LE STÉRÉOSCOPE DES SOLITAIRES A labyrinthine course after texts by Juan Rodolfo Wilcock Ana Maria Rodriguez Composition Ingrid von Wantoch Rekowski Direction Fred Pommerehn Stage and Light Design Théâtre National de Marseille La Criée It is possibly due to the fact that J.Rodolfo Wilcock wrote his most wellknown work in Italian that the Argentinian author is not automatically associated with Argentinian literature. Born in Buenos Aires in 1919, Wilcock died in 1978 in Italy. His short stories and literary incidents are written in the best of Argentinian story-telling traditions. The stories are absurd, seamlessly blurring reality with the surreal, human with animal, people with monsters. Wilcock tells these stories in an everyday language, which underlines the incidental, abstruse figures all the more. In 1972, “The Mavericks’ Stereoscope” was published, in which a world of labyrinths around the Hieronymus Bosch of literature is created: a work full of absurd ideas and virtuosic, deceitful imagination. Seventy mavericks are portrayed in sixty-six stories. One meets a pair of lovers, who decide never to leave their bed and end up consuming themselves. Or there is the emaciated centaur, who paints still life. In another story a “siren” is not at home in the picturesque grottos of the Mediterranean Sea, but on the banks of a stinking river full of rubbish. Ingrid von Wantoch Rekowski, Ana Maria Rodriguez and Fred Pommerehn interpret this unusual universe as a labyrinthine course, which will be installed in the circus in Reims. The audience is able to move through the museum-like sound labyrinth and follow the traces left behind by the loners. Winding passageways lead to magnificent showcases and cabinets, which preserve Wilcock’s universe, but are also afflicted by very real phenomena during the course of the evening. → video 5 minutes → video 40 minutes Le Stéréoscope des Solitaires A labyrinthine course after texts by Juan Rodolfo Wilcock Festival Les Musiques, Marseille May 14, 2016: 18h00, 20h30, 21h30 May 15, 2016: 16h00, 18h00, 19h00 Théâtre National de Marseille La Criée 30 Quai de Rive Neuve, 13007 Marseille, France Ana Maria Rodriguez, composition Ingrid von Wantoch Rekowski, direction Fred Pommerehn, stage and light design Annapaola Leso, Dance Ana Maria Rodriguez, live-electronics Ensemble KNM Berlin Matthew Conley, trumpet Theodor Flindell, violin Kirstin Maria Pientka, viola Cosima Gerhardt, violoncello premiere Reims Festival Scènes d‘Europe Le Manège de Reims (Cirque) February 18 and 18, 2015 duration: 50 minutes Le Stéréoscope des Solitaires is a project by KNM Berlin in coproduction with Césaré, Centre national création musicale de Reims / Reims Scènes d‘Europe. LE STÉRÉOSCOPE DES SOLITAIRES A labyrinthine course after texts by Juan Rodolfo Wilcock Ana Maria Rodriguez: Space – Poetry – Spontaneity In her works, Ana Maria Rodriguez links the spontaneity of improvisation with fully composed scores. She interacts with the musicians as laptop player and takes part in the performances of her own works. At the same time, she also works with the acoustic and architectural conditions of the performance space when creating her compositions, installations and scenic works. Thematically, her latest pieces could be said to revolve around the relation between poetry and technology. This relationship does not only comprise the compositional use of words, poetry and literary sources, but also in a more abstract way the musical utilisation of technological means in order to create a richness of perspectives based on poetry. Heterogeneous time layers, diverse spaces, plots running contrary to logic as in poetry: Ana Maria Rodriguez is committed to expressing herself in a precise and sensuous way. Ingrid von Wantoch Rekwoski : Body – Embodyment? I am trying to go beyond the language of traditional musical theatre to invent new and unconventional theatrical forms, regardless of whether they are for a drama, an opera or a concert. My research is wholly dedicated to the dialogue between music and theatre and between theatre and painting. To me the possibilities appear endless. Musical - Music is essential for me, whether it is entrusted to actors, singers or musicians. I am aiming for a form of expression that pours out of the music. Rather than illustrating music, I like imagining in counterpoint a specific body capable of entering into dialogue with it. The performers’ acting is not naturalistic, but is organised like a score, generating a new rhythmical, physical and harmonic theatricality. (Ingrid von Wantoch Rekowski) Studies of piano, dance and art at the University of Wisconsin (USA). LE STÉRÉOSCOPE DES SOLITAIRES A labyrinthine course after texts by Juan Rodolfo Wilcock Fred Pommerehn: sitespecific settings - dialog with the environment His work is constructed primarily from found objects and common every day material. His main interests are, the effects of natural and artificial light and their interaction with the installation. His preference for site-specific settings allow access to the work in an informal even coincidental way. His work has in many cases a direct relationship to the community in which he lives and works. He prefers to be in a close dialog with the environment around him and therefore has chosen often to work with other members of the society such as non artistic professionals, school children, young adults and persons in extreme situations such as political refugees, prisoners and persons with physical or mental disabilities. Juan Rodolfo Wilcock (17 April 1919 - 16 March 1978) was an Argentine writer, poet, critic and translator. He studied at the Universidad de Buenos Aires from which he graduated as a Civil Engineer in 1943. That same year he started to work for a railroad company then in expansion in the western parts of Argentina. His first known literary work and accomplishment came in 1940 under the title Libro de poemas y canciones („Book of Poems and Songs“). The same work would win the prestigious Municipal Award of Literature given by the City of Buenos Aires. Soon Wilcock would see himself surrounded by some of the most prominent writers-intellectuals of the time like Jorge Luis Borges, Silvina Ocampo, and Adolfo Bioy Casares to name just a few of the acquaintances he befriended. In 1945 Wilcock undertook the self-publication of two collections of poetry: Ensayos de poesía lírica and Persecución de las musas menores. The following year he would again obtain the award granted by the Argentine Society of Writers (SADE) for his Paseo Sentimental. Also in 1946, Wilcock published his Los hermosos días. At the time, General Juan Peron’s regime was suffocating intellectual life in Argentina; as World War II was over in Europe, many chose to relocate to the newly liberated capitals of the old world. In 1951 Wilcock left Argentina for the first time in a visit to Italy. By 1953 he was residing in London earning a living as a translator and a commentator for the BBC. After a short return to Buenos Aires in 1954 he once again set sail for Italy where he would settle for good three years later. From now on most of his works, some of his most celebrated, would be written in Italian, a language he learned to command perfectly. In 1975, Wilcock requested the Italian citizenship which was finally granted to him a year after his death which occurred in his country cottage in Lubriano, Province of Viterbo, north to Rome, in March 1978.
