GEAPS 2011 Leadership Conference, July 12-14 Leadership Doesn’t Need to be Hard! (And No, We’re Not Kidding) Let Cynthia D’Amour, Author of The Lazy Leader’s Guide to Outrageous Results, Show You How to Effectively Lead! Leadership is… Well, Frustrating! We all know the feeling — You try to push forward a new initiative or create a new group, but no one else is on board, or maybe they’re on board, but want to put forth a less than minimal effort. Whatever the scenario, leadership often feels empty and nothing short of frustrating. You want to give up, but don’t! Although leadership has its challenges, there are strategic, tried and true tactics that you can implement to engage others in leadership. Why You Should Care: Individual Success Now that you realize how easy leadership can be if you understand the strategies, you’re probably asking yourself, so why should I care? As a GEAPS member, you’ve already invested in your future by taking the initiative to join. But what you get out of your membership is completely up to you and leadership is no different. GEAPS’ volunteer leadership pushes forth new initiatives that directly affect each member, whether it is Exchange programming, distance education, or chapter guidelines. So if you really want to drive the success of your future, involvement in GEAPS leadership is the way to do it. Think about it: What better way to promote your own success than launching new initiatives for relevant continuing education and professional development that you yourself find valuable? All GEAPS members who Why GEAPS Cares: Organizational Success There are countless reasons as to how volunteer leadership benefits you, but now you’re asking, what’s in it for GEAPS? Step up. Pass the torch. Carry the banner. All these leadership phrases describe a need for continuous, yet fresh leadership progression and GEAPS is no exception. With the need for leadership on both the chapter and International levels, there is a reoccurring cycle to engage and develop well-qualified future leaders. As previously mentioned, GEAPS needs its volunteer leadership to help members grow professionally by proposing solutions to industry-wide issues. Without our members, we could propose relevant topics based on current events, but only with the help of volunteer leadership can we develop programs and services that address every facet of an issue. Think about it: Volunteer leaders who want to strengthen their careers and better serve their employers are what make GEAPS successful. want to pursue a successful future are welcome (and encouraged) to attend! Why Your Employer Should Care: Company Success Okay, the benefits keep coming on all fronts, but now you’re thinking, what’s in it for my employer? Progressive leadership training in a separate, but work-related setting? Opportunities for continual growth and management experience? While at an extremely minimal cost? Participating in GEAPS’ volunteer leadership is all these and more! As highlighted in a Wall Street Journal article, “Nonprofit Training for Profitable Careers,” studies show that employees who participate in volunteer leadership gain management experience that most corporations couldn’t provide over an extensive period of time, if at all. Volunteer leadership is especially important to younger, perhaps newer employees who need opportunities to hone their leadership and management skills, so that as they advance in their careers, they’ll have a head start on the types of skills needed for higher positions. And with that accelerated preparation, they are given opportunities to sharpen the very skills that make them valuable to their employer at a faster speed than they could achieve within the company itself. Think about it: Your volunteer leadership will promote your individual success and the success of GEAPS, while making you a more valuable employee and promoting the success of your employer company. *Please note that there is no fee to attend. (Just in case you’re missing the common theme, volunteer leadership is a WIN on all levels! It is a potential key to success…) Think Strategic Plans and Envisioned Futures Sound Boring? Think Again! This conference will keep attendees engaged and ready to develop leadership strategies without getting overwhelmed. (Don’t worry—Cynthia will keep you on the edge of your seat!) These sessions will not only benefit GEAPS and GEAPS members—industry professionals, but member employers as well. GEAPS’ International Board developed the 2011 July Leadership Conference to focus on understanding how GEAPS can more efficiently and effectively advance, implement and evolve its future. This may sound simple, but a significant amount of thought and preparation goes into leadership success planning, development and engagement, and we need YOU to be a part of it! 4 – GEAPS In-Grain | April 2011 www.geaps.com 2 011 G E A P S L E A D E R S H I P CO N FE R E N C E M I N N E A P O L I S , M I N N E S OTA J U LY 12-14 CO N FE R E N C E S C H E D U L E The Big Picture July 12 (Afternoon) In this first session, you’ll get a birds-eye view of GEAPS’ next steps and how it will affect professionals in the industry. Chapter Corner Colin McClure, PMI LLC, Greater Nebraska, Chapter Resource Committee Member Do you purchase something on a regular basis, but not take advantage of what you are buying? Not likely. When you joined GEAPS, you or your employer paid membership dues. So what are you doing with that membership? I asked another seasoned GEAPS member why he belongs to GEAPS. His answer was “for professional development.” I am sure that when he first joined, like myself, that was not his reasoning. It is my current answer, but only after years of experience. Today, professional development is the reason I am still in GEAPS after 25+ years. Colin McClure GEAPS has given me the opportunity to interact with people in the industry and has provided me with networking opportunities that I could not have had anywhere else. That said, those opportunities did not happen overnight. I encourage you to attend chapter meetings whenever you can and invite nonmembers to attend with you—maybe your boss or coworkers. (Chapter tours and special topic meetings are great opportu- nities to do this.) Casual outings expose new people to what GEAPS has to offer in a safe, nonthreatening environment. I also encourage you to take advantage of educational programs and webinars. These are great opportunities to learn something new, share ideas and meet new people. GEAPS is an organization that relies on volunteers, and since there has been an expense involved in your membership, I encourage you to get involved on some level. On the local level, inform your chapter leaders that you are interested in helping out wherever you can. We are not all great speakers, planners, or leaders, but we all have talents that can help make are local chapters better. Volunteer leaders are busy, so make sure they know you have an interest in becoming involved. GEAPS wants YOU to in leadership! I encourage all members to get involved as much as possible. You will find that your volunteer time has a large return investment in terms of the time and money spent. New Members Welcome these new members who joined GEAPS recently.
