V i e l f a l t der DDR-Lyrik v o r .

Probably the most u s e f u l i n i t i a l reference work for i n f o r mation on s o c i o - p o l i t i c a l aspects of the GDR,
the
DDRHandbuch i s now a v a i l a b l e i n a "completely revised and
enlarged e d i t i o n . " Q u a n t i t a t i v e l y larger by some 307. and
q u a l i t a t i v e l y s l i g h t l y l e s s c o n s e r v a t i v e , the new e d i t i o n
d i s t i n g u i s h e s i t s e l f from i t s predecessor p r i m a r i l y i n the

a d d i t i o n of a very u s e f u l chronology of the most important
events i n GDR h i s t o r y , 1945-1978. Laudable as t h i s addi t i o n may be, i t i s h a r d l y enough to compensate f o r the
continued r e f u s a l of the volume's e d i t o r s (the l a t e Peter
C h r i s t i a n Ludz, i n c o l l a b o r a t i o n with Johannes Kuppe) to
include any m a t e r i a l s published i n the GDR i n what i s otherwise a most u s e f u l and w e l l - o r g a n i z e d b i b l i o g r a p h y . Ludz'
lame explanation that "the vast majority of users of t h i s
handbook have no access to GDR sources"
(p. 1259) i s
a n a c h r o n i s t i c at best and d i f f i c u l t to r e c o n c i l e with h i s
c l a i m f o r i t s thorough r e v i s i o n and enlargement.
A comparison of the entry " L i t e r a t u r und L i t e r a t u r p o l i t i k " i n the 1975 and 1979 e d i t i o n s may be i n d i c a t i v e
of.how l i t t l e r e a l r e v i s i o n has a c t u a l l y taken p l a c e . The
author of t h i s a r t i c l e , H a n s - D i e t r i c h Sander, has made no
attempt to r e v i s e the polemic view of GDR l i t e r a t u r e which
he advanced i n the e a r l y 1970's,. but merely added a "seventh phase," i n which the e n t i r e l i t e r a r y development
between 1973 and 1978 i s sketched e x c l u s i v e l y i n terms of
d i s s i d e n c e and r e p r e s s i o n . Nothing i s s a i d about S i g n i f i c a n t changes i n l i t e r a r y theory and research of the 1970's;
the most s i g n i f i c a n t enlargement of the a r t i c l e i s the
lengthening and updating of the concluding l i s t of w r i t e r s
who have l e f t the GDR to i n c l u d e the emigres of the B i e r mann e r a . Although no honest c r i t i c would suggest that
t h i s problem be glossed over, the reader of Sander's a r t i c l e
never does get a p i c t u r e of the l a r g e r context i n which
these events must be understood.
Students of the GDR who do not have a copy of the 1975
e d i t i o n w i l l be w e l l rewarded by an investment i n the r e v i s e d e d i t i o n ; those who already have the e a r l i e r v e r s i o n
might consider spending ten Marks l e s s and a c q u i r i n g a copy
of the GDR's own Handbuch DDR ( L i e p z i g : V e r l a g E n z y k l o p ä d i e ,
1979), a handsome volume with a wealth of u s e f u l s t a t i s t i c s ,
maps, and i l l u s t r a t i o n s , a l b e i t from as p a r t i s a n point of
view as the DDR-Handbuch and somewhat l e s s convenient to
use. But the b i b l i o g r a p h y of GDR t i t l e s that would complement the Ludz volume i s , a l a s , l a c k i n g here, too.

The eight " K u n s t m ä r c h e n " of t h i s volume are h e a v i l y
indebted i n both form and content to the conventions of
the t r a d i t i o n a l " V o l k s m ä r c h e n " . One encounters i n these
pages a panoply of good and e v i l g i a n t s , dwarfs, gnomes,
witches, demons, s p i r i t s , magicians, k i n g s , queens, and
assorted creatures from the animal kingdom, some of
which (of course) are a c t u a l l y enchanted human beings.
Most of the s t o r i e s begin with the formulaic "Es war
einmal..." and continue i n the unpretentious, naive
s t y l e c h a r a c t e r i s t i c of the f o l k t a l e . One t a l e ,
" M ä r c h e n vom z u f ä l l i g e n Z u f a l l , " even features the brave
l i t t l e t a i l o r of the Grimm c o l l e c t i o n as the hero of the
p i e c e , with a cameo appearance by Rumpelstilzchen.
I f the elements of these t a l e s seem l a r g e l y f a m i l i a r ,
however, Manfred Pieske has woven them i n t o eight marvelously o r i g i n a l f l i g h t s of fancy whose underlying themes
range from the p e r s o n a l , e t h i c a l sphere to a l l e g o r i c a l
representations of s o c i a l and p o l i t i c a l i s s u e s . The
t i t l e s t o r y , for example, deals with a young man transformed by a witch i n t o a " G l ü c k s p f e n n i g " which always
seems to b r i n g i t s f i n d e r i l l f o r t u n e . Only when a f i n d e r
uses the wishes to which he i s e n t i t l e d u n s e l f i s h l y i s
the s p e l l broken and the young man r e u n i t e d with h i s
father.
The " M ä r c h e n vom Gnomen, der eine w u n d e r s c h ö n e Frau l i e b t e "
i s a remarkable fantasy which a l s o turns upon the theme
of s e l f l e s s n e s s , a l b e i t i n a very d i f f e r e n t context. Here,
a man i s condemned to appear as a hideous gnome u n t i l he
solves "das R ä t s e l des k a t e g o r i s c h s t e n , s e l b s t l o s e s t e n
L i e b e s d i e n s t e s für die G e l i e b t e " (130). The s o l u t i o n to
the r i d d l e , i t turns out, i s to be so s e l f l e s s , so l a c k i n g

