The word ‘work’ being extremely dubious, it is nonetheless to be taken in an active sense, ‘work of a certain kind is done here,’ and not in the sense of a result: ‘look at the work done.’ Indeed, in the latter interpretation, it would be difficult to talk about this work and to distinguish it from its place. The phrase ‘work in situ,’ in the sense that is closest to what I mean, could be paraphrased as ‘transformation of the host site.’ Transformation of the host site accomplished through various operations, including the use of my ‘visual tool.’ This transformation can be made for the space, against the space, or in osmosis with the space, just as a chameleon changes colour on a green leaf, or becomes grey on a stone wall. Even in this case, there is a transformation of the place, even if what is most transformed is the transforming agent. There are therefore always two transforming agents at work, the tool acting on the location and the location acting on the tool, each more or less influencing the other. The outcome is always (a) the place transformed by the tool and (b) the tool’s meaning accessed through its use in – and by – the place in question. Finally, ‘in situ’ to my mind means that there is a voluntarily accepted link between the space of reception and the ‘work’ that is made, presented and exposed there. This applies without exception to all my work done here and elsewhere since 1965.
