EDITOR'S NOTE Hawaii Blue Crushes ’TIS THE SEASON for love, passion and obsession: the perfect opportunity for you to meet 11 Hawaiians who are head over heels for their homeland and its surrounding Pacific Ocean. In “Bodies of Water,” (page 28), up! contributing editor Eric Rumble celebrates pioneering lifeguards, event organizers, and pro surfers and discovers that these men and women have long pushed the boundaries of what a human being can do in the water, while teaching the rest of us to recognize our limits and either break through them or play within them. Take therapist Mark Marble, who inspires hundreds with cognitive and physical disabilities to get in the ocean with a unique in-water therapy he created. Archie Kalepa, on the other hand, developed an ocean-rescue technique that’s saving lives and is a proponent of playing within your capabilities. His just happen to involve getting towed straight into a 30-foot wave. Staying alive, he tells us, has everything to do with a love for the big blue playground where he treads. “It’s like a marriage,” he says. “It’s all about trust, respect, support.” The man can apparently write Valentine’s Day cards as well. Also in this issue, we salute another group of visionaries: the up! readers. Our fifth-annual travel photo contest inspired hundreds to share their best pictures from their favourite WestJet destination in Canada, the U.S., Mexico and the Caribbean. We also received photos (a lot of photos) from inside the airplane cabin—a phenomenon that although not prize-winning, is something that clearly fascinates our readers. As a result, it gets recognized under the half-baked category of “Best WestJet Wing Shot”) for the second year in a row. The three winning photos and their unique portrayals of place were rated by our online travel community and chosen by our staff. Go to page 57 to see what it takes to win camera gear and WestJet flights, and to get inspired for our next photo contest (open now at upmagazine.com). I hope you enjoy this issue and please share your thoughts at upmagazine.com. STORY BY ERIC RUMBLe QUEBEC CITY Technically the race is non-contact, but try telling that to these guys. EXTREME SPORTS Crash of the Titans THINK OF OLD Quebec City as the regal, weathered face of the country’s grandmother, and the Red Bull Crashed Ice World Championship track as a gigantic, gleaming white tongue unfurling from her mouth. Tens of thousands bundled-up folks cram inside the Old Town’s thick stone walls, the throng crowded against a serpentine frozen slide that’s 550 metres long and sculpted with obstacles. A stampede of hands thumps the boards that bookend the track. Air horns bray. Guitar licks and bass thwacks reverberate. The cold gnaws the crowd, steam billows and flasks and mugs abound. Skates warble over infinite snow-dusted ruts as racers in full hockey gear jostle for position. The race begins near the Château Frontenac and ends next to the icy currents of the St. Lawrence River. The track's rough edges and sharp corners undulate like a nasty tide’s menace turned to translucent stone. Calgary resident Kerri Anne Wallace, 2009’s inaugural women’s champ, had one word for this spectacle: “gnarly.” But for every last gutsy contender, the mettle being tested by this daunting gauntlet is balance, not brawn. Quebec City’s Red Bull Crashed Ice World Championship begins with qualifying races on March 19, and crowns men’s and women’s champions on March 20. The festivities are capped with a street party on the Grand Allée. All events (and adrenaline rushes) are free (redbullcrashedice.com). westjet . com | FEB/ 1 0 John Evely/RedBull getting there WestJet flies to Quebec City once daily from Toronto this month. 17 STORY BY eric rumble | ILLUSTRATION BY DAVE WHAMMOND Mexico WORLD RECORDS Mexicans Go for Gold LAST VALENTINE’S DAY in Mexico City’s Zocalo Square, some 39,897 citizens and tourists smooched their way to the world’s largest public kiss, out-smacking a 2008 British record by thousands. Such achievements were huge in Mexico last year, a country whose citizens hold Guinness World Records for everything from oversized Christmas ornaments to the largest flour taco. Below, we honour the recent record-setting by a country notably missing from Vancouver and Whistler this month. LARGEST CHEESECAKE With a team of 55 chefs, 800 kilos of cream cheese and yogurt, 350 kilos of cookies, 250 kilos of sugar, 150 kilos of butter and 100 kilos of strawberries, chef Miguel Angel