Taoyuan - Taiwan This project is around bamboo production as a mean of social and economical development of an aboriginal community in the region of Taoyuan. This project will promote the development, not only of the community but also the creation of an alternative bamboo production. In Taiwan, bamboo craft is held by few craft-artists and it is not really passed on and a competitive craft industry does not exist. By creating a sustainable structure that has the basic know-how of working with bamboo, we could compel the demands of local and international designers. Following the vision that HiH has pursued towards the cooperation between Taiwan and France, these residences will be under the theme of Taipei World Design Capital in 2016; it is the ideal ground to display creative solutions of design, craftsmanship and industry towards the improvement of Taipei Citizens. We propose the use of process of Human-Centered Design* as a guide-line of achieving 3 projects, they all should start with a specific Design Challenge that goes through three main phases: Hear, Create, and Deliver. The process will move from concrete observations about Taiwanese citizens, to abstract thinking as we uncover insights and themes, then back to the concrete with tangible solutions. The partners institutions for these residence will be: -Les Atelier de Paris -NTCRI -MOCA 2016 2015 REVELATIONS International biennale of fine crafts and design Taipei World Design Capital (WDC), Taipei - Taiwan Organized by Atelier d’Art de France, the fair reflects the contemporary French and International scene where fine crafts and design is concerned, in a exceptional setting at LE GRAND PALAIS in Paris on September 2015. Nantou - Taiwan, Pantin - France The purpose is to communicate through an exhibition the result of 5 years of cross cultural exchange. The exhibition will have a strong interactive and pedagogical aspect and it will be focused, through the objects, on the experience lived by the collaboration between artisans and designers of these two distinctive countries. The aim of this cross-residency project is to share knowledge, to collaborate and to experiment with the local materials and know-how as well the local industry. This project is still in discussion and it will run by the second half of 2017. 2017 Exhibition at Les Atelier de Paris Paris - France Hand in Hand and Les Atelier de Paris will show case the result of the residency done during December and January 2016. Date to be anounced. 15 Taoyuan aboriginal community development project. Taoyuan - Taiwan This project was born after the encounter with an aboriginal community that produces bamboo in Taoyuan in the north-west of Taiwan. The need of a socio-economical development and the lack of employment have made this community to suffer from an increasing migration towards the big cities, leaving a desolated and unproductive land. In Taiwan, bamboo craft is held by few craft-artists, this unique knowledge is having a hard time to be passed on to next generations; therefore there is not a competitive craft industry, forcing designers to produce mostly in the neighbor countries. By creating a sustainable structure that has the basic know-how of working with bamboo, we would be able to compel the demands of local and international designers while keeping competitive faire prices. On the other hand, for quite few years we have longing to find a structure, factory capable to produce innovative designs with competitive prices. We are capable to create a sustainable brand to market these products in Europe to assure a production. 16 Taoyuan community it is a perfect ground to create a new economical model, this project will promote the development, not only of the community but also of a sustainable bamboo industry. The success of good development projects often hinge on the trust built in the communities. This trust, which is developed over time, produces dynamic and fruitful results. We also believe that the moral test of a society is how it treats its most vulnerable members. Our development approach Hand in Hand would like to promote an integrated approach to community development through a long-term development program in Taoyuan aboriginal community. Integrated Community Development is not limited to economic growth but it preten ds to cover a global aspect of life — economic, social and cultural. Our partnerships Long-term partnerships with local and international organizations are at the core of our project. We will support and accompany partners through the development process, providing technical support, advice on management and planning, mentoring and guidance. The National Taiwan Craft and Development Institute (NTCRI) and the communal JHIH SHAN high School are key members for the success of this project; both institutions will be in charge on forming the future bamboo craft artist. Hand in Hand Residencies Nantou - Taiwan Since 2011 HiH, through its residences, has promoted creative synergy between artisans and designers from Taiwan and France. Thanks to the collaboration of our partner institutions, in France and in Taiwan, we have been able to showcase different objects fruit of this cultural and know-how exchange. Few of the objects are in production and others waiting to find the investment and/or the structure capable to manufacture them. 18 Designers and artisans: France - Taiwan FRANCE: Residence 2014: Emmanuel Lacoste, Marie Prouteau, Pauline Clemente, Michelle Faider, Evence Verdier, Julie Meffre. Focused, from the very beginning, on the island’s craftsmanship and materials, our activity became an agreeable routine. Three weeks at that rate, few fieldtrips, a weekend off in Taipei and the full attention of NTCRI team, allowed us to create projects with a trademark and richness of a true cultural exchange«. This was for me an unique occasion to explore the French technique of marquetry and to combine with the expertise of Ming WU Chang, a specialist of bamboo craftsmanship. «The crossroads of these two cultures and the very different technical and aesthetic vocabularies produced a collection scenery, graphics, sensual and poetic objects. I called it «natural jewels». «—Laurence Salmon Programmation complète sur www.ddays.net 20 21 23 Hand in Hand has been possible thanks to: Fondation Coubertin hand in hand [email protected] | www.hih.eu