i n possessiveness or jealousy as to c h e e r f u l l y allow
his wife a night of sexual b l i s s with another man.
The
story i s amusingly t o l d i n the f i r s t person from the
perspective of the unsuspecting and f r e q u e n t l y
nonplussed surrogate l o v e r .
An example of a t a l e d e a l i n g with s o c i a l i s s u e s i s the
" M ä r c h e n vom k ö s t l i c h e n P o l i p a t s c h k a , " a simple but timely a l l e g o r y on the dangers of attempting to s a t i s f y
questionable m a t e r i a l needs through u n c o n t r o l l e d e x p l o i t a t i o n of n a t u r a l r e s o u r c e s . Even sharper c r i t i c i s m of
c e r t a i n aspects of GDR s o c i e t y can be seen i n the
" M ä r c h e n vom K ö n i g , der einen F i n g e r t u p f haben w o l l t e . "
The r u l e r of t h i s unnamed mythical kingdom l i v e s i n
t o t a l i s o l a t i o n from the people, surrounded by
sycophants and yea-sayers who report only what the k i n g
wants to hear. When he gains the power to read the r e a l
thoughts of the people (and of h i s m i n i s t e r s ) , the k i n g
i s so h o r r i f i e d that he renounces the g i f t of c l a i r v o y a n c e .
Truth i s such a r a r e and forbidden commodity i n t h i s
kingdom that one m i n i s t e r c h a s t i s e s another at one point
with the words: "Dein Wahrheitsfanatismus hat einen
schlimmen n a t u r a l i s t i s c h e n Zug" (143).
For the most p a r t , however, Pieske's t a l e s are so r i c h
i n f a n t a s t i c f i g u r e s and occurences as to i n v i t e any
number of p o s s i b l e i n t e r p r e t a t i o n s , and I do not think
he has chosen the f a i r y t a l e form s o l e l y as a convenient
camouflage for c r i t i c i s m of GDR r e a l i t y . Nor i s i t a
f l i g h t from that r e a l i t y . I b e l i e v e , r a t h e r , that Pieske's
i n t e r e s t i n the world of fantasy stems from a thematic
concern with the r o l e of fantasy i t s e l f . In the " M ä r c h e n
vom z u f ä l l i g e n Z u f a l l " a race of giants i s portrayed as
smug, s e l f - s a t i s f i e d , dogmatic, and incapable o f admitting
e r r o r . When confronted by the race of " M ä r c h e n v o l k , "
only the l i b e r a l s among them welcome t h e i r f r e s h ideas
and s t i m u l a t i n g new approaches. L i k e most of the others
t h i s t a l e ends happily with the giants r e g a i n i n g the
a b i l i t y to value and use t h e i r imagination through
intermarriage with the " M ä r c h e n v o l k . " I f one i s
permitted to equate "Riese" with "Erwachsene," then t h i s
t a l e can be seen as an a l l e g o r y for the intended e f f e c t
of these " M ä r c h e n für Erwachsene" upon the readers of
Pieske's d e l i g h t f u l book. F i n a l l y , i f the t a l e s alone
provide i n s u f f i c i e n t s t i m u l u s , t h i r t e e n wonderful
i l l u s t r a t i o n s by Regine Grube-Heinecke can hardly f a i l
to arouse even the most atrophied imaginations.

Sabine, H a u p t d a r s t e l l e r i n i n e i n e r kurz vor der Premiere
stehenden Absolventenauffuhrung, l ö s t bei dem t i e f b e t r o f fenen Autor des S t ü c k e s die Frage aus; War es U n f a l l ,
Selbstmord oder Mord? Nun beginnen für den I c h - E r z ä h l e r
die Recherchen, die Begegnungen und G e s p r ä c h e mit denen,
die Auskunft Uber das M ä d c h e n geben k ö n n e n ; Fragen a l s
Ausgangspunkte des E r k e n n t n i s p r o z e s s e s , der L i t e r a t u r
h e i ß t . Gefragt w i r d nach der ethisch-moralischen Beschaffenheit der F i g u r e n , ablesbar an i h r e n Beziehungen untereinander. Vergangenheit, " d i e s e r anwachsende Haufen von
Erinnerungen"(Christa W o l f ) , wird abgerufen, GrUnde und
M u t m a ß u n g e n werden angegeben; von Verstrickungen und
Schuld i s t ebenso die Rede, wie U n a u f r i c h t i g k e i t , T ä u s c h u n g
oder Verschweigen b e i den Befragten ins S p i e l kommt. Die
U n f ä h i g k e i t , s i c h zu den E r e i g n i s s e n um Sabine aUBern zu
w o l l e n , die Angst vor s i c h s e l b s t wie vor dem anderen,
dominieren.
