This statement created a political earthquake that promises to shake European soil for years to come. What are the implications when a member can opt out so easily from a coalition born to maintain peace across a continent? The reasonable fear for the end of larger international balances is currently counterweighted by the indecisiveness demonstrated by the UK government. What the future holds remains uncertain. How does art inform us? Parcours A remembers Brussels role as the symbolic capital of Europe, and follows a trail of images produced in the post-war period to consider their concerns, projections, fears and fantasies. From the pivotal show at Bozar, which highlights the period between 1945 and 1968, to the institutional version of Europe exhibited at the Parlamentarium, imagery around continental political unity is analyzed and deconstructed as history, art history and failed futures unfold into each other at many stops on the Brussels Gallery Weekend map. This selection of exhibitions focuses on a generation of artists that exchanged their research and vision in a continent with national boundaries and customs, before moving to a generation that grew up in an age of free movement. An impressive list of contemporary art masters appears as we consider the exhibitions around town. Helena Almeida, Giovanni Anselmo, Karel Appel, Marcel Broodthaers, Francesco Clemente, Mimmo Jodice, Marisa Merz, and Rosemarie Trockel are just a few of those whose works will be displayed. Parallel to this, it is interesting to juxtapose works by more recent generations, which deal with the power structures of the past and their influence on the current political scenario. Highlighted for this tour are the post-colonial inquiries of Sven Augustijnen, the will of Capital illustrated by Taryn Simon and Giuseppe Stampone’s research on migration. While enjoying the spirit of Europe that pervades the Brussels Gallery Weekend, don’t forget to end your day at Parc Duden, where you can enjoy in-depth late night conversations, talks and screenings in the “Nature” program of the “Jardin Essentiel” Parck Design’s schedule.
