1. Kaiser’s (mid-size supermarket)

Kaiser’s are middle-sized supermarkets with a focus on food. They are not present in all of Germany, but
quite strong in Berlin and the Frankfurt area. They count about 503 stores with sales of some €2,150
million. Kaiser’s is about to be taken over by the leading food retail chain “Edeka”.
2. KaDeWe (“gourmet temple”)

The German equivalent to “Harrods” in London and “Galeries Lafayette” in Paris – they have a 30,000
square metre fine food section on the sixth floor, one of the largest in Europe! AAFC has worked with
KaDeWe a number of times and organised Canada food promotions under the CBAI marketing program.
KaDeWe is part of the Karstadt Group and one of three flagship stores in Germany (Berlin, Hamburg and
Munich)
3. Karstadt Lebensmittel (department store with fine food section)

Headquartered in Cologne, Karstadt Lebensmittel (formerly “Perfetto”) was founded in 2005 as a joint
venture between REWE and Karstadt. There are 44 Karstadt Lebensmittel markets in 33 cities in Germany,
offering up to 25,000 different products ranging from basic foods to gourmet. Great emphasis is placed on
expert service in each department.
4. Lidl (hard discounter)

Lidl is the No. 2 discounter in Germany and belongs to the Schwarz Group. They operate about 3,300 stores
on the domestic market and account for sales worth some € 18,000 million (food: 82%). They have gronw
over the last years through new stores and aggressive pricing strategy on A-Brands, and the introduction of
a deluxe private label range. Their assortment is larger than that of Aldi (No. 1 hard discounter) with 1,900
articles (mix of brands and private labels)

Netto is a soft discounter with about 4,145 outlets in Germany and annual sales of about €12,933 million
(food: 95%)
VEGANZ – One of its kind…
Veganz GmbH is the first and one of its kind vegan supermarket chain in Europe. The company operates as
a premium vegan wholesaler, which manages its own chain of grocery stores that exclusively sell vegan
products. It is unique in Europe. Based in Germany, the company opened its first store in Berlin Prenzlauer
Berg in the summer of 2011, with 250 square metres of space.
Nine others followed in various cities in and outside Germany. Additional branch expansion within and
beyond the borders of Europe is already planned. By 2014 had stores in Berlin Friedrichshain, Frankfurt,
Hamburg, Munich, Essen, Cologne, and also Prague in the Czech Republic and Vienna in Austria. This year, it
plans to open its first vegan shopping center in Portland, Oregon, including a shoe and clothing store and
restaurant.
