In 2014, IGN's contribution to the French
commemorations for the First World War is
the publication of the "Great War 1914–1918"
map, in partnership with Mission du Centenaire
14–18. For the Second World War, a new version of
"Normandy/D-Day/6 June 1944" is also planned, to
commemorate 70 years since the landings.
In addition to these maps on historical themes,
the IGN catalogue is bursting with maps dedicated
to outdoor activities. Following the expansion
of the TOP 75 series, which combines a general
1:75,000 map with five extracts from 1:25,000
hiking maps, IGN has developed a brand new
collection of TOP 25R maps. Printed on laminated,
waterproof and tear-proof paper, the TOP 25R is
the ideal map for enjoying outdoor activities in all
weather conditions.
As you flick through our 2014 catalogue, we
hope you will find products to help you on your
journeys in France and worldwide this year, the
tricentenary of the birth of César-François Cassini de
Thury, better known as Cassini III, the father of the
eponymous map, and founder of French topographic
mapmaking, of which IGN is the worthy heir.

can also be viewed in 3D. 3D viewing mode includes a variety
of functions, such as the option to orient the map, rotate
around a specific point and create an elevation profile.

Géoportail provides easy access to maps, aerial photographs and
cadastral maps of France. In addition to IGN's own repositories,
it includes a whole range of data produced by our partner
organisations, covering natural spaces, protected sites, land use
zones, tide forecasts, sensitive urban zones and urban tax-free
zones, at-risk zones, natural and cultural heritage, and more.
Around 100 different types of data
are currently available.
Turn back the clock
with the "Turn back the clock" function, you can download and
view online old maps and photos from photographic missions in
France dating as far back as 1919.
Eighteenth-century Cassini maps and survey maps from the 19th
century are excellent historical tools for understanding modern
geographic issues. Over 1.5 million photos from photographic
missions also provide extensive evidence of the changes and
development experienced by the land over the years.
you are welcome to reuse any maps and photos you download
for public or private purposes, free of charge.

Three buildings to the north of the site will be brought together
to create social housing, student accommodation and a multipurpose room, with a business park to the south. This mixed-use
project is redefining the eastern part of the district, harmoniously
combining scientific activities and housing without sacrificing the
environment. A partnership between central government and the
commune of Saint-Mandé is designed to ensure consistency across
the project as a whole.
IGN, Météo-France and the SHOM draw on synergies between
geoscience specialists in geography, geodesy, localised databases,
climatology, meteorology, hydrography, oceanography, and
more, to enhance their identity and legitimacy, but also to create
a collective sense of momentum, to affirm their sense of duty to
the public and to reassert their commitment to expanding their
influence on a national, European and international scale.

MAPPING
CONCEPTS
THE CONCEPT OF SCALE
CONTOUR LINES
Choosing a map
means choosing a scale.
reading and understanding
the relief on maps
Each scale has its corresponding use
and purpose.
• For travel by car,
national maps at 1:1,000,000
or regional maps at 1:250,000,
as well as 1:100,000 maps are the
most suitable and give an overall
view of the projected route.
Regional maps
1 cm = 2.5 km
A contour is an imaginary line that links all the points located
at the same height above sea-level.
• On IGN maps, relief is represented by orange contour lines.
• For travel by bicycle,
1:100,000 maps are ideal
because they provide information
about both major and secondary
roads, as well as tourist information.
TOP 100 maps
1 cm = 1 km
• For exploring a region on foot,
1:25,000 maps are best if you want
enough information to hike safely
(contour lines, buildings, footpaths
and tracks, vegetation, refuges, etc.).
The closer together
they are, the steeper
the gradient.
The further apart
they are, the gentler
the gradient.
• Height above sea-level is generally shown on the thicker,
so-called master contour lines.
TOP 25 maps
1 cm = 250 m
• Contour lines are separated by a difference in height that
we call "equidistance".
Contour lines appear in TOP 25, TOP 25R, Série Bleue and TOP 100 maps.