Quezada whipped up a dessert fit for Godzilla, measuring 2.5 metres in diameter. More than 20,000 slices were passed out around Mexico City. LONGEST MARATHON OF SPEECHES Inspired by Toastmasters International, 458 speakers went on for nearly 73 hours to promote a culture of debate to Mexican youth. LONGEST CATWALK In San Luis Potosi, 81 fashion models flaunted up and down a runway stretching 1,320.5 metres. LARGEST MEATBALL Prepared to promote the film adaptation of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, chefs at Cancun’s Ritz Carlton made and served a 109-pound meatball. Talk show host Jimmy Kimmel was so steamed that he beat it on air—twice—about seven weeks later with a mammoth 198.6-pound wad of beef. LARGEST GROUP OF ‘THRILLER’ DANCERS Led by impersonator Hector Jackson and a team of choreographers at Mexico City’s Monument to the Revolution, a costumed mob of 13,597 celebrated the late King of Pop’s birthday (August 29) by grooving to the title track from the best selling album of all time. This dwarfed the previous record, set by 242 American college students in May. LARGEST MARIACHI BAND Assembled outside the Cabanas Cultural Institute in Guadalajara, the birthplace of mariachi, some 549 horn-blowers, bassists and violinists played classics like “Ceilito Lindo” and “Guadalajara.” OLYMPICS The ups and downs of Canadian Olympic skier Jenn Hiel FEB/ 1 0 | upm aga zine . com The queen of moguls defends her Olympic Gold Medal—while flashing her own bling courtesy of a new sponsorship with BIRKS jewellery—in Whistler this month. Like the terrain on which she excels, the 26-year-old Spruce Grove, Alberta, native’s career has been up and down. Here’s her trajectory, with hopes for another high point on the podium when the world is watching. —Dan James 18 She continues her winning ways in 2001, capturing a bronze in her first World Cup. At only 16, Jenn bursts on to the mogul scene in 2000, winning her first Canadian national title. She caps her comeback in 2006 with Olympic Gold and her second-straight World Championship. Rehabbed and reinvigorated, Jenn returns in 2003 to win four consecutive World Cup titles. Competing in her first Olympics, she misses the podium in Salt Lake by the slimmest of margins: 1/100 of a point. Prolonged knee pain caused by a misaligned hip sidelines her for the ’07/’08 season. As the new BIRKS ambassador, Jenn unveils her passion for design, creating her own line of jewellery. Kelowna’s Best Value W hen life calls for an intermission ... As a kid, it was Grant Fuhr. Do you have a favourite Olympic moment? There are a few, but probably the one I remember the most is when Myriam Bédard won her biathlon gold medals [at the 1994 Lillehammer games]. She was from Quebéc and at home it was a big thing, a historic moment. Where was your last vacation? They’re all exciting. I enjoy every sport because it’s the world’s best athletes competing against each other, but if I had to pick just one, I’d say speed skating. Hawaii. You feel like you’re in paradise when you’re there. There’s the ocean, the weather’s great. It’s tranquil, and you can relax and you don’t have anything to worry about. Hockey’s a fast game. What’s your favourite way to slow down in Vancouver? What do you miss most about Montréal? I like to take a ride through Stanley Park [in his Mercedes G-Wagon]; maybe stop in at the Prospect Point Cafe (5601 Stanley Park Dr.; prospectpoint.ca). Where are you going for your next vacation? FEB/ 1 0 | upm aga zine . com Usually we like to go to Hawaii from Vancouver, but this summer we’re intending to go to Atlantis (atlantis.com) in the Bahamas. 20 I miss my friends and my family the most. But as for the city, I’d say I miss going to the Old Port. It’s a quaint area, lots of little shops and restaurants and entertainment. Pretty much anything you need is down there in an old setting from back in the day. It’s pretty cool. You spent a long time in Miami playing for the Florida Panthers. What do you miss most about the city? The weather, the warm climate. Miami’s very laid back; it’s a nice place to relax and enjoy during the off-season. What’s always in your carry-on? My laptop, a MacBook Pro. iPhone or BlackBerry? iPhone. There’s more things you can do on the iPhone and you can download games on it, like Bejeweled. What’s on your playlist on the road? I use my iPhone. I love all different kinds of music, but my favourite bands are U2 and Coldplay. getting there WestJet flies to