third year Biology and Psychology student from Toronto, Ontario
Gray Zaidlin: third year Biology and Psychology student from Toronto, Ontario Jenae Grayer: third year Sociology student from Windsor, Ontario Word on the Street It’s no secret that when it comes to balancing the family, a job, school, and extra-curricular activities, having the time to do anything can be problematic. As Bishops students we’ve come to enjoy the convenience of our tasteful local based businesses where food is made quickly, and resources made available. Coming from a big city convenience was set at a 30-minute bus ride away, I can’t help but appreciate the town I’ve come to live in where you have everything at your fingertips. In this column, we will be discussing changes to the community that you may have missed. As for food, a wonderful new local restaurant has opened up this past fall! Rima Lebanese Bakery has opened up at 135 Queen St., where it serves artisanal baked goods and Lebanese style cuisine. If you have never tasted a shawarma before, Rima is hands down the place to go in Lennoxville! What student wouldn’t enjoy food that comes at a convenience, and locals can enjoy the same too. • • • One change you may have missed is that Conley St. is now called Conolly St. On the corner of Connolly and Little Forks, a new Student’s Village sign has been posted by the city of Sherbrooke. The city has also placed rocks and planted flowers at the corner to make a beautiful little area. As well, a new sidewalk has been built just outside of Clarks & Fils. It is a great opportunity for locals to walk around and enjoy the year round festivities the town has to offer, especially now that the weather is warming up! There is also a new apartment building in construction on Connolly which will provide even more housing for Bishop’s students. The renovations on 137 Rue Queen have been completed, and look lovely. The local Clinique Familiale has revamped their new sign at 223 Rue College in the heart of Lennoxville, expanding on its already thriving location. As the town expands, this is a great opportunity for us students and locals to embrace the beauty of Lennoxville and what its community has to offers. Since the new Dollarama has opened, business is thriving, between a $2.99 Pepsi or a dollar for a chocolate bar, the cheap life is awesome. What student would dare to pass up the option of getting their daily sugar fix at the price of a dollar? We know we sure couldn’t and neither should you. As well, a newly renovated insurance office has opened up on 898 Rue College situated behind the Subway restaurant, to serve the public needs. As out of towners we know better than anybody from our travels how hard it is to find a nice comfy bed, good room service, and readily available rooms to get a good night’s sleep. Whenever you feel the need to take the weekend off, the Motel Le Refuge is a great place. It is open to the locals and visitors, and is located at 43 Rue College. Between the new look, new attitude in catering to the public need, and convenience of a short walk from town, even we want to visit for the weekend, too! With comfort and affordability at your fingertips, the opportunities for a great experience are priceless. We can say from experience we are enjoying ALL that Lennoxville has to offer, especially the food. So come and enjoy what our local community has to offer and embrace the wonderful community Lennoxville continues to provide us. THE JOHN H. PRICE SPORTS AND RECREATION CENTRE RECEIVES SUBSTANTIAL GRANT FROM HYDRO-QUÉBEC • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Sherbrooke, February 18, 2016 – Bishop’s University’s John H. Price Sports and Recreation Centre received a $335,919.98 grant from Hydro-Québec under the company’s Energy Efficiency Programs. This grant was awarded for energy efficiency measures implemented by Consortium exp/Cima’s team of professionals, in collaboration with the designers of the campus energy loop. Here are some of the project’s highlights: Heat recovery from refrigeration systems for the entire sports centre and for the regeneration of the campus energy loop; Dimmable LED lighting for the centre’s gymnasiums and arena; Creation of a microclimate for the arena stands through controlled ventilation intended to preserve ice quality; Integration of the arena’s heating and ventilation control system into the campus central control system; Low voltage lighting control system; Implementation of a storm water detention system, and Connection to the campus geothermal network. “I want to salute the efforts of the entire Consortium exp/Cima team, which worked closely with our Buildings and Grounds team,” said Isabelle Goyette, Assistant Vice-Principal, Finance and Operations. “This is a large-scale project not only for our university, but also for the region. We are very proud of it.” “We are pleased to see that our Energy Efficiency Programs helped build a modern arena, using a wide range of innovative measures,” summed up Anita Travieso, Hydro-Québec’s Manager – Business Programs and Advisory Services – Energy Use. “The close collaboration between our team and Bishop’s University’s team allowed the implementation of innovative solutions designed to solve the project’s energy efficiency challenges, including a ventilation system for the stands, which, while being discrete and efficient, ensures spectator comfort and helps reduce heating costs,” stated Daniel Nappert, P. Eng., mechanical-electrical director at exp’s Sherbrooke office. In 2014, Bishop’s University unveiled its geothermal heating system and astounding results: a 66% reduction in its greenhouse gas emissions as well as a saving of one million litres of drinkable water. In 2015, the opening of the sports centre resulted in an additional annual saving of 6 million litres. Bishop’s University remains committed to becoming carbon neutral. L’Université Bishop’s continue de maintenir son engagement à devenir carbone neutre Major Award Winners from our Athletic Banquet that was held on April 4th • • Major Award Winners (from L to R): Kelly Bradbury (Female Academic Student-Athlete of the Year), Abdul Kamane (Male Freshman of the Year), Jean Gayrard (Male Academic Student-Athlete of the Year), Rob Engelken (Ray Almond Award), Erika Scott (Female Freshman of the Year), Lee Hudson (Male Athlete of the Year) & Ashley Milhomme (Female Athlete of the Year). PROFESSIONAL PROGRAMMING AT CENTENNIAL THEATRE WILL BE DISCONTINUED AS OF 2016-17 SEASON • • • • • • • Sherbrooke, April 18, 2015 – Bishop’s University regrets to announce that it must discontinue the professional programming in Centennial Theatre as of 2016-17. This decision, made by Bishop’s University’s Executive Committee, results from the University’s serious financial situation and its efforts to balance its budget. Unfortunately, the University is forced to discontinue the professional programming as of 2016-17 season because the University is not able to secure $150,000 of external funding to support this programming. The Board of Governors supports this decision. Dr. Miles Turnbull, Vice-Principal Academic, says: ‘‘The University had talks with external partners earlier this year, but none were in a position to offer additional funding to ensure that the professional programming could continue. Nevertheless we appreciate the special funding which was provided last year by our external partners la Ville de Sherbrooke, le Ministère de la Culture et des Communications and le Conseil des arts et lettres du Québec - to allow us time to try to find a solution for a viable future.’’ “It is with great regret that we have taken this decision,” said Dr. Turnbull.“Centennial Theatre has been an important cultural venue in Sherbrooke. It has consistently presented outstanding dancers, musicians and singers. We know that this will be a significant loss for our region, but the University cannot afford to continue to subsidize this programming.” The staff of Centennial Theatre has been informed of this decision and at least for the short term, permanent employees will retain their jobs. Centennial Theatre will continue to present student performances and will remain open for rental as in the past. In fact, the University anticipates that rental income will increase because of greater availability of the space for groups such as community organizations and schools. ‘‘We wish to express our great respect and appreciation for the excellent work and tireless efforts of Luce Couture, Artistic Director of Centennial Theatre, and her whole team,’’ says Dr. Turnbull. ‘‘Luce is an outstanding professional who has dedicated more than 30 years of her professional life to Bishop’s, Centennial Theatre and the arts in Quebec, across Canada and around the world.’’ » Not to be missed!
