In Clinic Leader WHAT’S YOUR TYPE? VOLUNTEER ABO TYPER Summary of Volunteer Assignment: Qualified volunteers are invited to supporting building our blood donor base by participating in “What’s Your Type?” school and community blood typing events as a Volunteer ABO Typer. Personal Rewards and Benefits: • This is an excellent opportunity to use your Health Sciences professional skills in a voluntary way and have the satisfaction of knowing your efforts are attached to saving or improving the quality of life of those requiring blood and blood products. • Your time is valuable, we will use it wisely and tangibly demonstrate the difference you are making. • Your donor clinic staff will report back to you on the number of participants typed at events you are supporting and the number that actually make a blood donation. Acceptance and Retention Criteria: • All applicants will complete the volunteer registration process • Ideal candidates will be enrolled in, employed as, a graduate of, or retired nurses, practical nurses, phlebotomists, medical laboratory assistants, technicians, clinicians or technologists (other Health Sciences students and practitioners may also be eligible) • Successful completion of the Volunteer ABO Typer assignment screening, orientation and training • Provision of proof of professional training or certification • Third party insurance is considered an asset for individuals enrolled in an academic Health Sciences program • Successful completion of “What’s Your Type?” ABO Typer training and training confirmation documents • Proof of current First Aid and CPR certification • Performing the volunteer role as outlined and demonstrated Time Commitment: • Will be flexible to suit both the volunteer and the organization’s need Specific Tasks of the Volunteer ABO Typer Assignment: • Perform blood typing activities in accordance with policies and procedures • Regularly review written volunteer duties and region specific procedures • Set up typing stations per Canadian Blood Services standards • Ensure identity of participant matches “What’s Your Type?” registration form information • Provide ongoing, meaningful conversation to put the participant at ease • Explain the procedure and method used to determine ABO grouping • Prepare blood grouping trays • Obtain capillary sample • Determine ABO blood group and Rh factor • Monitor the participant and advise supervisor of any participant adverse reactions • May be required to perform First Aid or CPR • Explain ABO system, Rh factor and the need for blood • Ensure proper disposal of bio-hazardous waste 1 888 2 DONATE WHAT’S YOUR TYPE? VOLUNTEER ABO TYPER, continued Other Tasks Associated with this Volunteer Assignment: • May be asked to help with set-up and take down of promotional equipment • Greet and welcome participants so they feel welcome, comfortable and appreciated • Explain the “What’s Your Type?” process and provide potential donors with information • Provide courteous and responsive service • Prepare and maintain required documentation • Alert staff supervisor to any participant reactions requiring attention Skills, Abilities, Traits: • Friendly, outgoing with good communication skills • Excellent customer service with good listening skills • Able to work effectively with a team and good interpersonal skills • Sensitive and respectful of the dignity of all people • Able to observe and react appropriately to participant reactions requiring attention • Professional in manner and appearance • Reliable and punctual Success Measures: A Volunteer’s success in this role will be based on how they: • Support Canadian Blood Services corporate and volunteer program policies • Maintain current and appropriate knowledge necessary to perform the role • Respect and maintain the privacy and confidentiality of all personal information • Refer all donors with medical questions to staff • Perform only those tasks assigned, observe all safety rules and understand and apply positionrelated knowledge and skills • Perform tasks within their ability and physical capability • Fulfill training requirements and volunteer scheduling commitment • Represent the organization and promote CBS’ programs and services in a positive manner • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with staff and other volunteers Orientation/Training: • Canadian Blood Services corporate volunteer orientation and procedural training • National standardized “What’s Your Type?” ABO Typer training and regional procedural training Reports To: • Specific to the ABO Typer Volunteer Service Assignment – Event Staff Supervisor • Specific to the Volunteering experience – regional Volunteer Resources contact Physical Effort and Assignment Environment: • Locations will vary and may be outdoors • Hearing and speaking to exchange information • Seeing to perform assigned duties • Sitting or standing for extended periods of time • Dexterity of hands and fingers to perform tasks • May require handling of average-weight objects • Bending or reaching 1 888 2 DONATE
