It is about a French student –Xavier- who is looking for a flat and who would like to rent a flat/ to share a flat
It takes place in Spain in Barcelona; he is there as part of the Erasmus programme
ERASMUS?
European Region Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students
Started in 1987/ 33 countries involved now
To participate in this programme you must have completed your first year in university
Students who join the Erasmus Programme study or do an internship for a period of at least 3 months to
an academic year in another European country. The Erasmus Programme guarantees that the period spent
abroad is recognised by their university
students do not pay extra tuition fees to the university that they visit.
In order to reduce expenses and increase mobility, many students also use the European Commissionsupported accommodation network, CasaSwap, Erasmate or Student Mundial which are free websites
where students and young people can rent, sublet, offer and swap accommodation – on a national and
international basis. A derived benefit is that students can share knowledge and exchange tips and hints
with each other before and after going abroad.

Voici donc en correction un exemple d’intro pour ce sujet :
More and more students in England decide to take a year off before or after university. British students’
favourite destinations are Australia and New Zealand. Prince Harry is probably the UK’s most famous
gapper : he volunteered to work in an African orphanage for one year. I wonder what the advantages of
taking a gap year are and if I would really be ready to live abroad for such a long time.
Homework : →Thursday 3rd read the gap year experience I gave you (text )and complete the
grid with the information you’ll find in your text about your experience (complete your “line” )

Recap : oral what do you remember about couch surfing ?
Couchsurfing.com « dot » com : it is a website to connect hosts (people who welcome travelllers at home ) and
guests (travelers) . you register on the site and communicate with people all around the world. It is a social
network for travelers; it enables you to find a place to sleep, a couch = a sofa for free
It is called couch surfing because “couch” means “sofa”: travelers can find a sofa for one night or more. And
“surfing” because it is a website and people surf on the net to find a host.(un hôte)
HOW DOES THE WEBSITE WORK?
1- You register = sign up to offer a couch or to find a couch
2- You email the host and start chatting
3- You meet the host at his place , you can sleep at his place and visit the town
4- The host can vouch you* ( leave a comment on you and say if you are a good couch surfer) and
you can vouch the host (say if your stay was good or not) : you leave comments and references
on the website so it is safe; the website is not for free-loaders = people who only want to save
money (ce n’est pas pour les “profiteurs”)
*To vouch = se porter garant : attester de votre fiabilité
ADVANTAGES FOR THE HOSTS
They can meet people from all over the world
without moving from their homes
They can learn foreign languages without
travelling
They can have the same service in return; if they
want to travel they can travel for free in return
ADVANTAGES FOR THE GUESTS
They can have a free couch
A free kitchen,A free car
The hosts can show them around : it enables
travelers to avoid tourist traps
ADVANTAGES FOR THE HOSTS AND THE GUESTS:
Thanks to couch surfing you learn to trust Ø= have confidence in other people; you
become less prejudiced = less biased = more open-minded
Ex : in the text TAKE THE COUCH Vincent learnt that all Americans are not as the media
depict them : all of them don’t carry guns !!
You are not afraid of foreigners: you understand their culture better
Couch surfing is a good ways of making friends : you can start a life long friendship
This website is a good illustration of SPACE AND EXCHANGES but also of the notion of PROGRESS .Indeed ,
it relies on new technologies: thanks to new technologies the world has never seemed smaller

WE WILL BE DEALING WITH THE NOTION OF PROGRESS
PROGRESS MEANS TO CHANGE FOR THE BETTER
When we think of progress we think of scientific progress in the medical field for example some scientists have
created an artificial heart or we think of progress in society with social improvements such as new laws in favour of
homosexual marriage or women’s rights; we also think of new technologies with new computers or cell phones
which are smaller but more efficient
THE QUESTION RAISED : SHOULD THERE BE LIMITS TO THE PROGRESS OF THE SCIENCE?
OUR TOPIC : genetic engineering / DESIGNER BABIES = babies made to measure
WE WILL START WITH 2 WORKS OF SCIENCE FICTION THEN WITH WHAT ACTUALLY* EXISTS NOWADAYS
THE LINK WITH THE CARTOON
The snake + the flask : symbolize the Hippocratic oath : scientists are supposed to respect ethics
The man with horns : the devil/ scientists have sold their soul to the devil
The bank notes : money they are ready to do anything for money / it is unethical
The door is ajar : symbolizes the fact that they are open to new experiments; it is only the beginning of genetic
engineering
The eyes are closed : symbolizes the fact scientists have closed their eyes on ethics+ people are blind they don’t
see the risks and trust scientists blindly
The cartoonist wants to sensitize us to the dangers of genetic engineering
Scientists are ready to reach their aim by any means to get money; they turn a blind eye on ethics and forget the
Hippocratic oath
The cartoonists denounces the excesses of scientific progress
Homework : pour demain apprendre voc jusqu’à weight voir ci dessous et trouver dans le texte HUMAN

WHAT IS THE POWER OF GUNS AND GUN LOBBIES IN THE USA ?TO WHAT EXTENT CAN PRESIDENT OBAMA
EXERCISE HIS POWER AGAINST GUN LOBBIES ?
PART 1 FACTS AND FIGURES
Doc 1 : a commercial for a gun rack (un support pour ranger son arme près de son lit!!)
If there is a threat = une menace for example a robber = a burglar (cambrioleur) , a rapist (violeur) , a mugger
(agresseur) you can easily take your weapon thanks to the gun rack ; it is on the side of your bed so you just need
to take your gun and shoot !!
The gunrack is not expensive
It is very handy (pratique !!!) but of course very risky for children
In the US people are allowed to carry a gun : it is part of the Constitution of the US (2nd amendment)
There are 320 million inhabitants and it is estimated there are 200 million guns in circulation !!
Correction activité de groupe
AIM to use 3 DOCUMENTS to introduce our topic about the power guns and gun lobbies in the USA.
READ THE DOCUMENTS ANSWER THE QUESTIONS ON A SEPARATE SHEET OF PAPER
a-How many people are killed by guns in the US every day?
32
b-How many mass shootings have there been in the US in the last 30 years?
62
c-What are the 3 types of weapons referred to in the documents above? What are the laws concerning
these 3 types of weapons ? Under which President was an important law in favour of gun control
voted?
-shotguns or rifles : there are almost no laws to restrict the use of shotguns: you don’t need to be
registered in most states + you don’t need a permit
-handguns : the rules are stricter ; in 38 states you need a permit to carry a handgun
-semi automatic weapons : there are very few restrictions
Under Bill Clinton , the Brady law was voted ( James Brady was shot after an attempt to assassinate Reagan,
was severely injured ; since this event he has championed gun control : he started the Brady Campaign to prevent
gun violence);
This law was voted in 1993 to require a background check of anyone who wants to buy a gun (there is a five day
waiting period during which your background is checked to see if you are not a criminal); problem: it applied to
only 60 %of gun sales but it does not apply to guns you buy on the net or in a gun show
d-Is President Obama in favour or against gun control?
He is in favour of gun control he wanted to pass a law to have background checks for all weapons and to
ban assault weapons but the Senate rejected his proposal
