Signing of an Agreement between AFD and IDC
Johannesburg, July, 12th 2016 – Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and Industrial
Development Corporation of South Africa (IDC) have signed during the State visit of President
Zuma in France a second agreement for a credit line aiming at financing small scale green
projects in South Africa
SUNREF, AFD’s green finance label: an innovative partnership with IDC for green finance to
support private actors
On the occasion of the State visit of President Zuma to France, AFD and IDC signed a Credit Facility
Agreement of 60M€. In the presence of President Hollande and President Zuma, both institutions
confirmed the collaboration through this SUNREF initiative (Sustainable Use of Natural Resources
and Energy Finance). The facility provides long-term loans at attractive conditions adapted to
renewable energy and energy efficiency projects which face difficulties in accessing funding. IDC
will be in charge of lending directly to the small and medium scale companies according to criteria
such as the size of the project and the environmental impact of the projects (reduction in carbon
emissions, production of green energy, energy saving). The facility will also contribute to jobs
preservation and creation for these companies that are highly exposed to the increase of
electricity and energy tariffs.
An integrated approach for green growth
Complementary to the credit line, a technical assistance of 3M€ will be available to enable IDC to
strengthen its capacities in clean energy finance. It will also provide expertise for project
developers to define and improve their green energy projects. It is funded by the SECO (Swiss
cooperation) through the SANEDI (South African National Energy Development Institute).

This credit line is a second phase of an initiative started in 2012. During the first phase, 15 projects
were financed for an amount of 55M€ and enabled a production of green energy of 230 000 000
kWh. Overall, the first credit line with IDC contributed to a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
of nearly 190 000 t per year. Through this second phase, AFD and IDC share stronger ambitions,
with the intention to finance a higher number of projects, with more innovative technologies.
Through this new program, AFD and IDC confirm their commitment to support South Africa’s
efforts towards a green transition. The program will support the development of green industries
and promote access to finance for small and medium companies in South Africa.

Signature d’un Accord entre l’AFD et IDC
Johannesburg, 12 juillet 2016 – L’Agence Française de Développement (AFD) et la banque
Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa (IDC) ont signé un second accord de
financement pour une ligne de crédit destinée à financer des projets verts de petite et moyenne
taille en Afrique du Sud, lors de la visite d’Etat du Président Zuma à Paris.
SUNREF, le label finance verte de l’AFD : un partenariat innovant avec IDC pour la finance
verte pour soutenir le secteur privé
L’Agence Française de Développement (AFD) et the Industrial Development Corporation of South
Africa (IDC) ont signé le lundi 11 juillet une Convention de crédit de 60M€ lors de la visite d’Etat du
Président Zuma à Paris. En présence des Présidents Hollande et Zuma, les deux institutions ont
confirmé leur partenariat à travers une ligne de crédit. Ce programme SUNREF (Sustainable Use of
Financial Resources and Energy Finance) fournit des prêts à des conditions attractives et à longue
maturité, adaptés aux projets d’énergie renouvelable et d’efficacité énergétique. IDC prêtera à des
aux entreprises de petite et moyenne taille selon des critères tels que le montant du projet et son
impact environnemental (réduction de CO2, production d’énergie renouvelable, économie
d’énergie). La ligne de crédit contribuera également à la préservation et à la création d’emplois
pour ces entreprises particulièrement exposées aux augmentations des prix de l’électricité et de
l’énergie.
Une approche intégrée en faveur de la croissance verte
En complément de cette ligne de crédit, une assistance technique de 3M€ sera mise en œuvre
pour appuyer IDC ainsi que d’autres institutions financières locales dans du renforcement de
capacité dans le secteur de l’énergie verte. Elle est financée par la SECO (coopération suisse) et
hébergée par le SANEDI (South African National Energy Development Institute).

permis une réduction annuelle des émissions de gaz à effet de serre de 190 000 t.
Pour cette deuxième phase, l’AFD et IDC partagent de plus fortes ambitions, avec le double
objectif de financer un plus grand nombre de projets, plus innovants en matière de technologie. A
travers ce programme, les deux institutions confirment leur engagement en faveur de la transition
énergétique. Le programme soutiendra le développement d’industries vertes et favorisera l’accès
au financement pour les petites et moyennes entreprises sud-africaines.