Vancouver 227 times weekly from various Canadian cities this month. MARTIN SOUVENIRS Shopping for History Must-have mementoes from both sides of a diverse Caribbean jewel Sint Maarten/Saint Martin is bathed in raucous history and the Caribbean island’s cultural secrets hide within ubiquitous souvenirs across the land. Check out the stories behind the mementoes below before deciding which to bring home. Cigars (Preferably Chocolate-Flavoured) The country’s economy was fuelled with the salt, cotton and tobacco trade during the halcyon days after the Treaty of Concordia in 1648. While the Dutch side paved the path in tobacco production, farms sprouted across the island and tobacco still plays a major role in the local culture. A savoury case of Saint Martin-brand chocolate-flavoured cigars from the Cigar Emporium (US$10) is hand-rolled nearby and adds a bit of decadence to your history lesson (66 Front St., Philipsburg; 599-542-2787). FEB/ 1 0 | upm aga zine . com Ruby Bute Art 22 Locally revered Ruby Bute is a poet, a painter and a storyteller. Her impressive 1,500-sq.-ft. gallery sits on her overgrown property in St. Martin, just beyond a gate that is opened by request. Her colourful pieces depict many shades of island history. Grab a print, starting at US$10, and let her tell you the story behind the image (F-97150 St. Martin; 590-580-5533). Saint Martin Rum Rum on the island is legendary, infused with folklore, and delivers a unique sweet bite. Distilling dates back to the 1800s when private homes produced it from the plentiful sugar cane by-products without government regulation. Hand-painted bottles from Ma Doudou Punch, a hardto-find shop stocked floor-to-ceiling with liquor in the St. Martin town of Cul de Sac, are considered a must for their famously smooth flavours (banana vanilla, anyone?). Plastic bottles made on site start at US$8 for a half litre (97150 St. Martin Cul de Sac; 590-87-3043). Guavaberry Barbecue Sauce Spicy and sweet are popular flavour combos on the island, so a US$9 bottle of this sauce straight from the Guavaberry Emporium in Philipsburg is a great way to bring the island’s taste home. The shop was once the governor’s house and now serves as the headquarters for this berry and the concoctions deriving from its cultivation. The island is said to have the highest concentration of guava berries on the planet, and while the fruit was never a source of major local commerce, its use in jams, juices, tarts and cakes dates back more than a century (8–10 Front St., Philipsburg; 599-542-2965; guavaberry.com). Shoppers in the know go to Marigot. This is the heart of St. Martin’s French style, where clothes are shipped straight out of Paris and authentic French influences make up the city’s inner workings—particularly when it comes to what to wear. Throughout the island’s history, France has occupied the entire area at various times, leaving a deep footprint in the local culture. For US$2 each at the Shipwreck Shop, a lacy old-fashioned bag is a stylish (and affordable) nod to a faded colonial power (Le West Indies Mall, Marigot; 590-51-0774; shipwreckshops.com). The Wednesday and Saturday morning markets in Marigot, set up along the wharves on the Boulevard de France, are free to browse and famous for their wide variety of produce, fish, seasonings, and arts and crafts. The makeshift shops allow for leisurely shopping while gazing at the crystal-clear Caribbean waters. There were several years of closed-door meetings, hush-hush expense reports, endless red-eye flights to London for face time with author J.K. Rowling and trips to the Scottish Highlands to study the cuisine and architecture of Hogwarts’ imaginary setting. Tack on constant supervision by the film series’ Academy Award-winning production designer Stuart Craig and art director Alan Gilmore, plus custom cameos from the original cast produced for insertion into the rides, and you’ve got a US$265-million, eight-hectare wonderland that’s generating the type of buzz typically reserved for a Rowling book release. It’s the only place in the world where you can send a postcard from Potter’s school district. 