American Evangelical Lutheran Church, Gibson City, Illinois “Committed to Love and to Serve” October 2015 Newsletter From the Pastor Jesus does not call us to privilege, but to serve! Carol Zaleski is a religious scholar and writer who received her Ph.D. in Religion from Harvard University. Professor Zaleski has been teaching Philosophy of Religion, World Religions, and Christian Thought at Smith College, a private liberal arts college for women in Northampton, Massachusetts, since 1989. She wrote an article in 2003 about a group of Mennonites who came to Northampton, Massachusetts, during their summer carnival (The Christian Century, Almost Persuaded, August 9, 2003, page 31). Dr. Zaleski writes: The streets were full of teenagers and Harley Davidson motorcycles when I saw two pretty but plain young women walking past the motorcycles in white bonnets, pastel blue dresses and black stockings. They were part of a group of Mennonites who came to the summer carnival to sing and witness in Jesus' name. They walked to the steps of the City Hall and sang, “My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’s blood and righteousness.” This was a surprise to most of the people, to say the least. The women were not pushy or judgmental. After singing, one of the young women walked down the steps and went over to talk with one of the men on a motorcycle. He responded with kindness, respect and true grace, and they had an amazing discussion about what their faith meant to each one of them. Professor Zaleski, who obviously comes from a different viewpoint theologically than the man on the motorcycle says: I thought of debating some points of the Bible with him, but I kept quiet. I could only rejoice that this motorcycle driver has found a way that leads to life . . . that encourages him to talk about Christ from the steps of City Hall, and to spread the Good News of Jesus with works of mercy and peace . . . This story captures the Spirit of Jesus; the Spirit that Jesus would have us respond to people who are different from us. There are people with whom we disagree, and there are people that we dislike. Let us rejoice that Jesus has shown them a way that leads to life . . . and that he has also shown us a way that leads to life. May we rejoice that Jesus has room in his kingdom for all kinds of different people. If not, then what hope is there for any of us? World Missions – Lutheran World Relief--We are heading into the home stretch as October rolls around. Quilts, school kits, and health kits will be picked up the last Saturday of this month, destined for places anywhere in the world where there is a need. Two notable destinations this past year have been victims of the earthquake in Nepal and Syrian refugees. LWR partners with the United Nations Humanitarian Resource Depot, a network of international warehouses that hold humanitarian supplies in various locations so that they can be quickly deployed following an emergency, focusing especially on very remote communities that sometimes are not even accessible by roads. Nearly 200 quilts have been completed this year, many of which are on display in the sanctuary. Thank you to our quilting ladies who meet each month, to those who sew on their own in between, and to those who have contributed fabric, sheets, blankets, and other materials. We are quickly meeting our goal of 70 personal care kits and have completed 128 school kits, and we are grateful to those who have contributed so generously. Many have inquired about what items are still needed. Soap & towels will enable us to send more personal care kits. In addition, if you would like to contribute in some way but don’t have the time or access to shop for these items, we will gladly accept monetary donations, and we will do the shopping for you. If you find a quilt that you want to take home, it can be purchased to help with the cost of shipping the quilts and kits. New Membership Directories are available in Parish Hall. Please make these corrections: Ron & Willy Stevenson no longer have their home phone. Jan Gill has a new e-mail address: [email protected]. Charlotte Holsten’s cell phone number is 309-826-2526. The goal is to bring more traffic into Gibson City. Their profits would go to support a local charity. They would charge $30.00 for the booth rental and then also ask crafters to bring in an item for a raffle worth $15.00 or more. They would require prepayment from the vendors and the vendors will have to sign a contract. They also asked about using the kitchen for lunch. Lunch ideas are Pioletti Spaghetti or sandwich trays. The shows would run either Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with set up from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and take down from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. or Sunday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. with set up from noon to 1:00 p.m. and tear down from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Darcy asked what type of vendors would be asked to join the craft show. Sara stated they would have craft vendors that make their items as well as home base businesses. The dates proposed are October 4, November 21, January 23, February 27, April 23, and May 14 and 15. They would advertise in the newspapers, WGCY, WCIA, Facebook, Sign of Gibson City in front of Subway, and flyers. Tom asked if food was a deal breaker because of the carpeting in Parish Hall. Sara stated it was not a deal breaker. Sara asked about the tables in Parish Hall. Council stated they could be used as long as they were covered. Chairs could also be used. Sara also asked about electricity and wifi. Council stated outlets could be used, but wifi would not reach into Parish Hall. Council stated they would discuss and get back with Lindsay and Sara on approval and what dates work with the church. Discussion made about having craft show at the church by council. Council agreed would need to have contract with Sara and Lindsay. Also council would ask for a suggested donation of $150.00 for use of Parish Hall and then an additional suggested donation of $50.00 for use of kitchen. Suggested donations would help church to cover expenses for electricity and cleaning. Council also voted to approve the dates of November 21 and April 23 for use of Parish Hall for the craft show.
