Green Lightho use is Denmark’s first public carbo n-neutral building. The building has been built in less than a year in a clo se
public/private partnership.
Green Lightho use is an energy-efficient building o f great architectural merit, with a high influx o f daylight. Inspired by the sundial
and the mo vement o f the sun aro und the building, Green Lightho use plays o n the sun as a so urce o f energy and o n its ro le in
science. As sustainable as it is healthy, Green Lightho use relies o n district heating, so lar cells, so lar heating and co o ling,
seaso nal sto rage and inno vative architecture to create a go rgeo us, CO 2-neutral building.
The partners behind the building bo th fro m the public and the private sphere. They are the University o f Co penhagen, VELUX,
VELFAC, the Danish Building and Pro perty Agency (UBST) and the City o f Co penhagen.

than o ne sense. It was built as a green lightho use fo r CO2-neutral buildings up to the UN Climate Co nference in Co penhagen
in 20 0 9 (COP15); it as meant as a lightho use fo r efficient public-private co o peratio n; and last, but no t least, it stands as a
lightho use fo r the Faculty o f Science at the University o f Co penhagen, which will see its student services co nso lidated under
o ne ro o f.
Every element in Green Lightho use was cho sen fo r its energy efficiency and fo r the well-being o f tho se wo rking in and visiting
the building. An o pen, inviting space that is full o f natural light, Green Lightho use certainly stands o ut amo ngst the traditio nal
buildings in the neighbo urho o d.
De script io n archit e ct urale : A ro und, sculptural building, Green Lightho use features high ceilings and an o pen, spacio us
flo o rplan. It is designed in a way that reduces energy co nsumptio n by 70 % utilising renewable energy, natural ventilatio n and
light – and with a highly efficient climate envelo pe. Its circular fo rm ensures the inner atrium is awash in uplifting natural light
fro m the ro o f’s many ro o f windo ws. The central space is also crucial in terms o f ventilatio n as fresh air fro m the façade
windo ws is channelled thro ugh the atrium befo re it leaves thro ugh the ro o m’s ro o f windo ws.
The sun is the building’s main energy so urce, pro viding passive so lar gain, ho t water and electricity. Efficient windo ws
minimise the heat lo ss while maximising passive so lar gain. Green Lightho use’s angled ro o f plays an active ro le in the
building’s energy pro file. It acts as a po wer plant, capturing the sun’s energy using bo th so lar panels and so lar cells.
The façade is made fro m Swissfiber, a 30 % glass, 70 % po lymer co mpo site material that is extremely light and stro ng. In fact,
the entire façade weighs o nly six to nnes. By co mpariso n, a similar so lutio n in tile wo uld have weighed mo re than 175 to nnes
and been co nsiderably thicker.

o utdo o rs visually, and also in terms o f co mfo rt. During winter, the IAQ is stable based o n mechanical ventilatio n and heat
exchange, during summer the users enjo y natural ventilatio n, co mbined with night co o ling.

design, where the facade windo ws and exterio r sunscreening fo llo w the path o f the sun. The users can fo llo w the seaso ns
changing, and adapt the indo o r climate individually. The ho use is flo o ded with daylight o n all flo o rs, and there is a "cathedral
effect" thro ugh the central atrium, where users benefit fro m a 250 0 + lux experience, to benefit their well-being and
pro ductivity.