24 Hog’s Head Pub Thank Universal Studios’ executive chef Steve Jayson for doing his homework and bringing back the authentic tastes of Scotland, albeit slightly modernized for New World palettes. Look forward to pumpkin juice and Butterbeer, which in Tudor times contained butter, sugar and egg yolks in addition to alcohol. Jayson has (thankfully) updated the recipe for hot Florida summers. Ollivander’s Wand Shop Here the wand chooses the wizard, instead of the other way around. Don’t ask how— something about sparks flying when a wand first meets its master. Each one of the wands in stock can reportedly activate hidden objects in the park (and elsewhere at Islands of Adventure) using infrared technology similar to that on the Nintendo Wii. Hogwarts Castle The crown jewel of the park, the castle is about 50 metres high, but uses forced perspective to appear four times that height (the windows at the top are smaller than the windows below). Its architecture is a mishmash of medieval and Victorian, and inside the walls awaits the most advanced technological feature in the whole park. Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey Cryptically called Project Strongarm during construction, this signature thrill ride uses robocoaster technology, with seats suspended from a monster robotic arm—a six-axis industrial lift called the Kuka KR 1000 Titan. The robot got its start in auto assembly lines and iron foundries. In 2007 its 1,000-kilo payload capacity earned a Guinness World Record for strength. Based on the TriWizard Tournament seen in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, these twin 975-metre-long steel roller coasters comprise the planet’s first duelling, inverted coaster. The trains are precisely weighed when they leave the station in order to properly time near-collision points that bring the coasters within a foot of each other. FEB/ 1 0 | upm aga zine . com Eva Las Vegas 26 Eva Longoria Parker jumps into the Las Vegas dining fray, brandishing her high-end home cooking and a choice spot in the new CityCenter EVA LONGORIA PARKER gets what she wants, even when she doesn’t know she wants it. Take the Desperate Housewives star’s foray into the Las Vegas dining scene, for example. Less than a year after realizing her long-time dream of opening up her own restaurant with the debut of Beso (Spanish for “kiss”) in Los Angeles, the model-turned-actress and avid cook jumped at the chance to open a second location in Las Vegas. “The city has so many great restaurants and chefs, so I knew I wanted to extend Beso [there],” she says. “I just thought it would be much later in my life.” But the fact that Beso numero dos was invited to open in the opulent 67-acre, US$8.5-billion CityCenter city-withina-city development, surrounded by sophisticated neighbours (see sidebar), expedited the expansion. Beso Las Vegas (besolasvegas.com) opened its doors in December, and while it’s a sister property of a Hollywood counterpart, it’s no twin. Just as with Beso Hollywood, Longoria Parker’s culinary colleague, renowned chef Todd English, is at the helm. The sleek, sinful décor—complete with luxe chandeliers and a rich brown-and-gold colour scheme— travelled from L.A. But in Sin City, diners can head to Beso for lunch as well as dinner to savour the Latin steakhouse menu, which includes chili-rubbed skirt steak and paella, as well as Longoria Parker’s own tortilla soup and guacamole, both cherished Mexican family recipes from her youth in Corpus Christi, Texas. “In my culture, food is the reason we come together, from dinner everyday at 6, to making tamales at Christmas with my aunts, mom and sisters,” she says. “I think cooking is a very personal thing to share with people. I do it every week in my house with my friends and my family, so I wanted to be able to do that on a much wider scale.” The piece de resistance is Eve, the 8,000-sq.-ft. nightclub that opened on New Year’s Eve above the restaurant. A massive 360-degree video screen encompasses the dance floor and lavish VIP booths soar towards the 50-foot-tall arched ceiling. “It’s stunning. Gigantic. Enormous. Artistic.” Longoria Parker gushes about her new digs. “CityCenter definitely indulges in excellence and luxury.” getting there WestJet flies to Las Vegas 74 times weekly from various Canadian cities this month. Kennelly started surfing around the age of five, learning to rip alongside the famous Irons brothers on the Hawaiian island of Kauai and eventually turned her talent and fearless, punk-rock demeanor into a remarkable career. Not surprisingly, balance is her blueprint, on and off her board. “I really love being surrounded by nature, hiking trails, ocean, parks, whatever,” says Kennelly, who now lives on bustling Waikiki’s leafy eastern fringe. “But I also love being able to get a taste of the city