2012 is a year in which many changes will affect the IGN.
• IGN is changing its name and logo!
The "Inventaire forestier national" is joining the "Institut
géographique national" to form the "Institut national de
l’information géographique et forestière". The new institute
will be keeping the abbreviation IGN and a new logo will soon
be appearing on your favourite maps...
• IGN has a new headquarters!
The new building accommodating the Pôle Géosciences,
which includes IGN's registered office as well as that of
Météo-France and the Paris branch of the Ser vice
Hydrographique et Océanographique de la Marine (SHOM)
was opened at the end of 2011 on IGN's historic site at 73
Avenue de Paris in Saint-Mandé.
• IGN invites you to visit its new Paris shop!
IGN has opened a new shop, Le Monde des Cartes, in the
heart of the capital. Located at 50 Rue de la Verrerie in the 4th
district, the shop organises a number of events throughout
the year.
• IGN offers new map features in an "all in one" concept!
In 2012, several new collections will be published that are
even more adapted to the trends of modern life. The TOP 75
map can be used to explore a whole region and discover the
prettiest footpaths thanks to extracts from TOP 25 maps that
have been added. The "Une ville et ses environs" (The city and
its surrounding area) map can be used to combine the needs
of people living in cities and wanting to get out and about by
offering a 1:80,000 map giving an overall view, a city-centre
extract and a 1:25,000 extract for open-air activities.

and 18th centuries using the original copper
plates.
The World
Cassini's map
The oldest map of France dates from the
18th century. Prepared by the Cassini family
over one hundred years, it is composed of 180,
1:86,400 scale maps and offers an original
vision of France.

Survey maps were drawn up with
impressive attention to detail. For a long time
they were the most detailed maps available.
Drawn between 1818 and 1881, there are 267
of them covering the whole of France at a scale
of 1:80,000.

Aerial photos
If you want to see what your town, village or district
looks like from the air or see how they have developed
over time, aerial photographs are just what you need.
Photography aircraft from the Institut national de
l’information géographiqueet forestière (IGN) regularly
propose new photographs of the whole of the country.
Most of IGN's aerial photographs are available in
colour. From the 1940s up to the present day, they offer
a clear
and exhaustive view of the countryside from any point
in the country.
Géoportail
The originality of the Géoportail
Launched in 2006 and now visited by over
a million internet surfers each month, the
site www.geoportail.fr lets you display IGN'S
digital data (aerial photos, maps at all scales,
a representation of buildings and land-registry
boundaries, hydrography, altitude, networks,
administrative boundaries, place names... )
in 2D and 3D covering the whole of France and
the overseas territories.
National monuments
A collaborative portal enriched
bycontributions from partners
Géoportail's originality is the wealth of
information to which it gives access. Apart
from IGN'S repositories, this collaborative site
hosts numerous layers of information of public
interest coming from other data providers. Over
30 partner layers are currently available: natural
spaces, protected sites, land occupation and
zoning, geology, a description of the coastline,
tide forecasts, old seaside pictures and historical
videos, realistic 3D reconstructions of city
centres, sensitive or free urban areas, areas at
risk, natural or cultural
heritage, etc.

dimension
In addition to this display service, Géoportail
also constitutes a means for the dissemination
of geographical data complying with the
requirements of the European INSPIRE
directive, which aims to permit general
access to geographical and environmental
information.

sizes or in electronic format for downloading.

Type in the name of the commune that interests you.
The selected zone is displayed on a general mapmaking
background that allows you to define the size of the area
that will be covered by your map.
Choose the scale of your map
• "Randonnée et découverte" (Hiking and discovery) series from
1:25,000. Change of scale possible to 1:15,000, 1:20,000, 1:25,000
or 1:30,000.
• "Littoral et découverte" series (Coastlines and discovery)
from 1:25 000.
Change of scale possible to 1:20,000, 1:25,000 or 1:30,000.
• "Tourisme
et découverte" (Tourism and discovery) from
1:100,000. Change of scale possible to 1: 60,000, 1:80,000,
1:100,000 or 1:120,000.
Only the size of the area, legibility and map density vary with these
scales. The basic data remains that of the 1:25,000 maps.

A leading "flagship" building in terms
of eco-construction
The first phase of the project – classed as a "green project"
in order to limit inconvenience to staff and neighbours, as
well as the impact on the environment – was completed in
autumn 2011.
The seven-floor building has been home to IGN and
Météo-France's 620 staff.
The building, of bioclimatic design, runs along Avenue de
Paris for 110 metres, thus increasing the visibility of both
establishments working in the building (IGN and MétéoFrance).
The internal space opens onto the outside mainly by means
of small balconies planted with climbing vegetation.
The 14,200 m2 building was designed by the architect
Laura Carducci based on very strict environmental criteria:
• Optimised natural ventilation and lighting
• Thermal insulation and inertia of the building
• Reinforced solar protection
• Low energy consumption

Contour lines
Choosing a map is choosing a scale.
Each scale has its corresponding use and
purpose.
read and understand the relief on maps.
For travel by car,
national maps at 1:1000,000 or regional maps at 1:250,000, as well
as 1:100,000 maps are the most
suitable and give an overall view
of the projected route.
Regional map
1 cm = 2.5 km
A contour is an imaginary line that links all the points
located at the same height above sea-level.
For travel by bike,
1:100,000 maps are ideal because
they provide information both
about major roads
and secondary roads, as well as
tourist information.
TOP 100 maps
1 cm = 1 km
For exploring a region on foot,
1:25,000 are the best if you want
enough information to hike safely
(contour lines, buildings, footpaths and tracks, vegetation, refuges, etc.).
The closer they are
together, the steeper the
gradient.
The further apart they
are, the gentler the
gradient.
• On IGN maps, relief is represented by orange
contour lines.
• Height above sea-level is generally shown on
the thicker, so-called master contour lines.
TOP 25 maps
1 cm = 250 m
• Contour lines are separated by a difference
in height which we call "equidistance".
Contour lines appear in TOP 25, TOP 75,
Blue Series and TOP 100 maps.