whenever I want. It’s a very delicate balance, and it’s really easy for there to be too much city.” » “Being on Waikiki Beach, there’s a lot of excitement going on here all the time,” says hot-blooded big-wave paragon Clyde Aikau—a larger-than-life enterpriser who has taught people to surf, stand-up paddle, jet-ski and parasail here since the 1970s. “But even today, I can grab a surfboard and paddle out and it all comes back to you: the solitude of the ocean is still here in Waikiki. That hasn’t changed. But, sure, there are a lot more buildings here, just like any other place.” Today, Hawaii is peppered with all sorts of riffs on the maxim, “Eddie would go,” harkening back to Aikau’s exalted brother, who disappeared after his canoe capsized near Molokai in 1978. Clyde himself is a decorated surf champ and a cultural giant around Waikiki, where he runs one of the state’s oldest surf schools (waikikibeachactivities.com) out of the Hilton Hawaiian Village Hotel. FEB/ 1 0 | upm aga zine . com BIOS 48 ARCHIE KALEPA DAVE KALAMA MARK CUNNINGHAM With a native bloodline and Greek god’s physique, Archie Kalepa was born to shepherd his community. He’s been running Maui’s lifeguard corps for a decade and has been patrolling beaches for nearly 30 years, during which he saved 15 people from a hurricane with an ocean-rescue technique he created. Yet, his most amazing feats seem to involve putting himself in harm’s way. The toys in Kalepa’s garage reveal his daredevilry: scuffed dirt bikes, fishing spears and boards to ride all types of peril. “I got a guy from NASA to make me some fins,” he boasts, grinning at his hydrofoil. He’s surfed Jaws for 13 years and goes big with tow-in pioneer Buzzy Kerbox. “It’s like a marriage. It’s all about trust, respect, support,” Kalepa says. “Buzzy and I almost don’t need to talk to each other out there, because we know what the other guy is going to do.” » A four-star general in the ranks of watermen, Dave Kalama is among the exclusive brotherhood that invented tow-in surfing. Between bouts against Jaws (a huge reef break off Maui’s north coast) with his legendary tow-in partner, Laird Hamilton, he masters stand-up paddling (on epic solo missions between islands), bonds with his three kids and pours time into charity. Kalama and Hamilton biked and paddled the length of the archipelago state—750 kms in seven days—for autism in 2006, and, in 2008, they launched Pipeline to a Cure, an annual cystic fibrosis benefit (pipelinetoacure.com). His father and grandfather were also famous watermen, and Kalama’s documented dedication has been credited with reinvigorating modern surf classics like Step Into Liquid and Riding Giants. “Once you step in Hawaii’s water, you’re in over your head,” cautions Mark Cunningham. He’d know, having spent more than two decades patrolling a stretch of Oahu’s North Shore that’s famous for its mammoth waves. Cunningham started lifeguarding in California during “the summer that Jaws came out, and nobody went swimming.” On his watch, towers and technology replaced rickety stands and whistles, and prevention became as important as reaction. But Cunningham is really renowned— and owns many trophies—because he moves his sleek 6’4” frame through the tide like a dolphin. “As a bodysurfer, there are certainly spots in the water where you feel like you’re part of the food chain,” he says. “But I love that you’re totally embraced by the water. It’s such an incredible sensual experience, one you can’t ever get from standing or riding on top of it.” » 2010: Escape the crowds. ENJOY 100+ WINE REVIEWS IN EVERY ISSUE! SUBSCRIBE NOW & SAVE! They design and build gorgeous retro boards— finned cruisers, fishes, longboards and paddleboards—using soy- and sugar-based foams, sun-catalyzed resins and inlays made with hemp, organic cotton, bamboo and silk. “We’re trying to promote an open-source format, to show other shapers and manufacturers that it’s not that hard, it does make a difference down the line and that difference can come from just one layer of materials,” says Bernhardt. They couldn’t ask for a better laboratory. “If it can hold up on the North Shore, it can hold up anywhere,” says Bushman. “Better yet, we can build something here and test it that afternoon.” » SIG ZANE TATIANA HOWARD For 15 years, Sig Zane, a social pillar and spirited artist, has sold his handcrafted shirts, dresses, bags and other garments out of his sleek boutique in Hilo (sigzane.com). His signature style explores heritage, with designs inspired by ancestral plants, literature and symbolism, and defies kitsch. In 2007, Zane started creating longboard graphics for shaper Jeff Hunt. One design echoes Polynesia with leaf patterns from a breadfruit tree called ulu, which is traditionally used to make boards, drums and canoes. “Ulu means, ‘to grow, or to inspire.’ So that is a perfect symbol; a perfect metaphor,” Zane explains, adding that ulu trees are given to Hawaiians on their first birthday. “It’s an important image for us. On a surfboard, on hula costumes, on things that are very important, we want to embellish them. You want all that positiveness.” » Imagine a beach peppered by fit, sun-kissed ladies in matching dress: some surfing, some towed by kites and sails, all floating in unison like ocean sirens. It’s not a Sports Illustrated shoot; this is what Hawaii’s newest women’s movement looks like. In 2007, Tatiana Howard and Juliana Shelef launched The Butterfly Effect (betheeffect.com), a series of celebratory events—part demonstration, part community-building, part beach party—created for and by water sport-loving women. It started with 15 participants on Maui’s North Shore; last year’s gathering attracted more than 100, and affiliated events have take place in Brazil, New Zealand, Europe, Dominican Republic, Tahiti, Israel and Oregon. “It pushes the girls in a fun, challenging way, where they’re not being judged. It’s just fun and builds community,” says Howard. “It’s backwards here; everything’s competitive. Life’s too short to be unhappy with yourself.” » We have more than grapes growing from our vines. Mark Marble founded this non-profit group (accessurf.org)—and kicked off these empowering events—with Richard Julian as a sort of outdoor, in-water therapy for people with cognitive or physical disabilities, helping them to surf, kayak, snorkel or simply float in the ocean using adaptive equipment. AccesSurf has amassed more than 900 volunteers and assists hundreds of families with disabled loved ones. Having worked as a recreational therapist for 25 years, Marble has undoubtedly found his calling. “Just being able to provide access to the water by assembling the right people, the right equipment and all the support they need to get them into the water, it’s huge!” he says. “Banzai” Betty Depolito left California for Oahu in 1977 to surf, took third in a contest and never returned to the mainland. From the 1990s on, you’d be hard pressed to find anyone, anywhere, so committed to celebrating the planet’s wave-chasing females. “I don’t like it when people compare women’s surfing to men’s,” says Depolito. “We deserve an avenue to push our own limits.” Back in the day, beach jocks would tell her to “go home and bake cookies,” or “you’re ruining the family structure.” Her response? Keep charging Pipeline and organize surfing and body-boarding contests purely for women and promote their success during her 12-year career in news broadcasting. Her annual Pipeline Tidal 9 (pipegirls.com) contest even uses second-hand trophies, handpainted banners, organic Tees and raises money for the Girl Scouts of Hawaii. © 2010 Columbia Sportswear Company. Desert Cornucopia THE SANTA CRUZ Valley is a broad, sunmottled plain hemmed in by rust-hued mountains, stretching from Tucson, Arizona, down to the Mexican border city of Nogales. Saguaro cacti frame this landscape like tall, ragged aliens, their cockeyed arms signalling victory over the unforgiving landscape, seemingly imploring you to rethink what you expect to find in the desert. This valley is a primordial food-trading corridor, and perhaps the country’s oldest continually cultivated area. The climate and soil mirror what you’ll find in the Mediterranean—minus the sea. Tohono O’odham tribal legends speak of tepary beans, one of the most drought-tolerant in the world. Prickly pear, buckhorn cholla and especially saguaro cacti all produce prized fruits. Syrup from roasted agave pits trumps any sugar—real or artificial. The long pods from bountiful mesquite trees are ground into flour that tastes bittersweet. And while indigenous staples remain, there’s a culinary ingenuity surrounding Tucson that is bent on accentuating and developing local, sustainable flavours. Not only do the breakfast and lunch options rely on traditional ingredients (including home-grown corn and squash), they offer vital, affordable alternatives to the processed-food diet that has spawned a diabetes epidemic in North America’s aboriginal communities. Desert Rain’s version of a value meal might be white and green chili (white tepary beans, chicken, tomato and avocado), with corn bread and agave-sweetened lemonade for less than $10. Queen Creek Olive Mill 25062 S. Meridian Rd., Queen Creek; 480-888-9290; queencreekolivemill.com Falling just within range of Tucson’s 100-mile diet, this family-owned working farm has made a name for itself by extolling sustainability and offering customers the opportunity to escape from “pre-packaged, cellophane city life.” For a decade it’s been crafting high-quality, cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil from a drip-irrigated, pesticide-free crop, and daily facility tours delve deep into the significance of varietal character, fruit maturity, oleic acid content and proper harvesting and processing technique. The only olive producer in the state, Queen Creek now grows 16 varieties and sells a range of stuffed olives, tapenades and flavoured oils, including a Serrano chili-infused barn-burner. westjet . com | FEB/ 1 0 6 The food from this Sonoran desert farm, about a half hour west of Tucson, could help heal your body in gradual, spreadable doses. Beyond producing a bevy of jams, jellies and syrups with organic pesticide-free produce (peppers, peaches, plums, pomegranates, pears, papayas, pineapples and just about every berry under the sun), they specialize in making jellies, syrups, rubs and barbecue sauces with locally harvested cacti fruit. They champion mesquite as a solid source of calcium, iron and zinc that also helps control blood sugar. And like an edible amulet, prickly pear nectar is alleged to combat diabetes, obesity, gastrointestinal issues, skin problems, viral infections and—in the short term—hangovers. To get your hands on these goods, check out the Tucson Farmer’s Market every Saturday. 69 FEB/ 1 0 | upm aga zine . com STORY BY JAMES McCARTEN GOLF 70 Dominican Republic Golf Republic The Dominican Republic is defending its crown as the Caribbean’s golf heart. Lucky for them, the credit crunch doesn’t speak Spanish There’s no shortage of white sand and azure-blue water in the Caribbean to ease the sting of a Canadian winter. But if the colour spectrum you’re craving also includes the kelly greens of some of the world’s most challenging and dynamic golf courses, one island nation is without equal. The Dominican Republic boasts more than 30 layouts, a number that seems to be constantly on the rise, and that includes some of the finest coastal golf real estate this side of Pebble Beach. There’s the classic seaside bite of Teeth of the Dog (US$160; casadecampo. com.do), a Pete Dye triumph that first opened in 1971, was remodelled in 2006 and is long billed as not only the Caribbean’s greatest course, but one of the finest golf experiences in the world, thanks to its spectacular oceanside vistas and fearsome Dye-style bunkers. It’s the centrepiece course at the sprawling and well-appointed Casa de Campo resort, a 7,000-acre complex on the island’s southeast coast just on the outskirts of La Romana, where, last month, a US$20-million facelift was unveiled. The resort, now home to Dye and his wife Alice, has added 80 new high-tech rooms and suites, all with flat-screen TVs and iPod hookups, along with a redesigned main lobby, new restaurant, lounge, fitness centre, library, boutique, and pool area. Not far away, the Teeth’s sister course, Dye Fore (US$160), dances along the cliff edge some 300 feet above the spectacular Chavon River valley, which served as the backdrop for those spectacular river scenes in Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now. On the northeastern edge of the island in Punta Cana lies the tough-as-nails Roco Ki Golf Club (US$200; rocoki.com), an unforgiving Nick Faldo design with two oceanside closers: the clifftop par-3 17th hole, which demands a precise tee shot to a tiny outcrop of volcanic rock, and the fearsome 508-yard, par-5 18th, where fierce trade winds and the pounding surf conspire to make par a remarkable score. The crown jewel of the D.R.’s northeastern coast, however, is the enormous Cap Cana resort complex (US$290; capcana.com)—the impressive leader in The Roco Ki Golf Club's daunting 17th hole overlooks the northeastern cliffs of the island. amenity and course expansion in the country, creditors be damned. The firstever Jack Nicklaus-inspired hotel, the Golden Bear Lodge & Spa, opened its doors in November, perched on a bluff overlooking the new Las Iguanas layout, a parkland-style Nicklaus design that also debuted last year. The resort’s centrepiece layout, the Punta Espada Golf Club (US$375 November through May) is a verdant, breathtaking par-72 course that’s home to the Champions Tour’s Cap Cana Championship in March. Easily the best of the three layouts, the playable Punta Espada features the generous fairways and subtle greens for which Nicklaus designs are known for. But the ever-present trade winds and water hazards—eight of Punta Espada’s 18 holes skirt the ocean—ensure the course, a brutal 7,400 yards from the back tees, is no slouch. THE D.R. HOSTS THE PROS When your tournament is at a place like Punta Espada, attracting a stellar field is no sweat. After just two years in its late-March time slot, the Cap Cana Championship boasts marquee names like Hale Irwin, Nick Price and Loren Roberts. Check capcana.com or pgatour.com for details. getting there WestJet flies to Punta Cana six times weekly from various Canadian cities this month. Go from winter blahs to winter aaahhhs. STORY BY CHRIS BOWERMAN CANCUN HOTELS Royal Treatment SPLURGE The Royal in Cancun Blvd. Kukulcan Km 11.5, Hotel Zone | 800-760-0944 realresorts.com | from US$474 CancUn’s Hotel Zone is clustered with seaside lodgings bearing regal titles inspired by the sandbar’s obscure ancient Maya fishing port, El Rey (“The King”). But it’s the Royal in Cancun—the flagship in Real Resorts’ fleet of luxury properties, as well as its newest and grandest—that reigns supreme. The adults-only, all-inclusive, five-star resort and convention centre recently expanded to 288 suites, all of them boasting spectacular views of the Caribbean Sea and a choice parcel of a white-sand beach. The resort also features the area’s only beachfront swim-up suites and ocean-view full-service spa. Integrated into the turquoise tranquility is an epic infinity pool surrounded by canopied shade beds, chaise lounge chairs and private cabanas. Overlooking it all is a gazebo frequented by wedding parties fresh from nuptials at a new glass-enclosed oceanfront chapel. Guests can play golf, work out and hit the rooftop tennis court, but most stay poolside, lolling on ergonomic foam mattresses or mooring at the swim-up bar. In the thick of this playground is an alfresco restaurant, where seductively plated à la carte dishes rival the epicurean works of art at the hotel’s five other eateries. The Royal could milk its imperial motif, but tacky pageantry is banished in favour of classic, contemporary refinement and appreciation for its crown jewel—the sea. BEST VALUE At almost half the price of the swim-up suites, the upper-level Royal Junior Ocean View (RJO) suites are similarly decadent and boast magnificent views. These 653-sq.-ft. rooms also contain a terrace, double Jacuzzi and expansive bathroom. SAVE El Rey del Caribe 72 CancUn’s preeminent green hotel is a retreat from the downtown’s concrete and glass just outside its wrought-iron gates. Frugal, eco-friendly guests bask in the holistic sentiment and sustainable ingenuity at work: rooftop solar panels heat water that’s stored in thermal insulation tanks, biodegradable soaps facilitate filtration and reuse of laundry water for a vegetable and herb garden, and pool water is used for toilets. Naturally, recycling facilities abound. The cheerful proprietors built the family-run B&B in 1983, arranging the colonial Mexican design around a courtyard enveloped in native flora. Fruit-bearing guaya, mango and banana trees dovetail into a canopy of sapote, mahogany, cedar and palms, where talkative toucans rest on their migratory route. All 31 rooms—whitewashed with splashes of marigold and indigo—open to the lush vegetation with bromeliads and orchids, a gurgling 12-foot rainwater fountain, and bijou pool area. Guilt-free enjoyment continues in the rooms, outfitted with aromatic cedar furniture, tropical hardwood floors, cable TV, phone and wi-fi. Some even have composting toilets. Watch for other El Rey locations in Playa del Carmen and Chichen Itza opening later this year. BEST VALUE Breakfast at the “shoes-off” palapa café is included and most of the rooms have kitchenettes, so self-sufficient travellers can prep their own meals (and bevvies). All rooms cost the same, so snag the second-level units for the best views of the courtyard and easy access to a serene rooftop retreat. getting there WestJet flies to Cancun 25 times weekly from various Canadian cities this month.
